Brian Haggard’s book delivers exactly what it promises, detailing precisely how to 'capture your treasured moments with creative embroidery.'

A clever blend of inspirational pictures of finished items is combined with a generous array of trace-off designs including two beautiful alphabets, enabling you to produce truly personalized items with ease.

The gallery section is spectacular in scope and style. My particular favourite is an elegant wing chair immaculately upholstered in cream linen. The central vertical panel makes a perfect backdrop for photographs of the author’s grandmothers. Beautifully rendered in sepia, their images are accompanied by embroidered names, dates, sentimental items and other memorabilia. This work of art offers stitchers a wonderful way of incorporating this sort of embroidery into a room which really can’t absorb another cushion, quilt or picture! (Stitch, August/September 2014)

Brian Haggard learned how to quilt from his grandmother when he was a young boy. He enjoys crazy quilting, embroidery, dollmaking, and interior design. He stitches together his altered art quilts in Indianapolis, Indiana.

An Elegant and Exquisite Encore

I had a mild craft-lover's panic attack while leafing through my newly arrived copy of Embroidered Memories by Brian Haggard. After scanning past the promising first 20 pages, I reached an alarmingly long section of black and white (technically more like sepia and cream) drawings of designs, lovely but barren of text, color, and the mixed stitchery media pieces that make me pine and swoon like I do over a freshly unsealed pint of Haagen-Dazs Caramel Cone ice cream.

Would Embroidered Memories be the "end" of my love affair with Brian Haggard, who first lit my heart with his Crazy-Quilted Memories: Beautiful Embroidery Brings Your Family Portraits to Life? Was he really going to tease me and leave me bereft, holding just another design book in which the last two thirds would be given over to (gasp) ... drawings??

And then I reached the last section of Embroidered Memories, a redeeming 19 pages of Brian Haggard's gallery selections. Crazy beautiful stitch, texture, and fabric montages brimming with buttons, borders, shades of old gold, raggedy spider webbed edging, an embellished linen jacket, the requisite tote, the surprisingly inspired back of a wing chair, a stitched-to-the-nines mannequin, and a similar marionette. My favorite item is the exemplary "Playful Pixies", a crazy quilt-lette packed with every quintessential attribute that embodies the crazy memory quilt.

The initial section of the book contains a warm, friendly background on the author, who reveals himself to be caring, grateful, and committed to keeping hand stitching alive in these times of sewing super-machines and embroidery mega-computers. 40 pages of design drawings follow; this section begins with tips on using Wash-Away Stitch Stabilizer sheets which are used with a printer. (Available on Amazon: Wash-Away Applique Sheets: Printable; Water Soluble; Single Sided; Fusible; Eco-Friendly) You'll find nicely balanced and intricate yet doable designs from which you will design your own pieces.

It's important to note two additional things about this book:

1) Unlike Haggard's earlier book, this is NOT a project-based how-to book. It's a "look what you can do" guide, and a very good one at that.

2) About copywrites: Haggard and C&T Publishing grant permission to photocopy any of these designs as long as they are not used for your own personal financial gain or any other commercial monetary profit. This includes craft sales, of course.

Lovely and buy-worthy.

Not Quite What I Expected

I also ordered Brian's Crazy Quilted Memories after checking it our from the local library and enjoying it. There are so many examples in that book to inspire and admire. However this book is predominantly embroidery designs, many of which could easily be free-handed without the patterns, and very few photos of actual completed projects.

That being said, I love Brian's approach to memory quilts and embroidery and his color sense. And as he says in the book, the designs are good "jumping-off points for your own designs.

Not a project book

I so loved and still enjoy his first book that I just automatically purchased this one (his newest) with out taking the time to read or realize that this is NOT a how to/project book. It's embroidery designs. Nice, but I purchased many of these kinds of books years ago which I still have. I saw the preview pictures of the bags which are featured in it and wanted to do those projects. They are models for the Embroidery....which is lovely....but....darn me for not taking the time to realize this is NOT a project book.
This book will be a welcomed gift to a friend who does not have any other embroidery designs books. That's why it still gets a 5 star rating from me, because it is still a VERY nice book...just not what I thought or was hopping for.

Easy for children to understand

My thoughts:
This would make a great addition to your home or church library. For myself, Esther is not one of the stories I remember well from my childhood Sunday School classes. This book will help children be familiar with this wonderful story of God's plan and protection of His people.

The illustrations are colorful and characters are cartoon figures. The book is not too long so it will hold the attention of young listeners. I liked the way the text was worded in a way children could understand something bad was happening, but it wasn't presented in a way that would be scary to young readers.

Born in 1976, Aaron Michael Morales grew up in Tucson. Morales's sometimes powerful but disappointing debut portrays Tucson as a crumbling city teetering on the edge of disaster, where violence triumphs over every character and even the most hopeful of circumstances. The streets are run by the Latin Kings gang; their fates, like nearly all of Morales's characters, are sealed at birth. Among the expansive milieu, there's Jaime, a straitlaced teenager seeking revenge for the murder of his boyfriend; Mr. Gutierrez, a kindhearted old man overwhelmed with grief; Peanut, a gang member who wants a better life for his younger sister; and the women of Tucson, who seem to have little choice outside of becoming rape victims or prostitutes. Unfortunately, Morales's willingness to fall into scenes of graphic violence—not only to drive his point home, but for shock value and, often, to stand in for more original or artful prose—becomes woefully predictable. For a novel that wishes so earnestly for a better future for its downtrodden characters, it does everything in its power to obliterate those hopes in the reader. (May)

In this vividly rendered novel-in-stories, Morales depicts desperate people trapped by poverty and circumstance. Set in the rough neighborhoods of Tucson during the late 1980s, the stories feature gang members, prostitutes, a closeted army officer, and an abused young wife and mother, among others. The neighborhood playground, Reid Park, is the site of a murderous Easter egg hunt and a hypocritical preacher’s cynical show at turning gang members into Christians. Explosive violence is always a possibility, and Morales writes such visceral descriptions of gang beat-downs that some chapters are difficult to read. In perhaps the most affecting story, “Rainbow,” a young prostitute, abandoned at age 15 by her mother, returns to the underground drainage tunnnels where she first stayed, under the protection of a homeless Vietnam vet, when she was forced to live on the streets. Now, however, the tunnels are considered the territory of the Latin Kings, and her fate at their hands is as heartbreaking as it is frightening. Dark, True and Important

This book is full of darkness, full of truths, full of scenarios that most people who migrate to Tucson do not know about or understand. In his writing Charles Bowden disclosed the underbelly...the gangs, the old Miracle Mile, the tunnels, the homeless, the drugs and Morales follows through which a writing style that screams of immediacy. No Pollyanna attitudes here. Not always easy to digest, the stories are important and I am grateful for his having written this book.

Morales understands the Underworld, that class of humanity that has never had a hope in this otherwise civilized world. A bleak, dark book which through the eyes of a different person in each chapter an incredibly destructive lifestyle is exposed. If only this book was complete fiction, but horribly every story in Drowning Tucson has a living version being created in fact today. incredibly, the book doesn't preach, hyperventilate or exaggerate. These characters are composites of real people who actually are out there in the slums and abandoned neighborhoods of Western society. For some of us this is not an unknown culture. For me, this book demonstrates why community activism is important, and why as much money as a society can spare should be spent on educational programs for preschoolers and youth activity centers, as well as job training alternatives side by side with regular high schools should be encouraged. Once adulthood is attained the ability of people to learn resilience and self-esteem is far more difficult, especially with the additional burdens of poor choices and addictions weighing down their past life.

Middle class values are grown in a physically safe and cash rich environment where job skills are passed down by working parents who also have the social skills of love and respect. These mores we call middle-class are not 'natural' teachings innate to being human, but are passed down by culture. Otherwise the Underclass would not exist in the form it does. The common and dreadful development in almost all Underclass/slum neighborhoods of oversized machismo in a male dog pack structure for community life where psychopaths are the admired leaders is a notorious outcome of poverty and ignorance the world over. I think this book proves my argument for elbow grease and physical programs and buildings, along with competent policing, not useless moralizing, religious meetings and political talk shows. While in my eyes this book does not sensationalize but simply reveal how it is, I know in my own attempts to describe these hopeless families many middle class denizens find it impossible to believe in the primitive harsh society of the Underclass from the vantage point of comparative privilege and lifestyle training within a competent family group that understands positive social habits as normal and cannot picture a home without any such exposure to love, loyalty, money, work ethics or consistent educational support. Basic morality may exist in a fragile form, but when morality is a useless survival technique under a regime run by murderers and sadists, the only way to live, albeit in a very short lifespan, is first by jettisoning all morality. Middle class types who think morality is a necessity not a privilege of a safe environment will not understand the people in this book.

Ideally Styled and Dark

It's not social commentary, but it explores a lot of social concerns. There is no writing for shock value here, but it is a shocking novel.

The best element is Morales' fearless style. While lengthy run-on sentences appear from time to time to add to the breathtaking momentum of dramatic scenes, the prose is still carefully constructed and easy to read. His subject matter is dark, but he withholds judgment, letting the characters do what they really would do while letting the reader decide how to feel for themselves.

The reader quickly learns that we are exploring a side of the world that most people look away from. The novel seems to try humanizing even the most depraved characters, but there are plenty of normal people who populate the fringes of the book. Don't let the subject matter trick you into thinking this is an unrealistic novel. It's simply focused on the seemingly irrational, deplorable actions of mankind. It looks upon that darkness without flinching, and it forces you to recognize the underbelly of society as equally human. It's exactly what a novel on this subject should be. Unbiased. Insightful. Unique. Important.

This book is excellent for seasoned Excel users and people who were taught (but didn't learn) statistics in your average graduate school program. I have never seen statistical concepts so briefly and at the same time well explained. Actually applying the concepts adds another level of learning. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent Reference, Not For Beginners.

I bought this book to help me with the statistical analyses involved with my senior dissertation at my university. I am a psychology major and I could use all the help I could get understanding the Results Sections in the literature. This book explains all kinds of statistics, including the very helpful ANOVA and regression analysis amongst many other. However, it doesn't explain very well when or why you use these statistics. They don't provide many examples of research or problems that require such analyses. This book is great for a step by step tutorial using Excel and handwriting statistics problems, and reading your data.... but unless you have an idea of what you're looking for in the first place, don't bother. I am totally ignorant to statistical analyses and coming into this book, I didn't know when to use ANCOVA or even what precisely it was demonstrating in relation to the research I am conducting... and I still only have a vague idea... Hopefully this will all be explained in course. But, this is a valued reference for all Excel users, without a doubt!!

More Than a Simple Spread Sheet

Excel is of course first and foremost a spreadsheet. They were designed to allow you to play what if senarios. You can change this part of the budget to see what the effect is over there.

But beyond the spread sheet functionality Excel has numerous functions and capabilities to do all kinds of analysis capabilities.

This book is on using these functions to perform a whole range of statistical functions. Not only does this book cover the functions themselves, but gives the background and description of what this particular kind of function is doing. Both numerical analysis and charting functions are included and in detail.

Don't skip the part in this book called the Part of Tens. This section in the For Dummies books often has some interesting points, but here the summation of statistical limitations is just great.

I admit it: I sometimes grow weary of hearing about all the challenges faced by pastors and pastors' wives and pastors' kids. Is a pastor's vocation really so different from any other? Can it really be such a challenge to the rest of his family? Could it be that pastors are just a little too sensitive about the whole thing?

I haven't been a pastor long enough to speak with a whole lot of authority. But a few years into this life, I can at least vouch that a pastor's family does face a number of unique challenges, challenges that are different from those faced by a small business owner or salaried employee. (I have been both.) Pastoral ministry is a difficult calling not just for a man, but for his whole family.

Brian Croft has a burden for practical matters of pastoral ministry and writes often at practicalshepherding.com. He has teamed up with his wife to Cara to write The Pastor's Family. This is a book that calls a pastor to the task of shepherding his family through the challenges of pastoral ministry.

It took only a few pages for the book to help me grasp something that should be obvious but that had largely escaped me until now. Much of what makes a pastor's challenge unique as he shepherds his family does not come from the church but from his own heart. In the chapter titled simply "The Problem," Croft shows that pastors face internal demands of approval, appearance, success, and much besides. These are expectations the pastor places upon himself and they can soon come to control him and to dominate his decision-making. The demands soon become idols, things that hold out the promise of satisfaction and significance. Soon a man will sacrifice his family and neglect their care in order to pursue satisfaction. "The problem rests not in the demands and pressures we face but in how we create idols out of those demands, idols that lead us to neglect our family and dishonor God."

The solution is to better understand, appreciate and apply the good news of what Christ has accomplished, and to understand that our significance is found in him. "Struggling pastors need to rely on two facets of the biblical gospel is they hope to experience its power: they need to own their sin, acknowledging their neglect and failure, and they need to rely on the grace Christ offers, trusting in the gifts and promises of God rather than in their own efforts to secure what they want and need."

With the foundation laid, the Crofts go on to write several chapters about the pastor's wife and the pastor's family. In most cases Brian writes the chapter with Cara adding comments here and there; in two cases, though, Cara leads the way and leaves Brian to add his comments. It is quite an effective format that accomplishes two things: it adds a woman's perspective and wisdom and it also makes the book more applicable to a pastor's wife. The Crofts strike a good balance between the descriptive and the prescriptive, between what the Bible commands and wise applications of that truth. They open up their church, their home and their family just enough to give us a glimpse of principles in action.

There are a few parts of the book that were especially helpful to me: the section on serving, encouraging and discipling your wife; the section on praying with and for your wife; the practical instructions for individually discipling your children; and the two chapters written by Cara, since they helped me better understand the challenges my wife does face or may soon face.

All throughout the history of the church there have been pastors--and you may well know some of them--who have sacrificed their families on the altar of ministry. Too many neglected wives and forsaken children can testify to men who time and time again chose ministry in place of family. Every pastor can testify to the power of this temptation, which is exactly why there is such an urgent need for The Pastor's Family. This book challenges pastors to care first and best for their wives and children and it carefully draws upon biblical wisdom to allow them to do that very thing. It is a book I intend to read with Aileen and one I heartily recommend to every pastor.

Identifies the problem; gives practical guidance for a solution

One of the main reasons pastors struggle with caring for their families is because they judge success in the same way that the world judges success. Big numbers, big crowds, big platform, big buildings, big, big, big. But this definition of success leaves the pastor with little time, mental bandwidth, and faithful presence to give to his family. The regret of failures pulls him into the past. The need to hit a home run on the next sermon, the next project pulls him into the future. Meanwhile, he can't be sincerely, fully present for his family in the moment. The demands for his time and attention are louder and more powerful as they come from his staff and church members than they are from his family. So the pastor's family gets the leftovers. This experience leaves wives, sons, and daughters burned. It becomes easy for them to become bitter at their husband, father, pastor, and the church he leads.

Brian acknowledges and calls out this problem. And he gives this helpful, memorable line: It's not you; it's me. This line is the way a pastor should own his family's difficulties with his vocation. And then the majority of the book lays out plans, priorities, and practical advice for how to care for your family as a pastor. The book gives a thorough vision for managing one's household while also managing the household of God.

The Joy of Ministry and Family

At this moment, I’m finishing up my third year of full-time pastoral ministry. I remember studying for the ministry, and one of the things my professors ingrained in us repeatedly was that we must guard the calling. Burnout is too prevalent among current ministers. One of the most vulnerable areas of burnout for a pastor is undoubtedly his family. When a family is consistently placed second to the ministry, it has devastating consequences. So, as a new dad myself, I wanted–I needed–to read something on protecting my family.

Brian and Cara Croft have a unique book here. They offer some incredibly practical warnings and advice for the pastor and his family. Throughout each chapter, both Brian and Cara have an opportunity to share from their unique perspectives. This makes portions of the book more directed toward the minister’s wife. A part of me wishes the book was divided into parts for easier readability, but, nonetheless, the presence of both voices was necessary and appreciated. Additionally, each chapter concludes with discussions for the family.

At the same time, I wish the book talked about the joys and benefits of ministry that affect the family. Much of the book takes a somber tone of ministers who inappropriately balanced their home and church. While this is certainly saddening and devastating, there are also ministers who enjoyed the blessings of a family and church balanced. They hit on this fact momentarily throughout the chapters, but I wish more attention was given to this detail. The tone appeared to be more, “Guard your family from the church!” Rather, I wish the tone communicated, “Live in a way so that your family grows to appreciate and love the church!” That really ought to be our aim as ministers.

Nevertheless, this is a valuable book to every minister. I recommend it to the young ministers such as myself. May we heed the warnings within this book and be a generation marked by our healthy stewardship and priorities. It’s also a book for the veterans in ministry as it simply offers more ways we can each connect with our families. If you’re not in ministry, it probably won’t speak to you on the same level. Yet, it will give you a glimpse into the pastor’s life and home–hopefully creating a deeper understanding.
