Deren Einstellungen, kognitive Fähigkeiten, Intelligenz, psychologische Profile und andere Aspekte des Menschen interessieren und beschäftigen die unterschiedlichsten wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen die ihrem Versuchsobjekt nur allzu gerne mit Fragen und Tests zu Leibe rücken. Empirische Arbeit lebt also davon in Experimenten, Befragungen oder Beobachtungen zu messen und zu testen. In vielen Fällen werden heutzutage hochstandardisierte Messinstrumente heran gezogen, die sich in ebenso vielen Einsätzen bereits bewährt haben. Diese Messinstrumente haben gezeigt, dass sie ein profanes Mittel sind um sie in dem Feld zum Einsatz zu bringen, für das sie spezialisiert und geeignet erscheinen.
Methodologie ist eine eigene Wissenschaft und die Gütekriterien der Sozialwis-senschaft ein Teil davon. Erst die Güte einer Messung ermöglicht Aussagen über die Qualität der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit möglich und liefert „Anhaltspunkte für den Wahrheitsgehalt und die Haltbarkeit von Aussagen“. (Lamnek 1995: 153) Es muss daher garantiert sein, dass die Messung objektiv, reliabel und valide ist.
Diese drei Begriffe bilden, wie Diekmann (1995: 216) es ausdrückt, die „zentralen Gütekriterien“. Es ist möglich diese zentralen drei Begriffe in eine Werteskala einzuordnen da sie aufsteigend nach Wert das vorangegangene Kriterium bedingen. Objektivität ist demnach das schwächste Kriterium, es wird keinerlei Vorbedingung vorausgesetzt. Objektivität wird aber zur Bedingung für Reliabilität und beide sind notwendige bzw. zwingende Voraussetzungen für die Validität einer Messung. Von Rangfolge der Gütekriterien wird hier natürlich nur zur Veranschaulichung des Problems gesprochen. Eine Messung oder ein Test, sind erst dann ausreichend akzeptabel, wenn alle Kriterien erfüllt sind.
