As the secularization of law took hold, judges spoke as oracles of a transcendent rationality and social order, thus commanding obedience. In court testimonies, pamphlets, poems, and novels, however, voices of resistance responded with justifications derived from higher laws. Figures such as John Brown cursed the tribunals of the state and its oracles. Reformers who saw the danger in their fanaticism and tried to regulate such speech, however, did not always welcome their enthusiasm. Meanwhile, a doctrine of separate public versus private spheres led women writers such as Harriet Beecher Stowe to enunciate an alternative discourse of intimate influence whose purported limitation to the private sphere was a mask enabling very public acts of social and political critique. Smith shows how much is at stake in these controversies. He does so through fascinating and wide-ranging examples drawn from legal cases and popular literature, crafting a thoroughly researched, persuasive study that is original and important. (G. Ek het lank gesoek na 'n boek wat my meer inligting kon gee oor bipolariteit - nie net die simptome nie, maar wel die funksionele saamleef daarmee. Die vorige boeke wat ek gelees het was verdoemend. Alhoewel Elsabe die verdoemende siekte beskryf het soos dit is, het sy my die hoop gegee dat die beter verstaan van die siekte wat mens beter beheer oor die uitkoms gee, tog wel bestaan. Ook oor hoe belangrik die ondersteuningsstruktuur van die persoon met bipolariteit is. Haar boek het my hoop gegee. Ek is oneindig jammer vir haar dat dit op haar pad gekom het om hierdeur te gaan en ook baie trots op haar vir haar innerlike sterkte om elke keer bo dit uit te styg.

After reading it, I want to know more about this illness. I think this is a book about embracing this 'monster' in oneself, also about the victory after accepting.

Ek dink hierdie is 'n boek vir almal wat een of ander psigiatriese 'siekte' ondervind , of met iemand wat dit ondervind, in 'n verhouding te wees. Om te weet is om te verstaan.

A Great Read and Resource

This book is an easy read and has many practical applications. It uses a great deal of scripture to establish a Biblical precedent for supernatural phenomena. The chapters are fairly short, and most of them end with an "Activation" activity that allows the reader to stop and apply what has been learned. I highly recommend this book for all who desire to develop ears that hear, eyes that see, and a heart that understands!

This is a great book! It is not mystical or spooky. It is a practical discussion of what is missing from modern day Christianity. We read great stories of faith, healing and prophecy in the bible only to find these missing from today's modern day churches. Did we become Christ followers to have a Sunday routine or to see and experience the real power of God's Love? This book will give you some things to think about. Perhaps our scientific approach to life does not fit the approach we need to use when seeking God. Read the book...

Putting it into Practise

I bought this as a gift for my wife and she said that she liked it. It brought confirmation about somethings she had already experienced, added new information and the activations at the end of each chapter were practical, and helpful. It didn't hurt that it was an easy to read book either.
