About the Author
Lynn H. Cohick (PhD in New Testament/Christian Origins, University of Pennsylvania) is professor of New Testament in the Department of Biblical and Theological Studies at Wheaton College and Graduate School, Wheaton, Illinois. Lynn has written on early Jewish/Christian relations in her book, Melito of Sardis: Setting, Purpose, and Sources (Brown Judaic Studies, 2000), and several articles on women in Early Judaism and earliest Christianity. She and her husband reside in Wheaton, Illinois.

Tremper Longman III (PhD, Yale University) is the Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies and the chair of the Religious Studies department at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he lives with his wife, Alice. He is the Old Testament editor for the revised Expositor's Bible Commentary and has authored many articles and books on the Psalms and other Old Testament books.

Scot McKnight (PhD, Nottingham) is professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary, Lombard, Illinois. He is the author of several books, including the award-winning The Jesus Creed, The King Jesus Gospel, One.Life, and The Blue Parakeet, as well as Galatians and 1 Peter in the NIV Application Commentary series. Accessible and very useful!

The Story of God Bible Commentary on Philippians by Lynn Cohick is an accessible commentary from an evangelical perspective published by Zondervan and based upon the New International Version 2011 of the Bible. The "Story of God" series (of which the author is one of the editors) is intended to "explain each passage of the Bible in light of the Bible's grand story." The basic organization of the commentary divides its treatment of a passage into three parts: listening to the story, explaining the story, and living the story. The series is not intended to be an academic commentary and this volume had a minimal number of footnotes. The author teaches New Testament at Wheaton College in Illinois.

I think that this commentary would be a very helpful volume for a pastor's library or for use by a bible study group focused on the letter to the Philippians. The explanations are generally understandable but are not afraid to wrestle with issues surrounding the text, making them very useful to the reader without a lot of theological training or an academic background. The author's prose is almost conversational at points, which can be jarring to the reader used to more traditional commentaries. The author is particularly adept at explaining textual issues in terms that highlight the major perspectives but are still clear to the lay reader.

The only missteps by the author seemed to arise when she was dealing the theological significance of certain texts. I found her explanation of the "new perspective" on Paul in the context of Philippians 3:1-14 to be somewhat unclear and think that it would be hard for a first-time reader to understand the significance of the "new perspective" from the commentary. The reader interested in this subject could compare the text in this commentary with Tom Wright's treatment of the same in chapter six of his book Justification: God's Plan & Paul's Vision. I also noticed that her reference to the "Nicene Creed" in connection with Philippians 2:6-11, complete with a footnote asserting that the creed "was approved in the First Ecumenical Council, AD 325," was actually quoting the text of the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, believed by some to have been published in the acts of the Second Ecumenical Council in AD 381. Perhaps a second edition could clarify some of the theological interpretation of the texts under consideration and recruit some ecumenical editors to check the references to church history.

Recommended, notwithstanding the concern noted above.

"exceptional blend of scholasticism and practical application"

I have thoroughly enjoyed my reading and study of this Bible commentary on the Epistle to the Philippians. Zondervan touts this series as “A new commentary for today’s world, the Story of God Bible Commentary explains and illuminates each passage of Scripture in light of the Bible’s grand story.” I believe they have hit their mark and I find myself very satisfied and impressed with the results of their efforts thus far (I have also been working through Sermon on the Mount in the same series, written by Scot McKnight).

One of the more impressive points for this series is the exceptional blend of scholasticism and practical application with which the commentary has been written. It does not take much reading to realize the erudite study that has gone into this work; however, the high level of academia never smothers the reader. On the contrary, I found my reading experience highly engaging.

There are several things about this commentary that makes it a new favorite of mine. First, I really like the format. Zondervan has employed a three-stage outline to assist the reader through reading God’s Story. Stage, or section one, encourages the reader to “Listen to the Story.” Zondervan explains it as follows: “Listen to the Story includes the complete New International Version text with references to other texts at work in each passage encouraging the reader to hear it within the Bible’s grand story.” Section two, “Explain the Story” is described as exploring and illuminating each text as embedded in its canonical and historical setting. Finally, section three, seeks to impart practical application through “Living the Story.”

Regarding this particular volume, Philippians, I very much enjoyed Lynn Cohick’s treatment of the Christ Hymn (aka kenosis or self-emptying of Christ). While there is a great deal of study and academic insight evident in her work, I particularly delighted in her synthesis and subjective interpretation of her material. I have employed many resources (commentaries, papers, essays, and other) in my own studies and I have found objective interpretations do not always provide me the stimulus I need to engage my own thinking.

If there were any point that I find criticism, it would be in documentation of the resources. The book is well documented and annotated. There are source references at the bottom of every page, Scripture and subject index, and an author index. While these are certainly adequate, I would prefer a comprehensive bibliography of sources included in the appendices.

I rank this volume with four-stars. I don’t think it should be a standalone commentary as it is lacking some of the key features of some of my favorite resources when engaging deep study (timelines, graphs, charts, textual criticisms, etc.). I do think this is a “must have” compliment to any other commentary resource that might be your personal favorite.

I look forward to working in more volumes from this series.

A Great Addition to the Story of God Series

The Story of God Bible Commentary Series is one of the few commentaries that I have found myself truly excited about. Scot McKnight's "Sermon on the Mount" provided an excellent start to the series, and Lynn Cohick's volume on Philippians continues the excellence.

Here are a few of my observations about this volume.

- Philippians is non-academic, yet engages historical and contemporary theology. All technical terms are defined in the text. Cohick writes with clarity and fluidity, keeping the reader focused and interested.

- The footnotes are generous but not overwhelming; primarily they are sources but they also offer expanded explanations of the text from time to time.

- I would call the perspective of the series and this volume in particular "open-minded evangelical." Cohick does a good job focusing on the text itself and allowing the Bible to interpret the Bible while at the same time engaging various theologians and ideas from across the spectrum.

- The author approaches Paul's letter from the four vantage points of:

The Character of God
The Nature of Our Salvation
The Character of the Believer in Christ
and The Character of Believers Together

- Each chapter of the commentary is divided into three sections:

1. "Listen to the Story." This is the text itself, the context thereof, and an eye-opening introduction.

2. "Explain the Story." This is the body of the commentary itself. Cohick is insightful and challenging while at the same time concise (Consider that she tackles Philippians 3:3 - which can be controversial - in only two paragraphs, relating it to the Jerusalem Council of Acts 15).

3. "Live the Story." This is the practical application of the text.

Overall, this is a very good commentary for the teacher, pastor, or layman, combining good theology with practical application and cultural relevance. I highly recommend this commentary and look forward to the coming volumes in the series.

Dit anker sy vertelling in konkrete, banale ervaring, ondermyn dit selfs, om so lewenskragtig gestalte te gee aan die mens se oerdilemma, naamlik sy gevangenheid tussen hemel en hel, tussen dit wat die mens is en dit wat hy wil wees. So lig soos klip is die verhaal van die bedenklike oorspronge van ons liefdes, en wat dit verg om die liefde as iets suiwers terug te wen.

I'm a huge historical fiction fan so I always try to stay aware of the newest books for young readers especially when they're in an atypical time period. We've seen a lot of the Edwardian age and the 1920s lately, especially seeing some glamour from the period but a lot less about the darker side like the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that anchors this book.

The book opens in Kiev 1905 and follows a Jewish family escaping a pogrom by moving to Berlin where they plan to save up to eventually reach America. This occurs in 1910 when daughter Miriam arrives and quickly gains employment at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory where the infamous fire occurs.

Honestly I thought a lot more of this book would focus on the fire but the majority of it is on their life in Europe, facing prejudices, looking forward to a freer life in America. It covers all the work they do to save up enough money and the rumors they sift through about what life might be like once they arrive. I thought some elements definitely seemed sugarcoated or simplified for its target audience. As a sometimes cynical reader, I was consistently surprised by how nice everyone was. I kept thinking maybe someone would try to rob Miriam or physically threaten her and while such occurrences are referenced, she is mostly safe as she can be.

The ending was especially interesting. It is an epilogue jumping forward to 1933 Nazi Germany and looking at Miriam's nephew. I loved how it reinforced the themes of bigotry against Jewish people which has been so important throughout the book as well as following up on some foreshadowing from earlier in the book. At first I thought it was odd or that it was serving as set-up to a sort of sequel to this book but upon further reflection, I found it satisfactory.

While I found this book quite pleasant, it didn't have the emotional punch to the gut I would have liked to really connect with its contents. Everything just felt so young. I feel like this may be better suited for its target audience, which I would classify as middle-grade. It could serve as an introduction to the period, to antisemitism, to life for immigrants, to labor conditions, etc.

Interesting YA Historical Fiction

Miriam's village is destroyed by fire during a pogrom in Russia and the family is forced into a ghetto in Kiev. Like so many others, her family dreams of moving to the Golden Land of America. The family moves to Berlin and, after years of saving, her father emigrates to America. He quickly finds work and saves until he can send for the rest of the family. But Miriam's young sister is too sick to go and her brother, Yuri, refuses. Finally, only Miriam goes. She finds work at the Triangle Shirtwaist Co. and is happy at the job although it is long hours. A year later, on March 25, 1911, a fire breaks out. It spreads rapidly and over 140 workers die.

Fortunately, Miriam survives. Still, she and her father are determined to bring the rest of the family over and continue to work hard until they do, all except Yuri, Miriam's brother who has always dreamed of being a soldier and has never wanted to go to America.

The book ends in an epilogue several years later and given in a new voice, that of Yuri's son. It is 1933 and Nazism has gripped Germany. Jews are openly hated, Jewish businesses are boycotted, and Yuri's half-Jewish son dreams of going to America. The story ends shortly after the infamous book burnings of April 6, 1933, meant to 'cleanse' Germany of all supposed anti-German sentiment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this YA historical fiction novel by Canadian author Irene Watts. Some of the history referenced in the book may be too disturbing for young children,especially the descriptions of the factory fire as many of the workers leapt from the high floors. However, for older children and for adults this is a very well-written look at some important historical events, because, as has been pointed out by people as diverse as Edmund Burke and Lemony Snicket, those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it.
