Tritt nun angesichts dessen die eigentliche kriminelle Tat der Serie in den Hintergrund? Dient die Kriminalität nur noch als Ausgangspunkt für den sozialkritischen Inhalt, den die Serie im weiteren Verlauf eigentlich vermitteln möchte? Ist das Verbrechen in Anbetracht dessen überhaupt von Realitätsgehalt?
An diesem Konflikt setzt die vorliegende Arbeit an: Sie untersucht den Tatort zum Einen auf seine Umsetzungsweise von Kriminalität. Als Analysegrundlage werden insgesamt vier exemplarische Folgen aus den letzten vier Jahrzehnten herangezogen und auf Darstellungsspezifika bzw. Wirklichkeitstreue hin untersucht.
Zum Anderen geht die Arbeit auf Grundlage einer umfangreichen Themenanalyse der Frage nach, inwieweit der Tatort „den Zustand des Landes“ jedes Jahrzehnts widerspiegelt. Zur Ratifizierung dienen dabei Inhaltsangaben von 530 Folgen Tatort, anhand derer die Themen der einzelnen Jahrzehnte untersucht werden.
Zunächst sollen aber die theoretischen Grundlagen aufgezeigt werden. Dabei wird mit Zugang zum Bereich der Mediensoziologie deutlich, dass das bearbeitete Thema durchaus als Gegenstand der Kultursoziologie behandelt werden kann. Zudem werden ausgewählte Theorien zur Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit im Film und zur Mediennutzung dargelegt, bevor der Forschungsstand zu den Themen Krimi und Tatort ausgewertet wird. Danach dient eine Analyse des Fernsehprogramms als Grundlage zur Veranschaulichung der Faszination, die von Serien und von Krimis im
