Great YA Dystopian Best Suited For Older Teens (and adults!)

I read Captives, book one in the Safe Lands series, last year and really enjoyed it! I admit, I did forget some things from book one, so I think that is why it took me a while to get in sync with Outcasts' story/characters. But, once I did, I started to really enjoy the book and, from about the halfway mark on, I didn't want to stop reading!

The characters were very good, but it's difficult to name my one favorite. In Captives, Mason was my favorite (and I loved his character in this book, too!), but Omar may be my favorite from Outcasts...just because of how **possible spoiler** he realized his errors and is now struggling to get things right. **end of possible spoiler**

There were a few things in Outcasts that weren't all that believable to me; but, then again, this book is dystopian/futuristic sci-fi, so that didn't lessen my enjoyment of the story. Plus, there were some really cool futuristic gadgets/elements, which I found very neat!

Just a word of caution: like book one, there are some more mature elements to Outcasts, so I think this book is best suited for older teens (and adults!) who enjoy YA dystopian reads. I thought it was a great read and look forward to reading Rebels (book three) when it releases.

Compares Favorably With Top Dystopian Novels

The Story. Continuing the story begun in Captives, Outcasts features the three brothers from Glenrock–Levi, Mason, and Omar–as they deal with their present circumstances as captives in the Safe Lands. They have rescued their women from the harem and now must do the same for their children who are either in the state boarding school or nursery.

Omar and Mason continue to live as nearly normal lives as possible while plotting with the people of Glenrock who live in hiding. Levi has taken up the mantle as elder and leader of his community, though he’s finding the role much more challenging than he could have imagined.

Who is he to trust? How can he get everyone on the same page, with Omar making his own superhero plans and constantly vapping and trading paint with Safe Land women, even as Shaylinn is carrying his baby; with Mason bent on finding a cure for the disease the flakers carry. What hope does Levi have to reunite all his people and get them to safety?

Strengths. I’m not sure where to start. The characters are so strong in this book--with complex motives and heartfelt struggles, both internal and external. They are captivating, so much so that when I finished reading the book, I found myself planning to go back to the story in the evening, only to realize that I had to wait until the next book comes out. The point is, I wanted to know what happened to the characters I’d come to care about.

But just as strong is the worldbuilding. The Safe Lands have their own entertainment, society celebrities, fads and fashions, slang, cliched greeting, technology, political system, and state secrets. The place feels real!

Which brings me to the plot. So much is going on in this story. There is the overarching question--can the Glenrock citizens escape? But there are relational questions for various characters, too, and then there is the greater question about the Safe Lands and what they are hiding, what they are doing to their citizens when they "liberate" them, and who might be behind the whole thing. The book is intriguing on some level on every page.

More importantly, Outcasts and the other books in the series are addressing important issues, without preaching. Rather, the choices the characters make show all that a reader needs in order to discern what worldview addresses the pressing problems best.

Weaknesses. I have no real complaints. I’m sold on this series and find myself lost in the world and engaged with the characters and the ideas presented in the story. It’s entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time.

Recommendation. Outcasts and The Safe Lands series are must reads. Anyone can embrace this story because it is one of struggle between two distinct ways of life which we all can understand and appreciate. The books are also about how the gulf between the two worldviews can be bridged and how the leadership of the two sides can go astray. It’s a big story, a powerful story and shouldn’t be missed.

It’s also clearly targeting older teens, but adults can appreciate the story just as well. The third book in the series, Rebels, is due out in August, so I suggest you read Captives and Outcasts between now and them so you won’t be left out.

The rebels are going to be exiled to the Lowlands where they are supposed to work. But no one comes back from there so they know they will die there if they are not rescued. I like a good adventure not only where there is action but where we are forced to think as well. In "Outcasts" Jill Williamson not only provides us adventure she also gives us much to think about. The brothers and their fellow adventurers are placed in deadly danger time and time again, much like the heroes from the movie serials. Ms. Williamson gives us such great characters that we are always rooting for them to succeed and get together with each other. Ms. Williamson has given us an admirable sequel and I look forward with much anticipation to the next and concluding book in this series.

An Excellent Resource

While it leaves the reader with a few unanswered questions, this is an excellent resource for anyone interested in alternatives to traditional gardening. My yard has limited space for a garden, and the soil is mostly rock and clay. I planted eight straw bales earlier this spring and, so far, although I made a few mistakes along the way (my fault, NOT the book's,) the results are exactly as predicted. Kudos to Mr. Karsten!

I live in Missouri this is a photo of my December tomatoes.

This morning I went to the garden to pick more tomatoes. I can hardly believe it's Dec 7th & we are still harvesting tomatoes. All season long we have had more than we can eat. This year we tried Straw Bale gardening. We have 4 bales & 8 tomato plants. My plants are still producing tomatoes. The heat from the straw bales keep the plants toasty. Great, don't you think?

A delightful tale

NOT a Children's Book

Folktales carry cultural messages that reflect the acceptable behaviors of the time. Sometimes, as in this case, the stories do not translate as socially correct behavior hundreds of years later. Many times, the tales are retold in current days in a new or modified form to be appropriate for the times. The wolf no longer eats Red Riding Hood, for example.

In this case, I believe most parents would not want to read this picture book to their children. A hunter thinks that a priest is really a tiger dressed up (or transformed?) as a priest, so he shoots and kills the priest. For the same reason, the hunter shoots and kills an old woman, a young girl, and a young man. In each case, after the person is killed, the dead body turns into a tiger.

I understand the heritage of folklore, and would find this tale -- which has an interesting ending -- entertaining in an adult study of Asian legends, but I don't recommend it in the form of a children's picture book.

About the Author
Kingsley Amis (1922–1995) was a popular and prolific British novelist, poet, and critic, widely regarded as one of the greatest satirical writers of the twentieth century. Born in suburban South London, the only child of a clerk in the office of the mustard-maker Colman’s, he went to the City of London School on the Thames before winning an English scholarship to St. John’s College, Oxford, where he began a lifelong friendship with fellow student Philip Larkin. Following service in the British Army’s Royal Corps of Signals during World War II , he completed his degree and joined the faculty at the University College of Swansea in Wales. Lucky Jim, his first novel, appeared in 1954 to great acclaim and won a Somerset Maugham Award. Amis spent a year as a visiting fellow in the creative writing department of Princeton University and in 1961 became a fellow at Peterhouse College, Cambridge, but resigned the position two years later, lamenting the incompatibility of writing and teaching (“I found myself fit for nothing much more exacting than playing the gramophone after three supervisions a day”). Ultimately he published twenty-four novels, including science fiction and a James Bond sequel; more than a dozen collections of poetry, short stories, and literary criticism; restaurant reviews and three books about drinking; political pamphlets and a memoir; and more. Amis received the Booker Prize for his novel The Old Devils in 1986 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990. He had three children, among them the novelist Martin Amis, with his first wife, Hilary Anne Bardwell, from whom he was divorced in 1965. After his second, eighteen-year marriage to the novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard ended in 1983, he lived in a London house with his first wife and her third husband.

David Lodge is a novelist and critic and Emeritus Professor of English Literature at the University of Birmingham, England. His novels include Changing Places, Small World, Nice Work, and A Man of Parts. His most recent works of criticism are Consciousness and the Novel and The Year of Henry James.

Can you tell a tale of a thoroughly unpleasant man and hold the reader's attention

There is a long tradition in many cultures of the lovable rogue the charming con man and his female counterpart the hooker with a heart of gold. Enter Roger Micheldene. Even his name is somewhat aggravating and in fact it's longer and more complicated than this but we only have to deal with that one obscure paragraph deep in the book. Roger is a man of some standing with his publishing firm but outside of whatever hold he has on an evidently comfortable job there is nothing likable about Roger. He is fat and irascible; given to adultery with as many women as have managed to hold his otherwise short attention span. He eats too much drinks incredible amounts, storms and threatens impotent violence over things that couldn't possibly be proper provocation and in fact the large mystery and perhaps the source of the satire is that people either befriend him or pretend to befriend him.

To be sure author Kingsley Amis intended One Fact English Man to be darkest humor and sharpest satire. In this short novella, 162 pages in this edition, we follow him as he moves about Budweiser College where for some strange reason he has visiting professor status. (One of the jokes of this short book is to see how many names of American beers you can identify.) Not only lionized in the college set but frequently serviced by various women even as he pursues the married Helene and ponders his second failing marriage back in England.

My suspicion is that the real satire here is not Roger but the various pretenses and shows of deference being staged partially for his entertainment by a presumably clever and sophisticated college set with whom he is mingling.

In one short phrase I do not remember laughing once at any point during this book. I rather doubt I ever smiled or otherwise quite got the humor. Part of the reason for my response to this book is one of the worst introductions I have ever read. David Lodge the author of this brief intro is normally one of my favorite writers and can usually be counted upon to say something humorous. Instead in about five pages Lodge focuses entirely on the possible link between the Roger of this book and Kingsley's own pending self-destructive habits.

There are autobiographical elements to this book based on the fact that both the author and Roger had visiting professor status in American colleges. There is more than some evidence that Kingsley Amis lived in a very dissipated life among his American counterparts. It is something of a legend that upon reading the script to this book Kinsley's first wife proceeded to divorce him.

There are swipes at all manner of pretensions whether academic literary gastronomic or for that matter cigars but the humor is so bleached bone dry that that it is difficult for a lover of dry humor to catch much of it.

Two things redeem One Fat Englishmen: it is very short and Kingsley Amis is a very adept wordsmith. I can recommend this book as an opportunity to enjoy the use of English. Indeed there are a few mostly unnecessary segues into minor differences between the English language as spoken in America and as spoken in England. The fixation on some of these very minor constructs may have been funny in the very early 60s.

An Aging Lucky Jim

I have to disagree with the other four reviewers who think this book was no good. I read Lucky Jim
Then the anti death league, then this. The anti death league wasn't very good, but the fat Englishman was quite amusing.
A bit of a meld of the older Van Veen and a (non pedophilic) Humbert almost. Academia is really a tower of s*** and Amis seemed to know this.
Lots of hilarious characters and situations

Hilarious but dark

On the back of the NYRB edition of ONE FAT ENGLISHMAN, a blub describes protagonist Roger Micheldene as “a literary publisher and lapsed Catholic…” and as “philandering, drunken, bigoted, and very fat, not to mention in a state of continuous spluttering rage against everything...” Well, IMO this character is hilarious as he schemes to bed the beautiful Helene, readies an explanation for rejecting the excellent first-novel of the cheeky Irving Macher, and exacts his stealthy revenge on the five-year-old Arthur, who beats him at Scrabble. But at some point, maybe the final ten percent of the book, the engine of the narrative shifts from Roger’s humorous and selfish scheming to his rage. Then, OFE seems to lose its edge, since the character Roger, without his scheming, seems to represent nothing bigger than his goatish and dipsomaniacal selfishness. OFE, in other words, ends small, when Amis does no more than show Roger’s ugly nature.

This is not to say that OFE is not an enjoyable book. On the contrary, this novel, which was published in 1963, probably shows the 41-year-old Kingsley Amis at the very peak of his comic and literary powers. Readers who enjoyed LUCKY JIM, THAT CERTAIN FEELING, THE GREEN MAN, and THE OLD DEVILS are sure to like this book as well, which is filled with caustic and comic insight. Here, for example, is Roger at a cocktail party, taking the measure of the young, talented, and assertive (everything Roger hates) Macher, who is talking to Grace, the party’s hostess.

“… hard to tell whether or not she thought she was having nonsense talked to her. Roger guessed she did, though without feeling as much conviction as he would have liked. To be sure about nonsense he had to be able to classify it, assign it to a family tree of liberal nonsense, humanistic-humanitarian nonsense, academic nonsense, Protestant nonsense, Freudian nonsense, and so on. Macher’s nonsense stopped before he could get deep enough into it… Roger sat watching like a sniper waiting for a clear shot at a general.”

This novel does seem to have a few flaws. For example, the motivation of the adulterous Helene eluded me while the social blindness of her pedantic husband did not seem credible. Nonetheless, OFE is not-to-be-missed by Kingsley’s fans. Rounded up and recommended.

GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!! I love this book, I definitely recommend it for young kids I think it is worth reading, especially if you are a Christian and want to Learn more about Jesus.

Perfect for Baptism gift, CCD teachers, young children!

I'm a mom of 3 & a preschool teacher, & I highly recommend this book. The simple, rhyming text tells of the many wonders of nature that God has given us, & the illustrations truly bring this book to life. (It's inspiring, yet fun also, due I think to the brilliant and lighthearted artwork.) While the image on the front of the book is in pastels, the inside is very bright, detailed, & cheerful, with pictures of flowers, animals, smiley children (dressed in seasonally appropriate clothing), sun, moon, clouds, stars... lots to look at & to discuss with little ones. (Both religion-wise & just basic concepts of seasons, nature, weather, etc.) Perfect for a Christian early childhood teacher!
I love that it's available in paperback, b/c at this price I will pick up a few for my children's CCD teachers and to have on hand to give with Christening gifts, or even to adults perhaps going through hard times who need a pick-me-up/ reminder of what we should be thankful for, (but in a fun, not preachy way.) :)

My son loved this book. He had me read it twice and wanted me to read it a third time. The pictures were bright and colorful and interesting to my child.

When I was asked to review the book, I thought it would be more about why we see rainbows after it rains and God's promise to never flood the earth again. But after reading it, I realized it's more about the different weather types and seasons. I was disappointed that it wasn't more what I expected, but nonetheless, my son loved it.

I would recommend this book if you are wanting something simple to teach your preschooler about the different seasons, weather and time of day.
