In this sequel to the romantic spy-thriller Two Lies and a Spy, Kari must race against the clock on a mission to save her little brother.

Kari Andrews thought life was going to get easier. She was wrong. Following the events of Two Lies and a Spy, she and her brother, Charlie, are left to cope with the aftermath while also adapting to a new school—in another country. But then Charlie disappears.

With her brother’s life hanging in the balance, Kari, Evan, Rita, Kale, and some new friends from Generation Interpol (G.I.) set off on a race around Europe at the bidding of a voice on a phone. The voice tells them that they need to jailbreak a thief—a flirtatious, hot thief—steal something from a high-security bio lab, and deliver the goods during what’s sure to be a double-cross exchange. Can they succeed before Charlie pays the ultimate price?

From School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—In the sequel to Two Lies and a Spy (S. & S., 2013), Kari and her little brother Charlie are living in Paris, attending GI (Generation Interpol) spy school, and still reeling from the discovery that their parents are double agents for Russia. Kari struggles with learning French, being away from her boyfriend and best friends, and coping with her feelings for Evan, the hottest boy at GI who kissed her. The only bright spot is Charlie, so when he's kidnapped and Kari receives a phone call threatening his life, she will stop at nothing to rescue him. Evan and Matthis, Charlie's friend, assist her as they fulfill the kidnappers' demands, first "rescuing" Gustav, a thief, from prison transport and then stealing jungbrunnen, the fountain of youth. Ultimately, Kari finds herself taken hostage along with her brother, and it will take all of her skills to make it out alive. This is a fast-paced ride, and those who haven't read the first title will be confused by some characters and Kari's throwaway references to her previous life and parents' betrayal. The cover seems designed to appeal to older readers, but other than some violence, the plot falls squarely in middle school territory. Review
"Solid action, high stakes and a likable heroine keep the pages turning." (Kirkus Reviews)

This second installment in a new espionage-action series for girls provides suspenseful entertainment, although Kari Andrews is no Alex Rider. The story begins in Paris, where 16-year-old Kari studies at Generation Interpol, training to become a spy like her parents, who turned traitors and abandoned their family in the previous book. Although Kari has real talent in martial arts, it's difficult to imagine a character less suited to the spy trade. She's uninterested in and unable to learn languages or the technical aspects of her chosen profession. Throughout the book, Kari shows herself to be a walking bundle of rampant emotions. She can't control herself even in the most dangerous situations, and her emotional outbursts threaten the success of her mission over and over. Fortunately, handsome Evan keeps her in line, though with some difficulty, by reminding Kari that her little brother Charlie's life could be lost if she doesn't calm down. Shadowy enemies have kidnapped the 7-year-old genius, threatening to dismember and then kill him if Kari doesn't spring a thief from jail. She teams up with Evan and two other friends in a caper that takes the group across Europe and involves a nifty break-in to a highly secure company headquarters. Solid action, high stakes and a likable heroine keep the pages turning. (Kirkus Reviews August 1, 2014)

About the Author
Kat Carlton is the alias for a private citizen working in the interests of truth, justice, and the American Way. She’d reveal her true identity, but then she’d have to kill too many people…so Kat is content, like most covert operatives, to take names and kick ass from behind the scenes.

Fun, smart caper!
By C. Thomason
I'm ** years old (definitely NOT a teen)and I loved this book. So if you have a young adult reader in your family I guarantee this selection will be a hit. Kari is a bold, funny, in many ways typical teen who just happens to be on a spy mission. She faces danger, abduction, threats and boyfriend trouble. Her brother, the prodigy, is a great character who interacts delightfully with Kari. A rollicking adventure until the end, and even then...
Watch for the next book.

Fun spy novel for teens
By Liviania
I'll make this review short and sweet, much like TWO LIES AND A SPY itself. When Kari gets a Code Black text from her dad, she instantly ditches school, picks up her little brother, and goes to the designated rendezvous. But her parents, both spies for the US government, aren't there.

Kari soon finds out that her parents are suspected of being double agents, traitors. And thus Kari hurries to clear their names, with the help of her best friends, her crush, her crush's bratty but talented twin sister, and the guy who doesn't realize his flirting style really isn't working with Kari. It's a fairly large cast for such a short novel, but they're well defined personalities that work well together.

There's just something so fun about comedic spy hijinks - you get laughs, action, romance, and probing questions about identity. I loved that TWO LIES AND A SPY went somewhere quite unusual for a YA spy novel, a twist that makes me extremely excited about the second book.

My only quibble with the novel is that Kari, who is pretty good at spy craft for an amateur thanks to her parents' training, makes the same mistake twice. Her instincts tell her that something is off, she doesn't listen, and it turns out she should've been paying more attention. It is difficult to explain and stay vague to avoid spoiling anything, but I don't think it would spoil anything . . . the real problem is that Kat Carlton tries to foreshadow the twist in both instances, but does it too heavily. I think it's an issue of inexperience.

But TWO LIES AND A SPY is super fun, and Kari is pretty new to this after all. I think fans of Robin Benway's ALSO KNOWN AS and Ally Carter's Heist Society series will devour this debut novel. On the more manly side, I think it has some appeal to Alex Rider fans too.

Fun and Fast-Paced!
By Nancy J. Cohen
Kari gets a text from her dad while in school and recognizes the emergency code. Her parents are in trouble, and she must retrieve her younger brother, Charlie. Once together, the pair attempts to determine why they're suddenly in danger and why their parents have vanished. They get caught up in spy-jinks and soon are on the run, pursued by a nameless enemy. Stunned when her parents are accused of being spies who have turned against the agency, Kari intends to prove the government wrong. Two Lies and a Spy is a fun, fresh look at teens as spies. The Spy Kids films, Sky High movie, and Alex Rider stories come to mind. A breezy writing style combined with plot twists and turns, humor, teen angst, and fast pacing make this an easy read.

The Long War by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter follows the adventures and travails of heroes Joshua Valiente and Lobsang in an exciting continuation of the extraordinary science fiction journey begun in their New York Times bestseller The Long Earth.

A generation after the events of The Long Earth, humankind has spread across the new worlds opened up by “stepping.” A new “America”—Valhalla—is emerging more than a million steps from Datum—our Earth. Thanks to a bountiful environment, the Valhallan society mirrors the core values and behaviors of colonial America. And Valhalla is growing restless under the controlling long arm of the Datum government.

Soon Joshua, now a married man, is summoned by Lobsang to deal with a building crisis that threatens to plunge the Long Earth into a war unlike any humankind has waged before.

Don't bother
By Mark Folashade
Look, I really really liked the Long Earth because it introduced a new concept that I'd never encountered before when reading science fiction. Sure there have been other stories with parallel worlds but I haven't come across anything that approaches the scale introduced by the first book. So you can imagine my excitement when I learned that a sequel was coming out and I didn't let the 3 star rating deter me. I should have.

There's nothing new in the Long Earth, no exploration of new concepts to captivate the imagination. You catch a glimpse of it when there's a wild tale told about distant earths beyond the "meggers" with no moon, different colored suns, when you're told a story by one of the characters in the book of a pioneer who steps "wrong", maybe another direction other than east or west, and ends up in a place where the stars are inverted or whatever. Hell there's even a tingle of excitement when you see the ray guns for the first time and maybe think the characters will run into another equivalent or beyond tech level civilization. Even the few none ape like sentient like races were interesting but the most disappointing part of the book is that they never go anywhere with these ideas. It's like they spend most of the bloody book moralizing about how awful we're treating the singing apes or how the notion of old america is obsolete.

This book, for me at least, had so much potential and I really wanted to like it but if you treasure the Long Earth and don't want to stain your memory of the series I'd advice you to save your money with this book. I'd give it a 2.5 star rating if I could but I'll make do with a 2.

Ultimately sort of directionless
By Karl S.
If you've read The Long Earth, you might expect this book to carry on the plot thread about the major existential threat that is introduced near the end of that book. You will discover quickly in The Long War that that idea has been all but forgotten.

The Long War expands the cast of The Long Earth, bringing back nearly all the supporting characters and introducing a few new ones. Like its predecessor, The Long War doesn't really do anything with most of them. There are some subplots that have been carried over from TLE, for example the Nelson Azikiwe plot, that persist in not really having anything happen in them. Other, new subplots (like the China mission) suffer from the same malady.

The glacial pace of these subplots, and, by extension, the overarching plot of the series, would be more understandable and excusable if the books were longer, or were developing a more nuanced arrangement of elements. However, with the characters mostly being explicitly variations on the same basic worthy archetypes (socially enlightened loner/pioneer, socially enlightened maverick captain, socially enlightened female loner/pioneer, socially enlightened AI, etc.) there's not much opportunity for any real conflict between them. The "conflict" that does develop is mainly between individual humans and some circumstance of whatever alternate Earth or group thereof those humans find themselves; there's always a feeling of arbitrariness about the way these encounters play out. Later on in the story, it was hard for me to shake the feeling that certain events were the authors' way of writing themselves back out of a corner. There's some foreshadowing of the potential future importance of some of the characters, but given the way the foreshadowing in the first book was subverted here, I wouldn't be surprised if those characters spent Book Three asleep. This would be more forgivable if TLE and TLW weren't all setup.

Another thing I want to touch on quickly is that although I know that Terry Pratchett has a good ear for comic dialogue on his own (I have read none of Stephen Baxter's solo work, so I can't comment on that), as a pair, these authors cannot write convincing character dialogue for this sort of story. Also, the dialogue of the main characters--Joshua, Monica, Helen, and Sally--is not credible as the speech of human beings, much less so of Americans, and of Wisconsinites in no way whatsoever.

The core conceit of the Long Earth series (humans develop the ability to travel through a theoretically-infinite range of parallel Earths with alternate histories on a geologic/cosmic time scale, and therefore with more-or-less widely divergent geographies and ecosystems) is still fun, though, even two books in. If you get past the characters and the plot, there are a lot of nifty thought experiments scattered throughout.

a little let down
By carl
i'll start by saying the only thing I've ever read by Stephen Baxter was "The Long Earth" while I've read just about everything Terry Pratchett's ever written. So it's possible I just prefer a complete Pratchett book to this collaborative style. This had all the elements of a great book - solid premise, sprawling plot, and several vignettes that all intertwine. However, the writing is clumsy. I've heard before that an author should show you how a person feels - not just tell you. Well there is way too much dumbed down explanation of every feeling each character has instead of describing how they show said feelings. The characters are also cartoonish - "hardened cop with heart of gold", "hardened captain with heart of gold", "hardened adventurer with heart of gold", "evil republican with heart of turds". Also, to be fair, the title is misleading. Also some vignettes seem to add little... well nothing actually... to the story.

This feels like a jumbled, quickly written, poorly fleshed out book that is to serve as a bridge to whatever the next chapter in this series is. I see no reason to buy this new and in hardback.

Roman Pilgrimage: The Station Churches, by George Weigel

In recent decades, Americans in Rome have revived an ancient Christian custom: the daily pilgrimage to dozens of Rome’s most striking churches during Lent and Easter Week. Along this historical and spiritual pathway, pilgrims encounter hidden artistic wonders and treasured Christian commentaries, while also confronting the great mysteries of the Christian faith through a program of biblical and early Christian readings. The itinerary of the Roman station church pilgrimage offers Christians an opportunity to reflect on their religion and ponder the quality of their discipleship. In Roman Pilgrimage, best-selling theologian George Weigel, art historian Elizabeth Lev, and photographer Stephen Weigel guide readers along this religious and aesthetic journey with gorgeous photographs and revealing essays on the pilgrimage’s art, architecture, and liturgies.

A reminder of the call for renewal and conversion during each Lenten season, Roman Pilgrimage reflects on the deepest truths of Christianity and the exquisite beauty of the station churches of Rome.

From Booklist
Rome’s station churches date from the early Christian era, with architectural and traditional elaborations added to many in the Renaissance and major repairs made as recently as the past decade. Their visitation by believers during Lent follows a specific order, with aspects of the faith related to each edifice. Weigel, a Vatican analyst for NBC news, presents a readily accessible overview of how these “stational churches” correlate to and support Roman Catholic Lenten practice and affirmations while at the same time providing an attractive meditative tour for any visitor. Art historian Elizabeth Lev uses Weigel’s color photos to discuss architectural details along with the buildings’ history. This is a unique guide book, referencing not only theology but the history of Western art, modern and post modern literature, urban history, and church history. Valuable to believers, scholars, students, armchair travelers, and those planning pilgrimages following Phil Cousineau’s guides. --Francisca Goldsmith

Review
''Roman Pilgrimage is as beautiful as it is profound. Part travelogue, part meditation on Lent and Easter, part art-historical feast, this sumptuously produced book, full of striking photographs and theological wisdom, provides readers with a personal spiritual itinerary through the Eternal City during the holiest time of the year.'' --New Criterion

''On cold, damp, late-winter early mornings, hundreds of priests, seminarians, sisters, and devoted lay people walk the Roman cobblestones to one of the Eternal City's forty most venerable sites, the station church of that Lenten day. It's a microcosm of the pilgrim Church and of life's journey, and Easter is never brighter than after faithfully completing this sixteen-century-old pilgrimage tradition.'' --Timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New York

''The Lenten station church pilgrimage is increasingly popular in Rome, especially among English-speaking Catholics . . . Up to now, though, these sunrise pilgrimages have been known to few outside Rome. No more!'' --Edwin Cardinal O'Brien, grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem

''Visitors to the Eternal City, either in their armchairs or on foot, will learn much about the spiritual journey of Lent and Easter through Rome's station churches, many of them little-known artistic treasures.'' --Bruce Cole, chairman, National Endowment for the Humanities, 2001-2009

A Pilgrimage of Conversion and Joy
By Edward R. Grant
Lent will never be the same for those who engage this book's invitation to join in spirit those fortunate enough to make the "Roman Pilgrimage" in person. George Weigel's reflections on the liturgical readings for each day of Lent (and the Octave of Easter) draw from deep wells of theology, history, and literature, while Eiizabeth Lev's lucid essays on the Station Churches provide their own invitation to consider how zeal for "theHouse of the Lord" is a centuries-old constant in the pilgrim life of the Church. I agree that the fine work of photographer Stephen Weigel is a bit short-changed in the bound volume's conversion of many photos to black and white. However, there are also ample color plates beautifully capturing what is inevitably a fraction of the rich detail in these Churches. As elsewhere noted, the Kindle edition displays all photographs in full color; also the MP3 version includes a supplemental PDF of young Mr. Weigel's work. For those in Apple-land, the Ibooks version would, I am sure, look splendid on a 27-inch screen!

Those who quibble here with the aesthetics may be missing the point of the book: to invite all Catholics, indeed, all Christians and men and women of good will, to set aside Lent, in a manner largely lost in recent decades, as a time for profound reflection on the realities of sin, conversion, redemption, and, ultimately, the joy of a life animated by, and lived in, imitation of Christ. While this is always primarily a matter of the "interior life," the book reminds us that the places and things of this Earth are the essential context in which that journey takes place. This manner of "going out," especially when made in communion with fellow pilgrims, is the key to a Lent well-observed.

A Lenten Retreat
By Dionysius
This is a beautiful book in every respect, and Weigel's exquisite meditations on each day of Lent are an invitation to an ever deeper conversion to Christ.

The Station Churches of Rome are one of the greatest hidden treasures of the Catholic Church, and this book opens the doors to those churches and to the liturgical riches of Lent. All the photos in the Kindle version are high res and in color, so this is one instance in which the e-book is perhaps of greater value than the paper version.

Any Christian seeking a deeper and more mature spiritual life will find a splendid companion on the way in "Roman Pilgrimage."

Disappointing
By Jack
This book is disappointing.

Although the book is ostensibly about the ancient Lenten station churches of Rome, the bulk of the book is devoted to George Weigel's commentary on the liturgical readings for each day of Lent. He has little to say about the station churches themselves.

Each church receives a brief one-page description from the art historian Elizabeth Lev. I suppose this is better than nothing, but these short descriptions contain some surprising errors and omissions. For example, Ms. Lev claims that Santo Stefano Rotondo was originally built in the early fifth century. In reality, it was built several decades later. The description of San Sisto Vecchio omits the legend that the church was built on the spot where Pope St. Sixtus II, while on his way to be executed, met his deacon, St. Lawrence. This story would be of interest to any pilgrim visiting the church.

The book contains a few color photographs of the churches, some of which you are unlikely to find elsewhere. However, I had expected the book to have far more color photos than it does.

It is also irritating that the churches are identified solely by their English names even though the churches are far better known, even in the English-speaking world, by their Italian names. If you go to Rome and ask a local for directions to "St. Peter in Chains", he or she isn't likely going to have a clue what you're talking about.

I cannot help but feel that this book was put together hurriedly and was carelessly edited. You will like this book if you are interested in Mr. Weigel's commentary on the Lenten liturgical readings. However, for information on the station churches themselves, you would do better to read any number of books on Roman art and architecture, as well as general tourist guidebooks and internet sites.

Review
Long before Jerry Seinfeld and Samuel Beckett, there was Ivan Goncharov, a minor government official in czarist Russia, and his classic novel about an ordinary Russian aristocrat mired in his own extraordinary inertia. --Chris Lehman, Bookforum

Oblomov is a truly great work, the likes of which one has not seen for a long, long time. I am in rapture over Oblomov and keep rereading it. --Leo Tolstoy

From the Inside Flap
The sly, subversive side of the nineteenth-century Russian literary character -- the one which represents such a contrast to the titanic exertions of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky -- was most fully realized in Ivan Goncharov's 1859 masterpiece, OBLOMOV. This magnificent farce about a gentleman who spends the better part of his life in bed is a reminder of the extent to which humor, in the hands of a comic genius, can be used to explore the absurdities and injustices of a social order.

A fun and moving story of "the Russian Hamlet"
By A Customer
Oblomov was written just a couple of years before the abolition of serfdom in Russia, a time when the landowners were still clinging to feudal ways of making money but had been exposed to (and for the most part fascinated by) more modern ways of living their upper-class lives. The title character, like many other landowners, has for some time lived in Petersburg, away from his family estate, but unlike many others he finds himself very bored with society life. Instead, he prefers to remain in his bed, entertaining a handful of guests, mulling over but never putting to paper a plan to improve his estate, and, for him most pleasantly of all, daydreaming about his simple and idyllic childhood in the country. To any outside observer, he is pathetic in this state, where he can't even finish writing a letter, so his childhood friend Stolz tries to bring him out of his torpor. Stolz fails in persuading him that going to dinner parties and taking part in high-society backstabbing is any better than lying in bed, but he does manage to rouse him to some kind of action by introducing him to his friend Olga. Olga and Oblomov fall in love, with Olga dreaming of a permanently-changed Oblomov and Oblomov dreaming of a future growing old with Olga on Oblomov's family estate. Meanwhile, circumstances force Oblomov to move into a new apartment, where the landlady takes quite a liking to him but the landlady's brother, along with one of Oblomov's longtime houseguests, conspire to defraud Oblomov. This probably only summarizes about half of the novel, but saying much more would probably give away too much of the ending.
Despite the unattractiveness of Oblomov's preferred lifestyle, Goncharov manages to make Oblomov a very lovable character. The reader is brought into a fair amount of sympathy with Oblomov's nostalgia for his childhood and his innocent hopes for a peacefully happy future, and I for one was unable to blame Oblomov for wanting to stay in bed rather than put up with all the artifices and machinations of high society life. All the love affairs in the novel are mostly well put-together (though in the novel's final part Goncharov was a bit too long-winded about some of the characters' emotions), and although Oblomov receives by far the most attention, both Olga and Oblomov's servant Zahar are well- (and in the latter case quite amusingly-) drawn The main qualm I had about this book prior to reading it was that the prospect of spending 500 pages on a novel about a man who wants to do nothing but lie by himself in bed sounded a bit boring, but that turned out to be unfounded for a couple of reasons. First, Stolz and Olga do manage to get him out of bed and persuade him to take action on some fronts, even if his deeper inclinations still show throughout. Second, the first (150-page) part of the novel, which Oblomov does spend entirely in bed, surprisingly turned out for me to be the novel's most entertaining part.
There were some minor technical problems with the work (in particular I thought some of the changes of scene were quite awkward), but these did not take away at all from my enjoyment of the book. Oblomov is ultimately a tragic figure, and his flaw of inaction is very much tied up with the archaic feudal system in place in Russia at the time. However, this does not prevent those of us living 141 years in the future and many thousands of miles away from sympathizing with him and having a great deal of fun as more and more about this fascinating character is revealed.

READ BEFORE PURCHASING
By Mr. Henry
Be forewarned: this edition is not the full shilling. At a mere 161 pages, it is not even a third of the actual novel. Nowhere does it indicate this to be the case, so if you purchase it without looking at the page count in the product description notes, you might be fooled, since all the customer reviews here are actually for other (complete) editions. I just returned it and ordered the Penguin Classics (Everyman's Library also has a fine but more expensive edition).

Because all reviews for various editions seem to be lumped together on a single page, I'd like to clarify as to exactly which edition I'm warning people away from:

The saint of sloth
By Boris Bangemann
Oblomov, the main character of Ivan Goncharov's novel, is widely regarded as one of the finest literary examples of the backward-looking landed gentry of mid-nineteenth century Russia. His name has even entered the Russian language in the term "oblomovshchina", meaning backwardness, inertia. The unheroic hero Oblomov is also a very fine literary creation of a fully-fledged human being. He is a melancholy idealist, a dreamer whose temperament is such that he never begins to put his dreams into action. His tragedy is that he weighs the possible obstacles to his endeavors for such a long time that, finally, he never even starts to act.
Ivan Goncharov is at his best when he describes the mental processes of Oblomov that lead to his bumbling life. There is no better description of how the mind of a pessimistic person manipulates the perception of reality than in this book.
"The Saint of Sloth" is the title of a review written by the critic V.S. Pritchett for the New York Review of Books. It captures nicely the two main aspects of Oblomov's character. On the one hand, Oblomov is lazy, irresponsible, pessimistic, paralyzed, complacent, slothful; but on the other hand he is idealistic, true to himself, honest, child-like, innocent, saintly. He is ultimately a lovable human being. He does not lack wisdom, he lacks resolve.
As can be expected, Goncharov's book is not an action-packed thriller. On the first 50 or so pages, Oblomov barely manages to get out of his bed. A patient reader who keeps reading, however, is rewarded with a wonderfully realistic love story (including all the ups and downs), and many wise comments by the bachelor Goncharov on life, love, passion, duty and marriage.

Rebecca: 1 (Afrikaans Edition), by Wilna Adriaanse

En op haar T-hemp staan geskryf, I think therefore I am single. . .

Heerlike ontspanning leesstof
By Pieter Conradie
Wilna skryf onderhoudend, moeilik om boek neer te sit! Baie goeie insig in vandag se jong mense in RSA. Regtig goeie beskrywings van karakters se emosionele ervarings. Die storie is effens voorspelbaar, maar dit is nog steeds 'n heerlike leesboek.
