Remnants: Season of Wonder, by Lisa Tawn Bergren

Our coming was foretold by the elders— Those who would change the future, just as the planet teetered on the edge of darkness.

Born on the prophesied day with birthmarks in the form of a crescent moon, they knew us immediately. Swaddled and screaming, we were spirited away by those who hid us, trained us, and kept us safe until our time came.

They poured their lives into us. Some died to save us.

And now we, the Remnants, protected by Knights of the Last Order, have gathered.

Called until we breathe our last … to save the world.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—This fantasy is set in a distant and barely recognizable future, in which faith is a dangerous thing to have. A prophecy foretold the coming of the Ailith, or the Remnants—believers with special abilities sent to help the faithful fight against the demonic forces that plague humanity. The story begins as protagonist Andriana, one of gifted teens born on the seventh day of the seventh month, begins her first assignment as a Remnant. Complete with adventure, danger, swordplay, and even a little romance, this action-packed series opener told from a first-person point of view will engage young fantasy and dystopian fans. While the characters and world-building could have used a little more development and expansion, readers will be caught up in the suspense, especially as the truly scary villains chase after the superpowered Remants on their journey. A solid purchase for libraries where fantasy is popular.—Sarah Jones, Clinton-Macomb Public Library, MI

Review
Remnants: Season of Wonder opens years after the world has been ravaged by war and disease. Modern conveniences are a luxury, and, tragically, acknowledgement of the Maker is a crime. It is into this world that a special group of children, called “Ailith,” are born. The Maker gives the Ailith children a special birthmark as well as gifts that will be used to deliver mankind from the oppression that has overtaken them. Each Ailith has a bodyguard, and they spend their whole life training for the day when the Maker will call them to fulfill their duties. Andriana is Ailith, and Remnants is her story. It is the story of her missions with the other Ailith, her relationship with her bodyguard Ronan whom she loves, and her expanding knowledge of her Maker. This dystopian fantasy by Lisa T. Bergren is the first in a trilogy about the Ailith fulfilling a prophecy given long ago by the elders. Bergren is a master storywriter who can not only pack the plot with action, but also create well-developed characters. The characters face trials faced by many teens, including forbidden relationships. Andriana and Ronan were told in the beginning of their training that they were never to love each other as more than siblings, but over time, their feelings for each other have grown. Throughout the book, they develop their special gifts and learn to trust the Maker and follow his guidance. In addition to that, they learn they must also lean on the Maker to check their feelings for each other, though they do not always remember to do so as the temptation to kiss and express their feelings for each other grows. There is one use of mild language. Though the times of this book are bleak, there is hope that the Maker has not forgotten, has a plan, and is working all things together for good. Kristina Wolcott, CLJ (Christian Library Journal)

Looking Forward to the Next One!
By Remaininhislove
As a lover of YA fantasy/dystopian novels, I have discovered that there are two ways in which a brand new series can start: one in medias res (or in the middle of things) and the other as world-building. I would classify this novel as world-building. It's essentially a new world with a new way of life, and new groups of people, and much of the novel is Andriana coming into contact with different things and people. That is not to say that this novel was not fascinating (I'm very much looking forward to book two!)! Here's what I noticed:

What I liked:

The world building was done fabulously. In no way, did I feel like the story stopped to explain things. Instead we got to experience and see things through the mostly sheltered eyes of Andriana. And what a world we encountered. It was both modern with the fantastical elements and medieval in the ways that people thought. It's a great world to be in and I was extremely disappointed that every page I turned meant that I was closer to the end. I will say that it wasn't always edge-of-your-seat exciting, but the writing was done so nicely, I still didn't want to put the book down.

Andriana is great heroine. I never got annoyed with her, and that's good because we're in her head the whole novel. I liked the way she thought about things. I liked the way she reacted to things, and I liked the way she dealt with things. I also liked the idea of the romance in this. There's actually a legit reason why they aren't supposed to be together and that adds a lovely tension to the novel.

I also like the epic-like feel to the novel. I don't feel like I'm being short-changed or that the author is rushing. There's a lot going on it, but I was never lost. Furthermore, I like the whole idea of this special group of people who have amazing gifts. I'm very excited to see what happens next.

Spiritually, there are a couple of principles here, but the one that stuck out in my mind is the importance of closing the door to darkness. Otherwise it will take a foothold and take you places you never wanted to go.

What I didn't like:

My biggest critique would be Ronan. I liked Ronan. I just wished Ronan got a chance to speak more. Every time he spoke, it was like time froze for me. But there's a huge amount of the novel where he is just this silent presence and while I knew Andriana's history with Ronan, I felt like I didn't know Ronan. And he seems like a great person to know. Let's face it, the whole point of having a great hero is so that we readers can fall just a little bit in love with him ourselves. So, here's to hoping that book two has lots more of Ronan!

Romantic scale: 7.5

Overall, I really enjoyed Remnants. It was such a treat to read and I'm looking forward to the next one!

I received a copy of “Remnants: Season of Wonder” as part of Lisa’s Remnants Street Team. I’m a fan of Lisa’s stories. I absolutely LOVED her River of Time series so I was excited to read her newest book. This is definitely NOT a story you’ve read before. It’s a dystopian world with a Christian message at the forefront. I loved the character names Lisa came up with, very original. I really liked Ronan and Dri’s relationship, although I do wish there would have been more than there was. I was waiting for them to acknowledge their feelings and they would get so close and then pull away, very frustrating. I wasn’t able to really get into the story as much as Lisa’s others. I know it is a dystopian story but to me, it felt more like a fantasy. The story itself dragged on in certain areas and I found myself skimming more than reading. The action scenes and the scenes containing just Ronan and Dri are the ones that really got my attention but the rest just passed by in a blur. I give “Remnants: Season of Wonder” 3/5 stars. It’s a good read and not your average dystopian story. The ending definitely had my attention but that’s again because it was basically just Ronan and Dri. It simply didn’t grab my attention in that ‘can’t put it down’ way.

nice idea but...
By Irene
The book seemed to have promise, I like reading about post-apocalyptic worlds, but it was to much. It was hard to finish I grew tired of the religious aspects the writer used. Tired of "praise the Maker" or "the maker has a plan for all." Which is fine a few times but all the time? And a character started seeing angels and demons or the equivalent in this book. I was wondering why this book was not classified under religious sci-fi. The idea of a group going on a quest to save their land is why I wanted to read this book, it was just polluted with a bunch of stuff that could have been left out.
