Water and Fire: The Quest of the Cushite Warrior, by Gregory Dupree

"A truly inspirational novel, Water and Fire: The Quest of the Cushite Warrior follows the journey of Adjua Babatu throughout his pilgrimage ultimately finding the Gospel of Christ, Son of God. Gregory Dupree cleverly tells the story, set in Biblical times, of a man searching for his purpose not realizing his beliefs as being ideologically aligned with what will eventually become Christianity. By writing in this way, the reader is taken on an adventure, traveling on Camel, living among Shepherds and Jewish settlers, witnessing Roman law. Living a daily existence while witnessing firsthand the ""grass roots"" formation of the congregations teaching the words of Jesus Christ. This technique brought life to the pages of Biblical history, and clarity to the human struggle in forming our civilization from tribal societies. Awakening as the sole surviving warrior on a battlefield encompassing thousands of corpses over miles of destruction, Adjua Babatu, an Ethiopian spirited warrior from birth, is overcome by the killing ever so commonplace. He has killed without remorse, and now regurgitates at the thought of his sickening actions. What has changed within him? Why has his ""Lion Heart"" so weakened causing his dreams to torment him so? Feeling divinely saved from death, he vowed never to kill again. Thus he begins a journey during the years following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ throughout the Holy Lands of Jerusalem among the Hebrews, Romans and Greeks to seek an end to his nightmares.
With scholarly detail and historical accuracy, Water and Fire takes the reader on a journey back in time two millenniums enabling one to disembark from modern ways and return to the roots of our beliefs. Gregory Dupree uses many footnotes to help define the vernacular of the language and providing technical understandings throughout his masterpiece, reaching a level of credibility to his writing. The closeness to accuracy sets apart his work from a simply categorically fictional piece. —REVIEW by: Gary Sorkin, Pacific Book Review"

Water and Fire: A truly superb and extraordinary book by Gregory P. Dupree
By Elgin Young
Immediately I knew I was in the hands of a master storyteller and in for an epic tale of "barbaric" proportions.

Water and Fire is a captivating, pulse pounding, easy read. Author Gregory P. Dupree crafts one of the most memorable and compelling characters in fiction to date.

Adjua Babatu is the formidable Cushite protagonist possessing an array of uncanny combat skills, masterfully illustrated in the primordial battles of brute force spilling over from one page to the next - quite reminiscent of Marvel Comics legend Conan the Cimmerian, aka, Conan the Barbarian.

By forging an all consuming inner conflict within Adjua Babatu, Dupree keenly sculpts an indomitable warrior beset on purging his much tormented soul, beginning with his quest and new age leap of faith - the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Think . . . "Conan the Christian crusader". Well . . . maybe not.

Nevertheless, Babatu's wanderlust for redemption of past sins is contrasted and surpassed only by the arduous journey, which encounters those of much less faith.

This book not only takes me back to those thrilling adventures of the great warrior classics, but it also transcend into a spiritual awakening never before amassed by other books of this genre.

Mr. Dupree's clever verbiage and knowledge of this era is incredibly cogent and plausible. This is indeed an exciting and great masterwork. Bravo Mr. Dupree! Bravo!

Verginius Rufus und der Aufstand des Vindex: Das Vierkaiserjahr (German Edition), by Markus Wagner

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 1,8, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Kaiser Nero beendete seine Regentschaft am 9. Juni 68 n.

The Christmas Wish, by Lori Evert

In the tradition of The Snowman, The Polar Express, and the many books of Jan Brett this cozy Nordic tale filled with extraordinary photographs will have readers of all ages believing in the magic of Christmas. This is one to pull out every year and savor.

Long ago, a brave little girl named Anja wanted to be one of Santa's elves. So she leaves a note for her family and helps her elderly neighbor prepare for the holiday, then she straps on her skis, and heads out into the snowy landscape. From a red bird to a polar bear to a reindeer, a menagerie of winter animals help Anja make her way to Santa. A generous trim-size, matte cover, and foiled title make this a special book for the holiday season.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Anja longs to be one of Santa's elves. Dressed in full Nordic regalia complete with red gnomic hat, she certainly looks the part. A thoughtful and helpful child, she acts the part as well. When she skis off in her quest to find Santa, a bird, horse, musk ox, polar bear, and reindeer show her the way. The full-page photographs look like they could be movie stills, so sharp and seamless are the figures that Anja and the animals cut against the winter landscape of Northern lights, glaciers, and snowy pine trees. While the scenes of Anja offering an apple to the reindeer or curled up next to the sleeping polar bear are whimsical and look unaltered, other images are obviously manipulated. Further, the story reads as if it were written around the pictures, rather than the other way around. Nonetheless, the striking winter visuals and the adorable heroine carry the day.-Joanna Fabicon, Los Angeles Public Library α(c) Copyright 2013. "A captivating Christmas story with a magic all its own.” --Starred, Kirkus Reviews

"…rosy-cheeked Anja looks like she’s stepped out of a fairy tale, and Breiehagen’s delicious (and, necessarily, digitally altered) photographs of her riding on the back of a polar bear and meeting Santa amid the snowy pines of the North Pole create the sense that magic is very real." -- Starred, Publishers Weekly

"[The Christmas Wish] points to both the timelessness and the otherworldliness of a child's Christmastime wonder." --The Horn Book

"…this cozy Nordic tale filled with extraordinary photographs will have readers of all ages believing in the magic of Christmas. This is one to pull out every year and savor." --The Children's Book Review

Delightful Story and the Photography is GORGEOUS and Cute
By The Invisible Pam
THE CHRISTMAS WISH is adorable. The photographs and costuming are charming, and Lori Evert has managed to write a simple and compelling story that is likely to please adults as well as children.

Besides the beautiful photography what I liked about the book was the kindness exhibited by Anja and the animals. Anja, for example, before she heads out to find Santa so she can become one of his helpers, visits a elderly neighbor. Anja catches the widow's cat, so that the old woman won't have to go out into the deep snow to do this, and then Anja sweeps out the woman's sauna and does some other chores. I found this very appealing and suitable to the season and what I want my children to learn.

THE CHRISTMAS WISH is not a book with an emphasis on the religious reason for Christmas. But It still fits the season because of it's emphasis on kindness.

Glorious photography and an instant classic
By R. Mork
An adorable little girl, gorgeous winter landscapes, and instantly familiar animals, all gloriously put together by a superbly talented photographer.

Norway has rich traditions in handcrafts, architecture, and particularly in fairy tales. If you have even a passing familiarity with Scandinavia, you'll appreciate rich but subtle references in Anja's finely handcrafted Norwegian clothing and accessories, the iconicałly Norwegian farm buildings, and various cultural and literary references in the story itself. If such wonders are unfamiliar to you, you've been missing out and this book will be the perfect introduction.

This is a simple but magical book and an instant classic.

Could Be One of My Favorite Children's (or Adult's!) Books Ever
By Susan Scholer
This is a remarkable book! I bought it for my 3 yr. old Granddaughter and it arrived today. It FAR exceeded my expectations! Although the draw for me was our Norwegian ancestry and the beautiful photographs (and the fact that Anja and our Granddaughter could be twins), the message wins the prize. This is a must Christmas book for every family, and not just one with young children. I am ordering 2 more just because I know I'll give them away. Should get some sort of prize!

Dissident Gardens: A Novel (Vintage Contemporaries), by Jonathan Lethem

A dazzling novel from one of our finest writers—an epic yet intimate family saga about three generations of all-American radicals

At the center of Jonathan Lethem’s superb new novel stand two extraordinary women: Rose Zimmer, the aptly nicknamed Red Queen of Sunnyside, Queens, is an unreconstructed Communist who savages neighbors, family, and political comrades with the ferocity of her personality and the absolutism of her beliefs. Her precocious and willful daughter, Miriam, equally passionate in her activism, flees Rose’s influence to embrace the dawning counterculture of Greenwich Village.
These women cast spells over the men in their lives: Rose’s aristocratic German Jewish husband, Albert; her cousin, the feckless chess hustler Lenny Angrush; Cicero Lookins, the brilliant son of her black cop lover; Miriam’s (slightly fraudulent) Irish folksinging husband, Tommy Gogan; their bewildered son, Sergius. Flawed and idealistic, Lethem’s characters struggle to inhabit the utopian dream in an America where radicalism is viewed with bemusement, hostility, or indifference.
As the decades pass—from the parlor communism of the ’30s, McCarthyism, the civil rights movement, ragged ’70s communes, the romanticization of the Sandinistas, up to the Occupy movement of the moment—we come to understand through Lethem’s extraordinarily vivid storytelling that the personal may be political, but the political, even more so, is personal.
Lethem’s characters may pursue their fates within History with a capital H, but his novel is—at its mesmerizing, beating heart—about love.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Lethem extends his stylistically diverse, loosely aligned, deeply inquiring saga of New York City (Motherless Brooklyn, 1999; The Fortress of Solitude, 2003; Chronic City, 2009) with a richly saturated, multigenerational novel about a fractured family of dissidents headquartered in Queens. It’s 1955, and witty, voluble, passionate Rose Zimmer—an Eastern European Jew, worshipper of Abraham Lincoln, and street-patrolling leftist—has outraged her communist comrades by having an affair with Douglas Lookins, an African American policeman. She, in turn, is wrathful when she catches Miriam, her smart and gutsy15-year-old daughter, in bed with a college student. Lethem circles among his tempestuous narrators and darts back and forth in time, landing on historical hot spots as he traces the paths of radical Rose; Douglas’ brainy, skeptical son, Cicero, who becomes an audacious college professor; intrepid Miriam, who marries a folksinger desperately searching for authenticity, and their woebegone son, Sergius, who is led astray by a sexy Occupier. Lethem is breathtaking in this torrent of potent voices, searing ironies, pop-culture allusions, and tragicomic complexities. He shreds the folk scene, eviscerates quiz shows, pays bizarre tribute to Archie Bunker, and offers unusual perspectives on societal debacles and tragic injustices. A righteous, stupendously involving novel about the personal toll of failed political movements and the perplexing obstacles to doing good. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Best-selling Lethem will tour the country with this provocative novel in sync with numerous media appearances and lots of press coverage, all supported by print and online advertising. --Donna Seaman

From Bookforum
Lethem structures Dissident Gardens as a series of broadly chronological episodes, moving deftly from one consciousness to another, making the novel an extended family affair over three generations. The downside to this episodic approach to such a large-scale story is that we don’t get the sense of continuous immersion in the life of any one character. Dissident Gardens is—in a beautiful and unsettling way—a deeply agnostic novel, only briefly tolerant of any one parent or child’s inner Sturm und Drang. The point is the dissonance, the way in which one life, one ideology, one voice, never quite succeeds at crowding the others out—partly as a result of time and mortality, and partly because ideologues never stop being fallible human beings. The novel achieves a kind of hard-won grace and equanimity that none of its characters could imagine. —Jess Row

Review
"Claiming to have lost my reviewer's copy of Jonathan Lethem's Dissident Gardens, I asked his publicist at Doubleday to send a couple more galleys my way...I wanted the additional copies so I could press them into the hands of close family and dear friends, telling them as I did so: 'Here, read the year's best novel.'"
--Alexander Nazaryan for The New Republic

"Lethem is as ambitious as Mailer, as funny as Philip Roth and as stinging as Bob Dylan...Dissident Gardens shows Lethem in full possession of his powers as a novelist, as he smoothly segues between historical periods and internal worlds...Erudite, beautifully written, wise, compassionate, heartbreaking and pretty much devoid of nostalgia."
--Los Angeles Times

"While collective memory might offer some hazy grasp of McCarthyism and the Hollywood black-lists, all but forgotten is the real American Communist Party and its Depression-era heyday. In this epic and complex new novel, Lethem considers what happened to the ACP, as well as some other questions, about material isolation and filial resentment...The cast makes for a heady, swirly mix of fascinating, lonely people. Lethem's writing, as always, packs a witty punch. The epoch each character inhabits is artfully etched and the book is as illuminating of 20th-century American history as it is of the human burden of overcoming alienation."

“An assured, expert literary performance by one of our most important writers…That Lethem has taken us so close to the Promised Land of a rejuvenated proletarian fiction with this magnificent novel gives us reason to be hopeful.”
--The Los Angeles Review of Books

“An emotionally complex, stylistically sophisticated [novel] from one of America’s most brilliant writers, Jonathan Lethem…Dissident Gardens is a supremely peculiar tale. But as a story about a quarrelsome family entangled with impossible ideals, it’s touchingly universal…Where else can you read really funny Marxist baseball jokes? Or see how commie parents would dress their children for Halloween? That dialectical tension between mirth and intellectuality has always been Lethem’s most alluring quality, and it accounts for the unpredictability of Dissident Gardens. His finesse is on full display in the final chapter, a seemingly slight encounter at the airport that shifts in a blink to a reflection on our harrowing isolation, the tragic lack of comradeship that defines our modern age.”
--The Washington Post

“A novel jampacked with the human energy of a crowded subway car…It’s a big book set in small spaces – kitchen, classroom, folky nightclub – that keep its battles personal at all times…[A] wild, logorrheic, hilarious and diabolical novel. Those who reflexively compare Mr. Lethem to other Jonathans, like Jonathan Franzen, would be better off invoking Philip Roth.”
--The New York Times

"[A] stunning new novel...Spanning several major events -- from 1930s McCarthyism through the recent Occupy Wall Street movement --  and featuring an imaginative nonlinear time sequence so that the novel's particulars arrive at unexpected moments, this work is a moving, hilarious satire of American ideology and utopian dreams...Lethem enthusiasts may find this to be his best yet. Very highly recommended."
--Library Journal, starred review

"A dysfunctional family embodies a dysfunctional epoch, as the novelist continues his ambitious journey through decades, generations and the boroughs of New York...The setup of this novel is so frequently funny that it reads like homage to classic Philip Roth."
--Kirkus Reviews

"[This] novel's powerful and polarizing cultural, political, and racial energies are animated by a typically Lethem-esque cast of zanies, communalists, sexual adventurers, innocents, druggies, dreamers, and do-gooders -- cosmopolitans all -- whose lives collide and clash with gut-busting humor, heart, and hubris, which Lethem delivers in his seductively vertiginous prose."
--Elle

"In the past two decades, Jonathan Lethem has written, co-authored or edited 23 books, picking up a MacArthur 'genius' grant along the way. He shows no signs of flagging in his rich ninth novel, Dissident Gardens, an evocative, deeply sympathetic work about three generations of New Yorkers caught up in personal and global politics...It's also no small thing that this famously Brooklynite author has brought to life some of the neglected borough of Queens -- and so much life, so artfully, persuasively created. When a book pulls me for so long into a beautifully made world, there's always a strange sensation upon the last page: I feel the air yanked from me in a sigh for endings and a whoosh of wow."
--Bloomberg.com

“Dissident Gardens is Jonathan Lethem’s big book, a Buddenbrooks transported from Lübeck, Germany, to Queens, New York. Old-fashioned and epic in all the proper ways, spanning generations, full of history and human yearning, yet post-post-modern enough to include in its awareness of itself The History Of The Novel…With this effort, Lethem yearns to make sense of a century of American longing, the same longing that created the very notion of the Great American Novel. And if the author comes up short, that only means more yearning, more longing, and (hopefully) more novels like this one.”
--The A.V. Club

"Jonathan Lethem's latest novel, Dissident Gardens, is a tour de force, a brilliant, satiric journey through America's dissident history from 1930s-era communism to today's Occupy movement."
-- The Star Tribune

"[Dissident Gardens] is a real tragedy of errors, the characters all destined, like their ideals, for failure. But their vessel, a true novel of ideas, soars, like Sputnik, against all odds."

Wish I loved it more

**1/2
I expected to fall in love with this book, but I was disappointed for several reasons. It's too topical, over-written, and tries to tell too many stories. And what it up with that cover? It's the ugliest book jacket ever.

As a boomer, the subject matter and the times are of great interest to me. But recently I'm finding books that try to incorporate every political and social cliché from the last 50 years. I've lived through those decades, and while most of us were influenced by the events, we were not directly touched by every single one of them. Here we meet communists, the Sandinistas, the Occupy movement, the `60's folk music craze, gay people coming out, detention by FTA authorities, East German spies, etc, etc. I had the same problem with "The Interestings" and several other books.

Despite much well-crafted writing, this is yet another book in search of a merciless editor. There are some true gems embedded within the text, and the trick is to find them. At just over 360 pages, "Dissident Gardens" gets bogged down with lots of language and feels like a much longer read.

Of the three generations of radicals whose stories are told, I was only intrigued by the first two, Rose and Miriam. I am very grateful for interesting women. Fortunately, each chapter centers around one of three, and I chose to skim lots of Sergius.

I think "Dissident Gardens" isn't sure which story it wants to tell. I wish authors would decide what they want to focus on, depicting a flavor of an era without cluttering the plot. All the elements of a great book are here. I'd like to just cut it up and paste the best parts back together.

The story accretes through nearly 400 pages
By Jessica Weissman
Jonthan Lethem loves New York, ideas, words, and vivid characters in about that order. His new novel tells the story of two unusual women and their men and their times and their children in a loosely spiraling fashion. The story is definitely not told from beginning to end, though the novel does start near the beginning of the story. He conjures up a New York neighborhood of radicals, and a bunch of radicals to populate it. Their odd lives and relations are told elliptically, with information accreting over the chapters as certain mysteries become clearer.

Paragraph by paragraph he's a miracle worker, but I am not sure he achieved his aim in this novel. If you have no tolerance for radicals or of folksingers, you'll hate this. If you want your stories with a direct bang and a lot of compact drama, stop after the first few chapters and spare yourself. But if you want to understand how the legacy of an idealistic movement works on people after the movement has betrayed itself and is over, and on their children, this is for you. Maybe someday Lethem will write about what happened to the hippies and war protesters of the 60s and to their children.

Ultimately, if you have patience and like the sometimes florid narrative style Lethem uses here, and are willing to let some mysteries hang, you'll be rewarded. If you don't mind plenty of what might seem extraneous information and observation, stay the course. Otherwise stay away.

Let me start
By Michael Moore
by saying I'm an unabashed fan of some, of some, maybe most of Jonathan Lethem's work. In the late nineties, when I came across him, Lethem was a genre busting novelist particularly busting the crime noir genre with Gun, With Occasional Music where evolved animals are commonplace and police monitor citizens' Karma.

As She Climbed Across the Table, my sentimental favorite is a send-up of academia and science fiction. The faculty Christmas party rivals anything in Richard Russo's Straight Man. Girl in Landscape, another personal favorite combined science fiction with western, (John Ford type westerns) and Amnesia Moon is Lethem's riff on post apocalyptic novels.

My overall favorite of all his novels is Motherless Brooklyn. The characters were vivid and developed, the setting is a character and the action is always moving. A main character with Tourette's Syndrome had to be a challenge but Lethem walked a fine line between believability and not allowing the disability to be a main focus. It was like detective with an alcohol problem. I have to admit that I read but was not a fan of Fortress of Solitude. I found it dense and in need of editing. I find the same is true with Dissident Gardens.

This is a hard novel to review because there just is so much packed in to it. I found the novel badly in need of editing. There are too many stories swirling around and they tend to break up the momentum. I didn't need so much about Tommy Gogan especially when I am intrigued by Miriam and her relationship with Rose which I found far more interesting than how she and Tommy met I thought the novel worked best when focused around Rose and Miriam with characters in orbit, not with characters as separate stories altogether

Then there are all these densely packed sentences. Try this one about Rose's black lover: "Her black cop, noble enduring grandson of slavery, starved husband and disgruntled father, Bulge veteran, Eisenhower Republican, six foot-two and near three hundred pounds of moral lumber, of withheld rage and battened sorrow, embodied cypher of American fate stalking Greenpoint Avenue rattling kids off doorsteps and out from where they ganged around parking meters, daring anyone utter a cross-eyed word-the man should have from Rose whatever he required." No doubt it was a fun sentence to write but there are a lot of these.

The novel follows dissidents Rose Zimmer and her daughter Miriam through several decades from the 40's to Miriam and Tommy's son trying to occupy something other than an airport. Secondary characters like Lenny Angrush (and we all know a Lenny who is everyone's older cousin) and Cicero Lookins, the son of Rose's black policeman lover, who becomes a professor (and whose life is heavily Rose influenced) which allows Lethem more fun with academics, are all interesting characters who revolve around Rose and Miriam, but have their own stories. With these characters, Lethem hits the right amount of involvement and interest. It's just that he can go off on tangents...Rose's husband, the lost Albert, the opportunistic dissident Sol Eaglin and so on. There's just so much. The novel flits across a dissident landscape from WWII, Vietnam, Contras, and Occupy Wall Street.

The other thing to keep in mind if you are planning to read this novel and there are very good reasons to read it, is that the chapters are like a Kurt Vonnegut novel and unstuck in time. A reader finds no chronology other than what she or he can keep in mind.

Finally, I read this novel right after reading the Flamethrowers by Roberta Kushner, which is also about dissidents, sort of, but during some of the same time period and found the two uneasy bookends.

Shaping Our Nation: How Surges of Migration Transformed America and Its Politics, by Michael Barone

It is often said that America has become culturally diverse only in the past quarter century. But from the country’s beginning, cultural variety and conflict have been a centrifugal force in American politics and a crucial reason for our rise to power.

The peopling of the United States is one of the most important stories of the last five hundred years, and in Shaping our Nation, bestselling author and demographics expert Michael Barone illuminates a new angle on America’s rise, using a vast array of political and social data to show America is the product of a series large, unexpected mass movements—both internal and external—which typically lasted only one or two generations but in that time reshaped the nation,  and created lasting tensions that were difficult to resolve.

Barone highlights the surprising trends and connections between the America of today and its migrant past, such as how the areas of major Scots-Irish settlement in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War are the same areas where John McCain performed better in the 2008 election than George W. Bush did in 2004, and how in the years following the Civil War, migration across the Mason-Dixon line all but ceased until the annealing effect that the shared struggle of World War II produced. Barone also takes us all the way up to present day, showing what the surge of Hispanic migration between 1970 and 2010 means for the elections and political decisions to be made in the coming decades.

Barone shows how, from the Scots-Irish influxes of the 18th century, to the Ellis Island migrations of the early 20th and the Hispanic and Asian ones of the last four decades, people have moved to America in part in order to make a better living—but more importantly, to create new communities in which they could thrive and live as they wanted. And the founders’ formula of limited government, civic equality, and tolerance of religious and cultural diversity has provided a ready and useful template for not only to coping with these new cultural influences, but for prospering as a nation with cultural variety.

Sweeping, thought-provoking, and ultimately hopeful, Shaping Our Nation is an unprecedented addition to our understanding of America’s cultural past, with deep implications for the immigration, economic, and social policies of the future.

Review
"Lively, entertaining, and informative." -Alvin Felzenberg, The Weekly Standard

“Reading Michael Barone on politics and demography is like sampling a tasting menu prepared by a fine chef. His latest offering, Shaping Our Nation, does not disappoint…The book is a delightful read, full of color and stories of people and just enough data to inform and satisfy...It is a treat for the reader, and will trick you into knowing more about modern politics than you might otherwise have wanted to discover.” -Washington Times

“An honest, objective exploration of how immigrants changed the identity of the United States.” -Washington Independent Review of Books

“There is bipartisan Washington agreement about exactly one thing: No one else knows as much about anything as Michael Barone knows about American politics. This is confirmed by his sparkling study of the migrations that have made, and continue to make, our nation what it is.” –George F. Will, columnist, The Washington Post

Michael Barone, who created the indispensable Almanac of American Politics and has been updating it since 1972, knows the United States and its political contours from our largest cities to our smallest hamlets in all 3,033 of the nation’s counties. In The Great Surge, he applies that panoramic knowledge to the peopling of the nation, describing not just where our forebears originated, but how the many waves of migration within America have shaped our culture, politics, and destiny. The Great Surge added a new dimension to my understanding of American history.   –Charles Murray, bestselling author of Coming Apart and The Bell Curve

"Nobody knows the political map of the United States better than Michael Barone.  In this fascinating, fast-paced history he explains who we Americans are, where we came from, when, and why." –Walter A. McDougall, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, University of Pennsylvania

“Michael Barone dazzles in this eminently lucid and fair minded account of how a series of great migrations from colonial times to the present day shaped American cultural and political history. Linking today's Asian and Hispanic waves of immigrants to the Irish, Germans and others who came before, Barone reminds us that American identity has always been a work in progress. At a time when many doubt America's resilience and coherence, Barone offers solid ground for hope that America's future will be as rich, as complex and ultimately as fulfilling as anything we've seen in the past.” –Walter Russell Mead, professor, Bard College, editor-at-large, The American Interest

“As Michael Barone's The Great Surge demonstrates, America's history is largely one of migrations, a process that continues today. If you want to understand what divides Americans in terms of regions and ethnicity, Barone's book is essential. It also helps to remind us what has united us as a people through all these demographic storms, and can do so in the future.” –Joel Kotkin, author of The Next Hundred Million

“Michael Barone paints an illuminating demographic portrait that shows how historical migration surges and pauses, mostly unanticipated, profoundly shaped enduring regional interests in this country.  Anyone wanting to understand today’s divisive politics and how we got here needs to read this book.” –William H Frey, Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution and Research Professor, Population Studies Center, University of Michigan

Coming to America
By Michael P. Lefand
Michael Barone's "Shaping Our Nation: How Surges of Migration Transformed America and its Politics" is an examination of the periodic surges of various ethnic groups as they immigrated to the United States and internally migrated between states. He looks at the reasons, such as economic stress, wars, and expansion as the United States looked to the western frontier. A study of how immigration both past and present continues to affect our economy and our culture. Why they came and where they settled, and at times picked up roots and moved to different areas of the country.

The transportation revolution with the advent of the steam engine in the 1800's increased travel by railroad and by ships and made it easier for people to move around both between nations and within them. Immigration to the United States increased with Europe's crop failure, especially when the blight wiped out a third of the potato crop in Ireland. Barone describes how this rapid influx resulted in a greater dispersion of immigrants in the north, the entry point for the majority, and its consequential increase of growth in northern cities over southern ones.

A new wave of immigrants in urban neighborhoods was also a catalyst for violence as different ethnic and political groups attacked each other because of language and custom barriers. Some of these problems can still be found in cities today with continued legal and illegal immigration taking place. At times conditions could rival that of living on the frontier in the west.

Barone looks at how women rights, slavery, and World War II were catalyst for the movement of people. World War II was a major surge as people came from abroad to escape tyranny and internally many migrated north during the war to fill jobs with the mobilization of industry.

Immigration is an important topic especially given today's illegal immigration which has almost become an invasion. Barone writes about Mexican immigrants who have been arriving in vast numbers since the 1980's. In his comparison of previous immigrants he writes "On average they come with lower levels of education and lower skill levels than immigrants from any other country, with illegals probably having even lower levels than legal immigrants" (page 251).

While "Shaping Our Nation" is a book filled with relevant statistical data it is presented in a very understandable way. I think this book is worthy of 5 stars and recommend it for its fascinating topic that can be kept as a reference for those interested in United States History.

A Terse, Compelling Examination of the Demographic and Political Impact of Various Ethnic Groups on American History
By John Kwok
Surprisingly terse, but quite expansive in scope, Michael Barone's "Shaping Our Nation: How Surges of Migration Transformed America and Its Politics" is an excellent overview of the ethnic demographic history of the United States from its initial settlements as the "Thirteen Original Colonies" to the present. In separate chapters devoted to the demographic and political impact of the Scotch-Irish (Chapter One), New England Yankees and Southern "Grandees" (Chapter Two), Irish and Germans (Chapter Three), Southern and Central Europeans (Chapter Four), the great Northward migration of Southern Blacks (Chapter Five) and the ongoing immigration by Latinos and Asians (Chapter Six), Barone tells a compelling saga about American history as seen from the demographic and political impact that each of these ethnic groups had on the United States. Relying on economic and political demographic data, Barone notes repeatedly how these ethnic groups have had a substantial impact on the local, state and even, national, politics in the towns and counties they've resided, whether they are first generation immigrants or those whose ancestors immigrated to the United States centuries ago. To his credit Barone has written a compelling saga of migration to - and within - the United States as compelling as anything written by Thomas Sowell.

Especially illuminating for U.S. history and political/social science buffs
By Neal Reynolds
To start with, let's say that this is an especially valuable book for college students majoring in the above subjects. These readers are those who can help make a difference in the future of out country.

Michael Baroni's perspective is from the conservative side of the aisle, but on the moderate side. His conclusions are academically sound and aren't to be dismssed, even by those more inclined to the liberal viewpoint. The point the author is strongest on is pinpointing the effect of migration surges through the history of our country.

While I especally suggest this for our future voters and influential citizens now in college, this is most definitely for all of us older folks too. His expertise is especially in demographics and their analysis.

This isn't an easy book to read, but it sure is a rewarding one. If you have even the slightest interest in the history and politics of our country, this book is for you.
