About the Author
Yung Suk Kim is Associate Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, Virginia Union University, in Richmond, Virginia. He is the author of several books: "Christ's Body in Corinth: The Politics of a Metaphor" (2008); "A Theological Introduction to Paul's Letters: Exploring a Threefold Theology of Paul" (2011); "Biblical Interpretation: Theory, Process, and Criteria" (2013); "A Transformative Reading of the Bible: Explorations of Holistic Human Transformation" (2013); "Truth, Testimony, and Transformation: A New Reading of the "I Am" Sayings of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel." He is the editor of the Journal of Bible and Human Transformation.

Vari i temi trattati in questo lavoro: epidemie e malattie, cultura e medicina a Noto nell’Ottocento; biografia e analisi delle opere dei più importanti medici netini del diciannovesimo secolo, quali Angelo Cavarra, Antonio Sofia, Giuseppe Conforti, Francesco Conforti e Carmelo Melfi; contatti e rapporti di queste personalità con illustri medici d’oltralpe: François Magendie, Guillaume Dupuytren, Alfred-Armand Velpeau, Armand Trousseau, Theodor Billroth, per non citarne che alcuni.
Rilevante l’analisi dell’opera di Angelo Cavarra Des maladies de la femme, per la prima volta tradotta in italiano, dove è evidente come questo medico netino, sottolineando la dipendenza di diverse malattie organiche da fenomeni esclusivamente psicologici, si pone su quella scia che porterà, con Freud nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento, alla nascita della psicoanalisi.
Univoca la conclusione del libro: “… abbiamo messo in luce i rapporti tra la cultura scientifica siciliana, in particolar modo medica, e quella europea e ci siamo soffermati sull’attività e le opere di quei medici che sono stati protagonisti del serrato dialogo culturale con l’Europa. Ne è scaturito che, non solo, la cultura scientifica e razionalista siciliana, sin da quando è stata introdotta dagli Arabi, non è stata mai isolata da quella nazionale ed europea, ma che ha contribuito, non poco, con le sue idee e le sue innovazioni, allo sviluppo scientifico d’oltralpe. Inoltre, gli studi e le ricerche sull’argomento ci hanno fornito un quadro abbastanza chiaro sul suo ruolo di vera e propria avanguardia troppo spesso dimenticato. Infine, la lunga riflessione, maturata sul passato siciliano, ci ha consentito di sottolineare che solo una conoscenza sempre più approfondita e chiara delle nostre origini, radici e tradizioni, fatta con impegno ed interesse, può portare alla luce quelle testimonianze vive e palpitanti dei secoli scorsi, che negligenza, sciatteria e trascuratezza fino ad oggi non hanno permesso di trasmettere ai posteri”.

Recipes in promotion not present

This is a facsimile reproduction of the original 1772 first American (Boston) printing. It does include the Paul Revere engravings. However, the promotional description is incorrect regarding the inclusion of recipes for: Baked Indian Pudding, Peach Sweetmeats, Maple Beer, Method of Destroying the Putrid Smell which Meat Acquires during Hot Weather, and Spruce Beer out of Shed Spruce. These recipes are not present in this edition - they were not included until the 1803 edition. Amelia Simmon's, author of the 1796 "American Cookery" does include recipes for Indian Pudding, Maple Beer - as well as many other significant first recipes, the first cookbook written by an American and published in the newly formed United States, and she was influenced by the publication of this cookbook, using some of its recipes. I give this a 4-star rating because the promotion is wrong and mis-leading. It is an important historical cookbook and many accolades to the publisher and American Antiquarian Society for making it available.

About the Author

With a prestigious lineage including familial ties to Pocahontas and Thomas Jefferson, Mrs. Mary Randolph lived the later part of her life in Richmond where she ran a boarding house with her husband. Mrs. Mary became so well known for her cooking that during the Revolutionary War it was rumored that her life was spared by virtue of her cooking ability. Mrs. Mary passed away in 1828 and was the first person to be buried at what would become Arlington National Cemetery.

I bought this book as a gift for a young woman who just moved, with her husband, to Virginia from Arizona. I figured she needed some history and some recipes from the area. Being a Southerner myself. I enjoyed peeking through the book, too.

Great resource for anyone who wants to learn about Databases

I bought the kindle version and its great. I had never done or used a database program before and now with my business growing, I am really finding the value and necessity to create and manage a database.

In the kindle version, I wish that the images in the examples could be enlarged or more clear. Reading any of the pics is really impossible. Luckily, the instructions are pretty clear.

It seemed to emphasize differences between Access 2013 with previous versions. As an absolute beginner I was hoping for something more basic. It felt as though I was being given information without the background structure to hang it on. I found better, more helpful information on the web.

The book was great, but after gaining some experience building Access databases, it was a little too basic. If you are completely new to Access it will be good for you, but if you have experience with the program you may find that it explains things you already know.

A must read

This is an excellent book, I particularly enjoyed the historical context as sketched by the author throughout the book. I could not put the book down and the story lingered in my thoughts long afterwards. It is a book about a girl who grew up poor, but through sheer determination and a dose of good genes was able to overcome the odds serving as an inspiration to the reader. The book tells the story of personal resilience, the unfortunate history of a country and even a love story in between. I can recommend this book to anyone, but if you are a South African it will have special meaning to you.

I enjoyed the book, could almost not put it down. The political background to everyday events in the SA in the late forties and further, kept me to the kindle. The emotional side of the character was heart touching, I wonder how many children grew up in those years and understood what it could be to sleep without food. The style of writing kept me wondering and I was definately never bored!
Five stars to Irma Joubert fot excellent work!

Skittereinde karakter ontwikkeling, skitterende navorsing vir die historiese gebeure en 'n effens verassende einde (m.a.w. mens kon nooit eintlik die einde voorspel soos dit 'n baie stories gebeur nie).

Die verteltrant is boeiend en ek kon nie die boek neersit totdat die einde. Ek beveel dit met vrymoedigheid aan.

About the Author

Rickie Solinger is a historian and curator. She has written and edited a number of books about reproductive politics, including Wake Up Little Susie: Single Pregnancy and Race before Roe v. Wade and Beggars and Choosers: How the Politics of Choice Shapes Adoption, Abortion, and Welfare in the U.S. Solinger has organized exhibitions that have traveled to 140 college and university galleries over the past eighteen years. She lives in the Hudson Valley and New York City.

First-Rate Guide to Controversial Subjects

This is a first-rate, indispensable, fact-filled, concise guide to the state of reproductive rights and health today. In carefully neutral language, Solinger lays out the major issues and controversies around abortion, birth control, pregnancy, childbirth, assisted reproductive technology, immigration and overpopulation (or, if you prefer, "overpopulation"), public support for low income mothers and children, disability and more.
As a historian, Solinger is particularly interested in the way class and race affect the way Americans think about motherhood. For whom is motherhood a crucial aspect of feminine dignity, and for whom is motherhood proof of laziness and depravity? Who gets to have a child and raise that child? Which children are socially valued? The answers have changed over time--single white teenagers, who used to be virtually forced to surrender their babies for adoption, face much less stigma now and mostly keep their babies--but still favor whites over blacks and Latinas, the married over the unmarried, the straight over the LGBT, the healthy over the disabled, and of course, the well-off over the poor.
Solinger charts the way "choice" language has replaced rights" language, permitting the denial of social support to women, whether they seek to terminate a pregnancy or have a baby: Why should "the taxpayer" help a woman pay for her choice? Interestingly, other Western industrialized countries don't see it that way: birth control and abortion are underwritten by the state, and low-income mothers and children get far more help than they do here.

A must for anyone who needs to be up-to-date on this issues: writers, students, academics, journalists.

Impressively comprehensive narrative

This book divides each of its short chapters into still shorter entries on different questions, from "What is the link between citizenship and reproductive politics?" to "Why did Susan B. Anthony oppose abortion?" In that sense, it's almost as much a mini-encyclopedia as a regular book. You can dip in anywhere and not feel disoriented. That said, the short sections on discrete topics ultimately produce an impressively comprehensive narrative, weaving together many important threads, including class, race, sexuality, religion, and history. Chock full of useful facts, this accessible and readable book would be a great text for college classes, journalists, or just concerned citizens - ie, for anybody who wants to be brought up to speed quickly and easily (but not shallowly) on the central reproductive issues in the US today.

The book is an outstanding source of information about how this issue has been handled over time. As a women, I am appalled to have it confirmed that women have no reproductive rights.
