A Great Start to a Great Commentary Series

The Story of God Bible Commentary Series is one of the few commentaries that I have found myself truly excited about, and Scot McKnight's "Sermon on the Mount" does not disappoint. It provides an excellent start to the series.
Here are a few of my observations about this volume.
- Sermon on the Mount is non-academic, yet engages historical and contemporary theology. All technical terms are defined in the text. McKnight writes with clarity and fluidity, keeping the reader focused and interested.
- The footnotes are generous but not overwhelming. You'll find no Barthian excursus here.
- I would call McKnight's perspective "open-minded evangelical." He does not simply parrot the current American standard evangelical ideology or regurgitate the most popular evangelical theologians, but rather engages the narrative of the text in concert with a wide array of scholarship from fellow Jesus-followers who hold theological and cultural convictions from across the spectrum. This gives the book a fresh and yet time-tested flavor.
- McKnight rightly sees The Sermon as theology in narrative. The Sermon is the story of the Kingdom and the ethics of that Kingdom.
- The author approaches The Sermon by simply believing that Jesus meant what he said. Thus, all approaches which attempt to teach that The Sermon is not applicable to us today come up short. "These common approaches," he writes, "fail the words of Jesus because in the Sermon Jesus calls his followers to do what he teaches." It all boils down to a haunting question as from the lips of Jesus himself: "Will you follow me?"
- Each chapter of the commentary is divided into three sections:
1. "Listen to the Story." This is the text itself, the context thereof, and an eye-opening introduction.
2. "Explain the Story." This is the body of the commentary itself. McKnight is insightful and challenging.
3. "Live the Story." This is the practical application of the text.
In this commentary, Scot McKnight confronts us with Jesus himself, then challenges us to follow Him, and finally encourages us in the Way. I highly recommend this commentary and look forward to reading the next volume in the series.

Focused Commentary on Jesus' Sermon

First, I find the decision to do a commentary only on the Sermon on the Mount interesting. There is a forthcoming volume in the series on Matthew--one might assume that the author of that volume will also present some information on the Sermon on the Mount. Still, I like the idea.
Second, I like the less technical aspect of this commentary. It bodes well for the series, but I haven't seen another volume so I can't assure you of consistency. The presentation here is about understanding the text for practical application. That's an excellent viewpoint for a commentary. There is plenty of academic depth--addresses authorship issues, dating, etc., but focuses on the "Why bother?" of the text.
Third, McKnight's emphasis is that the Sermon on the Mount is not to be explained away as impossible but understood and done by the disciple of Jesus. He acknowledges the danger of thinking this will lead to salvation, which is by grace alone, but expresses that we cannot decouple obedience from our lives. It's a good emphasis, and he threads that needle well.
Fourth, McKnight references many other works on the Sermon on the Mount. Through this, he illustrates other views and broadens the reader's understanding. This helps the commentary exceed other works on the Sermon that only present one view.
Fifth, it's a hardcover book. What can I say? If you're working through the Sermon on the Mount, you are going to be in this book a lot, and it needs to hold up.
Being from Zondervan, the included text is the NIV. I'm a bigger fan of other translations, but that's the way it goes.
Also, McKnight is to be commended for his use of FOOTNOTES! instead of the dreaded endnotes. While I was inclined to give this work 4 stars for being a good reference work alongside others, I feel compelled to up it to 5 because of my personal bias against endnotes and desire to reward those who avoid them.
All-in-all, The Sermon on the Mount volume of the Story of God Commentary series is worth having on hand. I look forward to peeking at other volumes in the years to come.

Promising New Commentary Series

Scot McKnight is professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary in Lombard, Illinois. Previously, he taught at North Park University. He is no stranger to commentaries, having previously written on Galatians, 1 Peter, and James.
Here, he offering readers the inaugural volume in Zondervan’s new The Story of God Bible Commentaries. He serves as one of the general editors alongside Tremper Longman III. The purpose of this commentary series is to address this particular generation with the Word of God. Based on the NIV 2011, this series is asking authors to “explain what the Bible says to the sorts of readers who pick up commentaries so they can understand not only what Scripture says but what it means for today” (xii-xiii).
The name of the series comes from the fact that the editors want authors to “explain each passage of the Bible in light of the Bible’s grand Story.” This of course “connects this series to the classic expression regula fidei, the ‘rule of faith,’ which was the Bible’s story coming to fulfillment in Jesus as the Messiah, Lord, and Savior of all” (xiii).
To accomplish this, each passage is examined from three angles:
Listen to The Story (cites the text and lists a selection of important biblical and sometimes noncanonical parallels)
Explain The Story (the actual commentary proper, limited footnotes, but covering backgrounds, historical context, cultural codes, and theological interpretations)
Live The Story (directions for how the text might be lived out today, not necessarily applications though)
As you can see, this is similar to the three fold approach of the NIV Application Commentary, but ever so slightly different. I’d say the main difference is that overall the volume more compact and to the point. I haven’t seen the Philippians volume that was also released at the same time, but I’d imagine it’s a bit slimmer than the corresponding NIVAC volume (there isn’t a corresponding one for the Sermon on The Mount).
As for McKnight’s volume specifically, I’ve found it helpful so far. I’m reading it alongside John Stott’s in The Bible Speaks Today and Kent Hughes’ in Preaching The Word. Of the three, McKnight’s and Stott’s most like a typical commentary, while Hughes’ is a series of sermons. McKnight and Stott are fairly closely aligned in their overall aims, so if you are familiar with Stott’s volume, you have an idea about what McKnight’s is like (though also insert your knowledge of McKnight’s differing theological emphases to complete the picture).
McKnight opens with an introduction to ethics, which then situates the Sermon on The Mount into that discussion. He closes with a list of key resources before launching into the commentary proper. He breaks the text of Matthew 5-7 into manageable portions (chapters range from 10-30 pages). He follows the outline mentioned above, and as promised, footnotes are kept to a minimum and discussion stays on the kind of track the average reader will stick with.
Though more could be said, from what I’ve read so far, and from what I know of McKnight, I can say this volume definitely belongs on your shelf if you’re planning to work through the Sermon on The Mount anytime soon. Obviously this isn’t the last word on the Sermon, but McKnight makes for a great conversation partner, and this particular commentary series looks very promising. I’m looking forward to seeing future volumes, especially the ones coming for the Old Testament (and if you remember yesterday’s review, Andrew Shead is the author of the Jeremiah/Lamentations volume). For now though I’ll keep reading through McKnight’s volume and getting a better grasp on the Sermon on The Mount. If that’s what you’re interested in, you would do well to give this series, and McKnight’s volume in particular, a shot.
