Death Zones and Darling Spies: Seven Years of Vietnam War Reporting (Studies in War, Society, and the Militar), by Beverly Deepe Keever

Chosen for 2015 One Book One Nebraska

In 1961, equipped with a master’s degree from famed Columbia Journalism School and letters of introduction to Associated Press bureau chiefs in Asia, twenty-six-year-old Beverly Deepe set off on a trip around the world. Allotting just two weeks to South Vietnam, she was still there seven years later, having then earned the distinction of being the longest-serving American correspondent covering the Vietnam War and garnering a Pulitzer Prize nomination.

In Death Zones and Darling Spies, Beverly Deepe Keever describes what it was like for a farm girl from Nebraska to find herself halfway around the world, trying to make sense of one of the nation’s bloodiest and bitterest wars. She arrived in Saigon as Vietnam’s war entered a new phase and American helicopter units and provincial advisers were unpacking. She tells of traveling from her Saigon apartment to jungles where Wild West–styled forts first dotted Vietnam’s borders and where, seven years later, they fell like dominoes from communist-led attacks. In 1965 she braved elephant grass with American combat units armed with unparalleled technology to observe their valor—and their inability to distinguish friendly farmers from hide-and-seek guerrillas.

Keever’s trove of tissue-thin memos to editors, along with published and unpublished dispatches for New York and London media, provide the reader with you-are-there descriptions of Buddhist demonstrations and turning-point coups as well as phony ones. Two Vietnamese interpreters, self-described as “darling spies,” helped her decode Vietnam’s shadow world and subterranean war. These memoirs, at once personal and panoramic, chronicle the horrors of war and a rise and decline of American power and prestige.

Review
"In this powerfully plainspoken account, one of the leading female journalists of the Vietnam War relays her personal experience of the bloody conflict that divided America and changed the global political landscape. . . . Whether reporting from the ditches of the siege of Khe Sanh, detailing the harried arrival of U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge, or fondly recalling her friendship with Pham Xuan An (one of the eponymous "darling spies"), Keever provides a ground-level look—by turns shrewd, lucid, and humane—of the war in Vietnam."—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly 2013-03-08)

"Beverly Deepe Keever is a brilliant journalist, and her book is both a personal journal and a journalist's personal perspective on a long war."—Foreword Reviews (Foreword Reviews)

"These memoirs, at once personal and panoramic, chronicle the horrors of war and a rise and decline of American power and prestige."—Bob Edmonds, McCormick Messenger (Bob Edmonds McCormick Messenger 2013-05-30)

"Keever is an excellent storyteller. . . . Death Zones & Darling Spies adds a woman's view to the many retrospectives on the Vietnam War—a war covered and perpetrated mostly by men."—Carolyn Johnsen, Lincoln Journal Star (Carolyn Johnsen Lincoln Journal Star 2013-07-21)

A courageous and able female reporter in Vietnam
By Oliver Lee
Beverly Keever was a hard-working and resourceful reporter in Vietnam for the amazing duration of seven years.
Under her maiden name of Beverly Deepe, she reported assiduously for the New York Herald Tribune and then for the Christian Science Monitor. The latter so appreciated her work that it nominated her for the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting.
Born in 1935 on a Nebraska farm during the Great Depression, Beverly got her college education on a scholarship at the University of Nebraska, then attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
At age 26 she set out on a trip around the world in 1962. Though she had planned to spend only two weeks in Vietnam, she landed in Saigon at a time of political turmoil, potential military coups, a Communist-led insurgency, and the arrival of thousands of U.S. military adviser to the South Vietnamese Army. Her journalistic training kicked in, and she got busy interviewing peasants, South Vietnamese officials, and American officers and soldiers.
She was a straight-shooter who saw through the futility of the American war early on and reported accordingly. Thus, for example, she reported in 1962 about the eviction of peasants from their villages in Bin Duong Province, the burning of their villages, and the creation of "death zones", meaning that any peasants remaining would be presumed to be Communist sympathisers and would be shot on sight. No wonder she was the only resident reporter excluded from background briefings at the U.S. Embassy. But she was able to develop her own sources, leading to some important scoops, one of which was so hot, so damning of Richard Nixon's dealings with South Vietnam's President, that her editor in Boston watered it down greatly before publishing it. A Must-Read!!
By J. Young
Meticulously written and well-documented, "Death Zones & Darling Spies" tells of the author's amazingly checkered journalistic experience during the key years in Vietnam from 1961-1969. Having not only a master's in journalism but in library science as well, Beverly Deepe Keever systematically saved original notes and archives from her war correspondent days in Vietnam in order to recreate her journey from a Nebraska farm girl to a globetrotting reporter sitting on a possibly explosive election scoop in which candidate Richard Nixon influenced President Nguyen Van Thieu to reject President Lyndon Johnson's peace initiative in 1968, thereby causing the conflict to continue on until 1975. LBJ knew of Keever's lead for the Christian Science Monitor and had agonized over whether to release news about Nixon's "treason."

Also serving as over 50 years of memoirs and reflections on war and peace, the book sets the author's involvement in Vietnam in a modern framework, with hindsight comments showing the significance of historical events, incorporating, in the author's words, "horizontal, on-the-ground reporting" as well as "vertical," high-level policymakers' decisions that were once secret but now revealed.

Compellingly written and engrossing, this is a must-read for any student of journalism, history or Vietnam.

Death Zones & Darling Spies
By Christine Kohler
Journalist Beverly Deepe Keever reported on the Vietnam war for seven years. During that time she interviewed peasants to North Vietnam's (many) presidents to Viet Cong. By having waited all these decades to write about her experiences, the author has added the depth of further revelations, such as the releasing of the Pentegon Papers and former Pres. Johnson's files. As a result, this book is not just the recounting of a female journalist's memoir, but a book worth studying by every politician, military war college faculty and student, and Vietnam historian. DEATH ZONES & DARLING SPIES is a riveting and revealing read!
