Ten Billion, by Stephen Emmott

A VINTAGE ORIGINAL

Just over two hundred years ago, there were one billion humans on Earth.

There are now over seven billion of us.

And, sometime this century, the world population will reach at least ten billion.

Deforestation. Desertification. Species extinction. Global warming. Growing threats to food and water. The driving issues of our times are the result of one huge problem: Us.

As the population continues to grow, our problems will increase. And this means that every way we look at it, a planet of ten billion people is likely to be a nightmare.

Stephen Emmott, a scientist whose lab is at the forefront of research into complex natural systems, sounds the alarm. TEN BILLION is a snapshot of our planet, and our species, approaching a crisis, and a stark analysis of where this leaves us. TEN BILLION is not another climate book. TEN BILLION is a book about us.

From Publishers Weekly
This muscular but anxious broadside by Emmott, a Cambridge scientist, predicts a bleak future of critical shortages, droughts, starvation, and natural disasters once the Earth's population reaches the book's eponymous number. Whether it's water or food, population trends mean that present levels of consumption can't continue. The author is forceful, if frantic, in supplying the numbers. Forty percent of the planet is already devoted to agriculture, with governments and conglomerates in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia quickly gobbling up the remaining land. As the global population grows in number and wealth, the demand for food and resource-depleting consumer goods will rise. With a few hair-raising facts, Emmott deftly demonstrates that production is itself consumption: One liter of bottled water requires four liters to produce; a hamburger takes 800 gallons. Whereas technology helped forestall crises in the past, it now uses up the very resources it's designed to preserve. Water desalination, for instance, requires energy intensive and releases many pollutants. Nuclear power would offer short-term hope but remains unpopular. The author sees only "radical behavior change" as a viable solution but does not say how this would work. Emmott's facts are enough to shake steely optimists, though the book's Malthusian pathos could be a bit cloying even for like-minded pessimists. (Sept.)

Review
“A rallying call to arms. . . . Succinct and righteously pessimistic. . . . [with] an indispensible message to galvanize a world in potential crisis.”
    —Kirkus Reviews

Praise from the U.K. for TEN BILLION

“The cumulative effect of [Emmott’s] uncluttered, unadorned prose, buttressed with graphs and illustrations, is significant. . . . A spine-chilling warning of the environmental disaster that awaits the Earth.”
    —The Daily Telegraph (4 stars)

“Powerful. . . . Compelling. . . . The shift in thinking that will be needed if we are to prepare ourselves for living in a different world begins with reading Emmott's indispensable book.”
    --The Guardian

"A stark, simple and short warning about the coming catastrophe, which [Emmott] feels is inevitable, resulting from human overpopulation and over-exploitation of the world’s resources. . . . A valuable contribution to rekindling a discussion on global population that has waxed and waned in the two centuries since Thomas Robert Malthus first brought the issue to public attention."
      --Financial Times

Acclaim for the theater production of TEN BILLION, performed by Stephen Emmott at London's Royal Court Theatre:

"This an hour of Matrix moments, of reminders of what underlies our daily lives. It's freeing to face the facts as well as alarming. . . . It informs, unsettles, provokes. Job done." --The Times (London)

"Professor Emmott argues his case with an implacable logic. He is quiet, humane and deeply concerned and when he says . . . 'I think we're fucked,' you have to believe him." --The Guardian (London)

"A new kind of talk . . . a daring one-man show in which Emmott desperately strives to pull together into one grand and devastating portrait the many ways we are impacting the planet." --New Scientist

Yes we are UP S^*T CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLE.
By Mark Stewart
I too read this book in a single sitting of about one hour. I also have read a few of the reviews posted by other readers. From a pure scientific standpoint I agree professor Emmott could have added more references to back up the facts he has stated. This is always advisable and I am surprised he has not done so. Despite this he has presented the material in a manner that anyone can read and digest. Yes it may be a simple format but I think it's with good reason.

Overall I feel I have to agree with most of what he has said. I am glad someone has finally had the $%lls to come out and state it how it really is ( I think others have previously but perhaps in a more refined manner ). I sense he is very frustrated, gobsmacked and deeply worried by the attitude of big corporations, politicians etc to the threat facing us all. Plus I agree humanity is to blame for the trouble we are in and that we ARE truly F%*KED. I am so relieved someone else agrees with what I have been thinking for years. The fact that the urgency and scope of the problem is STILL not getting across is why I believe he has written the book in the manner that he has.

ALL civilizations have come and gone. I'm convinced ours will join them but how much of the rest of the inhabitants of the earth will we take with us and will there be anything left for life to start again ?

Doomsday Primer
By David Wineberg
Ten Billion is top line summary of where we are in terms of near total destruction of the Earth as we know it. It provides the usual top line stats, some startling photos, and a lot of justifiably pessimistic and realistic potential outcomes. Basically we're doing nothing at all to stop the total wreck of the planet, even though we see it coming, clearly and precisely.

We continue to waste resources at ever more incredible rates. We waste four liters of water to produce a one liter plastic water bottle that we throw away after most of the liter of water inside has been consumed. We waste 800 gallons of water to produce a burger. At the same time, when 40% of arable land is already employed in agriculture, we need to double production by 2050 to accommodate added population.

Even the most optimistic scenarios regarding another green revolution are dependent on climate being stable, but it's anything but as wildfires increase, melting accelerates, hurricanes become larger and fiercer, tornados are gigantic, massive flooding is widespread, etc.

Emmott frames it this way: if we knew an asteroid would hit the Earth on a certain day and wipe out a third of the world, we would mobilize every scientist, bureaucrat, CEO and soldier to deal with it. Well, an equivalent disaster is headed this way, and we aren't just doing nothing about it, we're actively ignoring and denying it.

This will mean wars, as I've been predicting for years. Emmott says every climate conference he goes to these days is attended by the military.

"The biggest most important experiment on Earth is the one we're conducting right now, on Earth itself." And the people conducting it have no idea what they're doing.

Helping Yourself Help Others: A Book for Caregivers, by Rosalynn Carter, Susan K. Golant

The chances are good that every one of us will become a caregiver at some point in our lives. We come to this challenge in the most personal way possible—we want to help someone we love, but we don’t know how, and we’re afraid of losing ourselves in this daunting task. If you have picked up this book, you are probably a caring person. You may prove that every day by helping someone who is elderly or developmentally disabled or who suffers from a physical or mental illness.

It helps to know that Rosalynn Carter, former First Lady and a director of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Human Development, which is committed to studying caregiving issues, knows firsthand the challenges of this labor of love. From her own personal experience as a caregiver for her father and grandfather and from that of hundreds of caregivers she has encountered before, during, and since her years in the White House, Mrs. Carter knows that caregiving can be rewarding, but also lonely, stressful, confusing, and frustrating.

In Helping Yourself Help Others, Mrs. Carter writes, “Caregivers give so much of themselves and sometimes receive very little in return. The purpose of this book is to encourage you, to empathize with you, and to advocate for your special needs. I hope it will help you have an easier and more enjoyable life.”

Mrs. Carter addresses the issues most caregivers face. How do you avoid burnout—the sense of feeling completely overwhelmed and unrewarded? How do you balance your responsibilities as a caregiver with the rest of your life? How can you enlist the aid of other family members? How can you educate yourself about your loved one’s condition and work more effectively with the health care team? When is an institution the right choice for your loved one? How can you access helpful associations, literature and government aid? (A helpful appendix lists hundreds of resources.)

Helping Yourself Help Others is a rare combination of a warmly personal account of caregiving and a reassuring, clear-eyed guidebook that offers practical solutions to caregiver’s typical problems. Filled with empathy, this sensitive, encouraging guide will help you meet a difficult challenge head-on and find fulfillment and empowerment in your caregiving role.

If you are a 'caregiver' it is critical that you find the resources you need for your own personal 'self-care.' Rosalynn Carters book is a must have if you find yourself in the caregiver role. Reaching out, asking questions, asking for help, and maintaining self-care is not a selfish act but important for your own personal well-being as well as the person you care for.

Read this book, it is very helpful.

Learning and Reading Can Be Fun
By Christa L Weddle
This easy chapter book helps kids learn about geography while building reading stamina. The plot is very simple, allowing young readers to focus on following the dialogue through which the story is told. The only thing I would recommend to improve the book is a map of Europe and a map of the world to support comprehension.

Review
Praise for Raising Boys by Design

“Raising Boys by Design is a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable read. It’s marvelously inspiring, well thought out, and academically supported, but it’s also an intuitive guide to raising boys. Every parent, teacher, and grandparent could benefit from this work.”
—Gary Thomas, author of Sacred Marriage and Sacred Parenting

“Blending biblical truth with brain science, Raising Boys by Design is truly a ground-breaking resource that offers much-needed insights for guiding boys toward health and success in every area of life.”
—Tim Clinton, PhD, president of the American Association of Christian Counselors and executive director of the Center for Counseling and Family Studies at Liberty University

“Raising boys in today’s world is no easy task. We need to understand how boys process their emotions and deal with bullying, peer pressure, technology and other important issues—all of which are covered here. This must-read resource helps equip families to raise sons who will be well adjusted and heroes for life.”
—Linda Mintle, PhD, author of Raising Healthy Kids in an Unhealthy World

“We live in a society where it’s dangerous to be a normal, rambunctious, healthy boy. High energy is labeled hyperactive, competitiveness to excel is deemed selfish, and single-mindedness in completion of a task is considered insensitive. Society’s constant attack on normal maleness instills a destructive insecurity and sense of inferiority into countless thousands of otherwise normal healthy men. Raising Boys by Design brilliantly exposes this destructive trend while providing meaningful insights and applicable solutions. If you want to protect your sons from the corrosive effects of today’s world and empower them to become men after God’s own heart, then this book is for you.”
—Timothy R. Jennings, MD, author of The God-Shaped Brain, president-elect of the Tennessee Psychiatric Association, and chairman, board of regents, of the Southern Psychiatric Association

“Raising Boys by Design is a clearly written and helpful book that integrates biblical truth and findings from brain science to enable sons to thrive as they grow up into adulthood.”
—Siang-Yang Tan, PhD, professor of psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary and author of Counseling and Psychotherapy: A Christian Perspective

“I can’t think of two better men to tackle one of the most compelling issues of the twenty-first century: how to raise our sons into Christ-empowered men. Backed by brain-science research, the Bible, personal experience, and a passion to impact boys, Gregg and Michael have created a playbook for Christian parents that will equip them to call their boys to follow Jesus into HEROIC manhood. If you have a son, a grandson, or a significant boy in your life, you will want to have this book by your side as you guide him on his journey to manhood.”
—Tim Wright, pastor of Community of Grace in Peoria, Arizona, and author of Searching for Tom Sawyer: How Parents and Congregations Can Stop the Exodus of Boys from Church

“I wish I’d had this book when my three boys were young. Chapter 2 is worth the cost of the whole book. A must-read for every parent, this even has great material for raising girls!”
—David Stoop, PhD, author and psychologist

Praise for the Work of Michael Gurian

“There is no one who understands the development of boys better than Michael Gurian.”
—William Damon, PhD, professor of education at Stanford University and author of The Moral Child

“Michael Gurian is America’s most passionate advocate for boys.”
—Michael Thompson, PhD, author of It’s a Boy! and co-author of Raising Cain

Introduction

Joining Together to Raise Strong, Loving Christian Sons

Thank you for bringing this book into your family. As we join together to explore with you the best parenting practices based on biblical insights and scientific research, the two of us—one a Bible-based psychologist and the other a science-based marriage and family counselor—draw not only on our more than fifty years of collective research and experience but also on the shared belief that faith and science can and must serve one another, especially where the development of children is concerned.

A Note from Dr. Gregg Jantz

Welcome to this book! I’m so glad to be working with Michael and with you on this very important subject. I had been asked for a number of years if I would consider providing a book for parents who are raising Christian sons. As the father of two sons and a professional who has worked with young males for decades, I wanted to write that book. My research and clinical practice has constantly brought me into the lives of boys and their families, and the wisdom I’ve gained from these young people and families has inspired me to look deeply into the available research on male development in both religious and secular contexts.

As part of that journey, I met Michael—initially through his book The Wonder of Boys and then personally when I attended the Gurian Institute Summer Training Program at the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs. As he presented his findings, I was immediately moved by the fact that his science-based theory coincided in many ways with my own theoretical and clinical work in helping the families of boys and girls. Not too long after our meeting, the two of us became friends and started sharing our perspectives. I soon began considering how I might partner with him to bring our intersecting theories, research, and practical strategies front and center into the Christian world. That Michael is a practicing Jew and a man of deep spiritual commitment helped me to immediately feel comfortable with him.

As the two of us compared notes, I learned that Michael, too, had been asked to write a purposeful resource for Christian parents.

Michael’s Story

I join Gregg in welcoming you into this book and its passionate journey! It is an honor to walk with Gregg and Ann in helping you raise your sons.

Much of my career has been devoted to working with parents, teachers, and organizations to integrate science-based research into their lives. As a clinician and counselor, I’ve also worked hard to help bridge gaps between religion and science. Part of this intention grows from my Christian clients and readers. In my office, in e-mails, or after lectures, they have asked things like, “Can you put together your science- based research with the Bible?” “Would you consider writing a Bible-oriented book for Christian parents?” “Is there a God-given design to males and females?”

The questions I’ve received that relate to Bible-based parenting were not questions I had the expertise to answer, but the concept of “God-given design” is, I believe, a profoundly important concept to consider. In the early 1990s, from a secular perspective, I coined the phrase “nature-based theory” to reflect the fact that gender, personality, talent sets, and many other aspects of human development do indeed possess a “nature” component (we will look in detail at the scientific studies behind this assertion in chapter 2).

Male and female natures (gender) begin in our genetics, before birth, and we carry those natural gender proclivities (what are called, in developmental science, “biological tendencies”) with us throughout our lives. So while each boy and each girl, each woman and each man is influenced significantly by nurture and culture, each gender comes into the world with some profound gender differences in tow.

As I met with Gregg, I heard him using the terms “God-given design” and “parenting with God’s design.” His theories provided a meeting point with nature- based theory and science-based parenting. We realized that the phrase “design-based parenting” integrated our common themes. As we developed this book, we found significant intersections between the Bible and brain science.

Our bridge building between the Bible and science feels to me like not only a powerful and positive resource for parents and others caring for children but also a way for faith-based and secular worlds to work together to deepen our human conversation regarding the lives of our precious children.

Our Team and Your Team

Together, as experts from two different worlds, we are excited to provide this leading-edge resource for Christian parents. Our work is elevated by the behind-the-scenes efforts of our respective teams. We want to thank Ann McMurray, Gregg’s partner at the Center for Counseling and Health Resources, for bringing her gender perspective and expertise to this project, and we want to thank the staff of the Center. We also want to thank the Gurian Institute team in Colorado and elsewhere in the country and give special thanks to Rev. Tim Wright in Peoria, Arizona, for his expertise in matters regarding boys and church life.

Our two teams join us in hoping that the practices in this book will help you gift your son and family with an approach to parenting that brings together the best of the contemporary scientific world with the abiding truths of ancient wisdom.

1: Our Sons Need a New Approach to Boyhood

We live in a culture that has forgotten many crucial aspects of the divine design at work in the body and soul of boyhood.

They come into the world red-faced, sometimes screaming at the top of their lungs. With the joyous pronouncement, “It’s a boy!” our sons are celebrated. Into their tiny bodies we stuff our hopes and dreams as parents. As we gaze at their faces, we see our fathers and mothers, our grandmothers and grandfathers gazing back at us. Though our new son is barely a part of our present, we look at his squirming, warm bundle of future potential and say to ourselves, “Hello, little man.” Little do we know the adventure we are beginning! Our sons grow and change, sometimes before our eyes, and we can barely keep up with their active, inquisitive natures. We seek to mold their wills to our own without breaking that spirit we know they will need in order to become a man.

And we worry what sort of men they will become. Will they be strong enough to shoulder an adult load? Will they be humble enough to learn the lessons we yearn to teach? In a culture where the rules for manhood don’t always align with our values, whose wisdom will they listen to and follow? We watch our sons change and mature. We watch them succeed, and we watch them fail. Knowing they must someday take over their own lives, we wonder how much to intervene. The line between too little help and too much help isn’t always clear to parents of boys today. Our sons must learn to bear the weight of their thoughts and actions, but how much is too much and how soon is too soon?

It’s difficult enough to deal with these questions and doubts when our sons are small and relatively contained under our roofs. When our sons enter preschool and then school, the circle of adults with input and opinions and responsibility over our sons expands. Our choices and decisions and the conduct of our sons come under review. The schoolhouse is just one place where our parenting and the character of our sons can come into question. As you notice your son measuring the world and being measured by it, you may feel that now is the time to fully embrace the complexity of raising boys in this busy, challenging world. Now is the time to take a journey into the divine design of your son.

Boys Need to Know They’re Made in God’s Image

For me (Gregg), schooling is what challenged my family and me to look at the divine design of boys. In grade school and even through middle school, I often found myself bored and unmotivated, trapped in a curricular purgatory of meaningless worksheets and monotone lectures. I (and therefore my parents) would get comments from teachers such as “Gregg is disruptive in class” and “Gregg is not working up to his potential.” After many discipline referrals to the principal, I finally learned to play the game. I was mentored in how to power through the tedium of what I was expected to do so I could finally get to what I wanted to do. And contrary to some of the dire predictions prophesied to my parents and teachers over those early years, I actually did graduate high school and even went on to earn my doctorate.

As I established my career, I thought I had put all of that early anxiety and struggle behind me. Imagine my surprise when many of those feelings came flooding back as my sons began their schooling. Through my sons’ eyes, I realized that not much had changed since I’d been in school. The tipping point toward looking at the design of boys for the sake of my sons came soon after my oldest—my namesake, Gregg-started sixth grade at a new school. One day he reported a weird thing that had caught his attention. At the start of each day, a line of boys paraded up to the teacher’s desk and took some sort of pill. When he relayed this oddity, my heart sank. The only conclusion I could draw was these boys were being medicated, probably with Ritalin or a similar drug, probably for ADD or ADHD.

Not long after we learned this disturbing news, my wife and I were advised by school administrators to consider putting our son on medication as well. Hearing a recitation of what he was like to “deal with” in class was like reading over the comments on my own childhood report cards. Please hear me: As a seasoned counselor, I know that some children absolutely need medication to cope with very real issues. But I also know that medication is being overprescribed; far too many social systems today, while being truly devoted to helping children succeed, simply do not understand the way boys are designed.

Good Info, but Slow Reading
By JG
Since I have 3 boys, ages 6-10, this book got my attention. Of course I want my sons to thrive and "grow into the strong loving men God created them to be." The question is...did this book help me as a mother?

While I can't say that I learned much new, I can say that this book took information that I've heard from various sources and combined them all into one resource. In one book, these authors provide info on how boys develop and think differently than girls, what they need emotionally from mom and dad, important character qualities to encourage, sexuality issues, school performance, technology, rites of passage, and faith. Whew! Each chapter concludes with action steps to take.

The drawback to touching on all these issues, and the authors being a psychologist and a counselor, is that I found the book to be dry. These was an occasional story here and there, but most of the text was slow moving and I had a hard time staying focused and interested.

The one new idea that I really liked is providing the adolescent boy a "rite of passage" which allows him to go on a journey toward manhood and connect with older men as mentors. Tim Wright has developed a curriculum that churches can use to offer this program called Following Jesus: A Heroic Quest for Boys ([...] I would love for my boys to participate in something like this when they are at the right age.

Would I recommend this book? It depends. For someone who doesn't read much and wants an overview of all these topics and how they relate to boys -go for it. There is good info in these chapters. However, if you like to read and would rather read multiple books that are more enjoyable (rather than one that is a bit slower), I would keep searching.

Good Resource for Intentionally Growing Godly Men
By No Ordinary Sparrow
As a mother of three boys, the title of this book immediately appealed to me. Knowing that good things rarely happen by chance, but develop more out of intentional actions, I am interested in any tool available that will help me build good Christian character in my sons. Although the Bible is the best source for this guidance, I also look to professionals who have studied far more than I have, to provide some additional guidance. Initially, I was actually slightly put off by the psychological and scientific presence that this book is based on. I have not previously heard of either of these authors, and as a Christian I am very leery of both of these professions. However, as I read the book, I was reassured over and over that these two authors genuinely seek to build strong men based on Biblical principles, not worldly mandates. Often times the authors made sure to stress that the science behind the way boys tick, lines up with Biblical truths. They even took a firm perspective against some popular secular psychological and scientific beliefs.
I really appreciate the topics that the authors highlight in the book. They covered topics such as differences between boys vs. girls, the importance and difference in maternal and paternal influence, building a HERO, character and self-discipline, emotional health, sexuality, school, technology, Christian manhood, and rites of passage. Thoughtful questions and prompts towards action accompany each chapter.
I can see that this book highlights some of the most important aspects of developing an emotionally healthy, strong, young Christian man. As a stay at home mom who has the most hours of influence raising my boys, that are very different from me, it gives me some guidelines on how I can intentionally influence my sons toward these good goals.
Although the text is a little dry, it is packed with information and is factual and clearly written. It is my opinion that the information within the book is valuable and worth the read.
I can see this book being on my resource shelf for a very long time.
Thank you to Multnomah Press and Blogging For Books for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Raising Boys to Become Men
By Katie M. Reid
This book actually is helping me become a better wife. As I learned about the male brain I began to understand that Hubby is not being a jerk when he doesn't remember all twenty-five things I spew at him in a five minute conversation, but his brain is created to process the world differently. Duh! I have heard this before, but the candid way the authors' drive this point home, helped it sink in. I realize I need to alter my approach and stop expecting Hubby to respond with a female brain. Each gender is created by God's design, differently, and that is a good thing!

My three favorite sections were at the end of the book. These chapters addressed: the male brain and technology, providing a rite of passage into manhood, and how the church needs to improve its approach in connecting with males and their design. The practical content in these chapters alone makes this book worth reading.

Our boys are on a quest, and it is our job to help them emerge a hero..."Boys go and out and do dangerous and high-risk things as part of their hunger and as their attempts of self-maturation. This behavior is driven by their hormones and developmental design, and it's a series of action-oriented ways of saying, 'Look, folks, I'll keep attempting these dangerous (and sometimes downright stupid) rites of passage into power and adulthood until you, my elders, help me grow into adulthood in even more accomplished and thrilling ways'" (Raising Boys by Design, pg. 182).

*I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group in exchange for a honest review.

Amazon.com Review
Best Books of the Month: Middle Grade, September 2013: Mister Max: The Book of Lost Things is an imaginative blend of mystery and adventure, the first of a proposed trilogy. We begin with twelve-year-old Maximilian Sterling's very theatrical parents mysteriously disappearing, leaving him in the care of his grandmother. What follows is not what I expected--a wonderful surprise. While waiting for news of his parents, Max stumbles into detective work that he calls the job of "solutioneer," because sometimes there is more to finding a solution than simply retrieving what has been lost. Max’s theatrical upbringing serves him well, with disguises and personas that are often comical and always exactly what is needed to get the job done. If only he could figure out how to solve his own mystery: the whereabouts of his parents. Mister Max is a thoughtful and beautifully written novel that will reassure the most timid of readers that hidden within themselves is a wealth of courage and untapped possibility. --Seira Wilson

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Admirers of Voigt's "Tillerman" series (S & S) will recognize several plot points in this first volume of a proposed trilogy: a child is seemingly deserted by his parents and survives with the support of his grandmother. But there the similarities end, for this is a mystery-cum-adventure story with a 19th-century feel and an accumulation of improbabilities that build to a satisfyingly melodramatic climax. As Maximilian Starling wends his way around his nameless city trying to find an honest day's work, he stumbles across a series of people with problems, unanswered questions, unsatisfied longings, or vague states of malaise. And then there are the sinister types who seem intent on breaking into Max's house. What are they looking for? Fortunately, Max's parents were theatricals, which gives him both an intimate knowledge of roles to assume while pretending to be old enough for employment and an ample supply of costumes in which to disguise himself. Whether it's finding a good home for a lost dog, facilitating the reunion of disappointed lovers, or recovering a long-lost heirloom, Max displays good sense, a sensitive nature, and winning ingenuity. He resists being labeled a detective and since he merely guides people toward the resolution of their troubles, it's fitting that he calls himself a "solutioneer." By book's end, however, he has not answered his own questions. Readers still don't know what has happened to his parents, for example. This will likely leave them strangely contented, knowing that Voigt has so much more to reveal in the sequels to this comedic page-turner.-Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Library, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
In the early 1900s, 12-year-old Max arrives at the dock to join his parents for a voyage to India only to learn that they have already gone, leaving him a cryptic note. He confides in his grandmother, who encourages him to support himself until their return. After he finds a lost toddler and restores the boy to his mother, her friends hire Max to recover other things they have lost. Though baffled by the mystery of his parents’ disappearance, Max discovers that he has a knack for solving other people’s problems. The measured pace of the writing will not appeal to every reader, but the style suits the story’s period. Voigt takes her time creating multifaceted characters and laying the groundwork for the next two volumes in the Mister Max trilogy, while the novel quietly builds a momentum of its own. The hint of lurking villainy is real, but even stronger is the sense that Max, his grandmother, and his friends will use their individual strengths to set things right. Stay tuned. Perfect for pre-teen kids who love mystery
By Y. Scott
Grown-ups may think the mysteries Max solve in this book are too simple or too easy, but I disagree with it. I thought they are perfect for children between 9 and 13.

In order for young readers to enjoy mysteries, they need to be able to solve problems as the main character does. They need to feel, "I know what happened!", or "I think I can solve it!" as they continue reading. I think Voigt delivered a just right amount of problems and mysteries.

I also loved the way 12 year-old Max transferred himself into different personalities to trick grown-ups. That's also fun for young readers.

I've already recommend this book to a middle school child. I hope she will enjoy it as much as I did.

The Not so Mysterious Mister Max
By J. Wiles Parker
Mister Max: The Book of Lost Things introduces middle grade readers to Max Starling, the son of two theater parents. Almost thirteen, Max has grown up playing bit parts in his parents' plays and generally surrounded by the theater. He loves to paint the sky in watercolor and ride his bicycle. When his parents receive a mysterious invitation to travel to India aboard the Flower of Kashmir, Max thinks it is a silly idea, but off his parents go and Max gets left behind setting off a string of misadventures during which Max must put his theater skills to use as well as make a little money to assure his independence.

The idea of the book is all right, but Max is rather at an awkward age for what happens to him. He seems younger than his almost thirteen at times, but appears older to everyone (except maybe his grandmother and painting instructor who treat him more or less as an adult anyway) throughout the book. The mystery of what happens to his parents is more or less forgotten as Max tries to make money finding lost things (a dog, a spoon, and some missing library periodicals) in order to convince grandma that he can live on his own. It's all rather a convenient way of getting the parents out of the picture, but they're so absent with so little attempt to locate them that it's almost absurd. Max makes some friends including a few adult folk, but they treat him like an adult to the point that it's easy to forget Max is only twelve going on thirteen until he brings it up or interacts with someone his age. Further, his various deceptions are applauded rather than being frowned upon (the dog plot line in particular is loaded with questionable decisions) in such a way that the author almost is saying that purposeful avoidance of the truth is okay.

Anyway, gripes aside, it is a cute idea, but not executed overly well at times in regard to the target age group. There is at least an attempt to set up what is to come as well. This isn't exactly an "I can't wait for the next book" type of read, though. The vocabulary and pacing is somewhat overdone and would frustrate younger readers. Older readers, however, probably wouldn't stick with it for long because of the general lack of consistency in presentation and execution of the mystery elements. The "mysteries" that Max solves are easily solved for the most part (other than that of his parents). Overall, I think it's a lighthearted attempt, but there is so much inconsistency in plotting and characterization that I am unsure what age group it is truly aimed at. Pick up with caution, perhaps.

Promising Premise, but Meandering Execution
By Stephanie Butenhof
I have three boys, ages 8, 8, and 9. I received "Mister Max: The Book of Lost Things" as an Advance Review Copy from NetGalley.
Though my boys are getting older, and can read very well on their own, I love to read aloud, and they love to listen. It's special time that we sit and talk about the characters in the novels we read. While this is wonderful, it also stretches books out into a much longer experience than you would have reading it to yourself. This can be good for discussion, but so hard to do when you just want to know the answer to the mysteries! ;)

Max Starling is the son of two actors/theater owners. Following in his parents' flamboyant footsteps, it is revealed that Max, himself, has great acting chops. The story opens up with Max's parents supposedly being offered temporary positions overseas as acting coaches, but something goes awry, and his parents disappear, with only an oddly-worded note left behind.

This seems like it's going to be the great mystery of the novel, but it is sadly pushed out of the picture for most of the story. Max doesn't act like a 12-year-old. This was brushed off, by basically alluding that his parents were irresponsible, and he often had to fend for himself, even prior to them actually disappearing.
Max tries to prove that he can be independent, by getting odd jobs to support himself. The only type of work he can find, is in finding things for other people. The majority of the story bounces back and forth between the 'cases' that he takes on, as a 'Solutioneer,' while the whole issue of his parents' disappearance is suspiciously absent. Max's Grammie explains it away, by saying that they might as well continue on with their lives, since the only thing they can do is wait until they hear more by way of newspaper or postcards (due to the fact that they're in the early 20th century). I felt that, while this was relevant, it almost came across like they really just didn't care. There were long stretches where the parents' story wasn't mentioned at all.

My boys and I eagerly awaited finding out what on earth had happened to Max's parents, only to find out that it's the first novel in the series, and there is no real resolution to be found at the end. (I had probably known that when I downloaded it, but forgotten by the time we got to the end!)

I also felt that, while the author writes beautiful, imaginative descriptions, they sometimes feel a bit wordy. I would notice that the boys would sometimes lose interest during some of the long descriptions of things that really didn't matter.

The story as a whole, is very imaginative, but the meandering prose, and lack of resolution take it from five stars, to four.
