Looking for a little bit of encouragement? Look here!

Some days it feels like there is nothing but bad news, everywhere you turn. Health insurance frustrations, devastation in the Philippines, murders, robberies, couples you thought were strong are getting divorced, friends are hurt in a bad car accident, there’s another child diagnosed with cancer… it goes on and on. It gets hard to be optimistic, and we could all use a little encouragement.

I requested to read and review Encouragement for Today: devotions for every day living by Renee Swope, Lysa TerKeurst, Samantha Evilsizer and the Proverbs 31 Team, hoping I’d get that encouragement the helps keep me my usual optimistic self.

This book is, for me, sheer perfection.

First off, my attention span reading these days is minute. This book is broken down into 100 “chapters,” each ranging from two to three pages long. That’s it! It’s a quick easy read here and there, giving me that boost I want.

Second, each chapter follows a lovely “formula.” It starts with a story that ends with a short prayer based on the focus of the story. It then challenges to remember, reflect and respond, making each chapter something of a workbook for the soul.

Third, it’s a healthy dose of faith without being overbearing. It reminds you God’s got your back without preaching using an in your face approach. And that’s just the way I like it. Subtle but strong in its faith messages.

The topics covered in this book are wide ranging, and I can see this book ending up tattered and worn through the years and I turn it time and time again for a little bit of encouragement. Check it out sometime… perhaps make it a stocking stuffer this Christmas for someone you think might need a little boost here and there.

Personal, Relational Devotional

Each devo starts with the day's Bible verse and then the devotional which are at most 2 pages long, but the majority are just a page long. That is easy to digest in five minutes for a busy mom. I liked the extra bits at the end most: a closing prayer, Remember (the day's takeaway), Reflect (a question to ponder), Respond (your 'activity'), and Power verses (for digging deeper). All are short and sweet and work to bring you deeper into the devotional. This is perhaps the best part of the book for me. Too many devotionals list a verse and a story and BAM. Done. Close book, move on with day. Spending time with God shouldn't be just another checklist item. Adding these 'R's to the devotional encourages us to move throughout our day with the Word on our mind.

What I didn't like about the devotional, was that I was looking for it to go deeper. The devotionals themselves seem light, quick, blog like. I suppose I shouldn't hold that against them. The authors are from Proverbs 31 and each also have individual blogs as well. Thus they write much more personally, relationally. Perhaps I am just more used to devotionals that stick to Bible stories and expanding on the day's verse. Encouragement for Today authors will tell stories about their families and friends and relate it to the verse and God leaving me feeling as if I just read a great blog post.

Im nächsten Unterkapitel steht die Symboldidaktik im Zentrum, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine große Bedeutung in der Unterrichtspraxis der Religionsunterrichts gewonnen hat. Dabei sollen besonders die symboldidaktischen Ansätze der beiden bedeutendsten Symboldidaktiker, Halbfas und Biehl, kurz dargestellt werden (Kapitel 2.2). Da in der vorliegenden Einheit das Symbolverständnis der Schüler am Beispiel des Symbols Licht untersucht wird, folgt eine Übersicht über dessen metaphorische Bedeutung und sein Vorkommen in der Bibel (Kapitel 2.3). Der Theorieteil schließt mit einer Betrachtung der Weihnachtsgeschichte, die den erzählerischen Rahmen der Einheit bildet (Kapitel 2.4). Die verschiedenen sachlichen, didaktischen und methodischen Überlegungen, die dieser Einheit zugrunde liegen, werden im Planungsteil dargestellt (Kapitel 3). Dort findet sich auch eine Übersicht über die erteilten Stunden. Diese Stunden, in denen ich versucht habe, die zuvor erarbeiteten theoretischen Inhalte umzusetzen, sind im praktischen Teil der Arbeit (Kapitel 4) dokumentiert.

Wow. Wow. Wow. Just when you think that NOTHING more could come to light about TITANIC along this comes this extraordinary book.

From the first few pages I was entranced. The book reads like a well-written novel; I could hardly put it down. From a story I thought I already knew, no less! But the author sheds new light on the fabled CARPATHIA and the infamous CALIFORNIA. My eyes teared up while reading about Capt. Rostron and his heroic efforts to speed to the doomed liner. Particularly engaging was the equal effort of his crew - an aspect of the night I never thought about previously. To think about the black gang (the men in the inferno of the boiler rooms) shoveling coal like never before and all for speed, speed, speed! Breathtaking! Equally absorbing was when the crew was assembled and told the situation - an hour after the CARPATHIA has already turned around. Until then most of them were simply following orders, no matter how inexplicable they might have seemed. Imagine the collective shock that went through the crew upon hearing that the mighty TITANIC was sinking.

By way of a chilling, bizarre, and wholly unsettling contrast was the total lack of effort by Cap. Lord of the CALIFORNIA. I had always thought that the jury was out regarding Lord and the actual whereabouts of the CALIFORNIA, and thought that the jury could never, at this late date, even come to a verdict. But the author makes a definite case for guilty. No question. The author also details a psychological profile of Lord. This was utterly fascinating and makes sense out of behavior that before the book simply made no sense.

One night. One tragedy. And two captains with polar opposite reactions. Yep, wow.

I have always felt that the definitive TITANIC move has yet to be made. While reading the book I kept thinking: what a movie! Imagine a TITANIC movie with TITANIC as a bit player! Hollywood, are you reading this?

IMPORTANT: I believe that this book would be equally engaging to the non-TITANIC buff. It's simply a riveting story and very well told. And, you know, it's not about ships. It's about people and their reactions to extraordinary circumstances. That it's all true makes it that much more compelling.

The Other Side of the Night

On the night of the sinking of Titanic, there were two ships whose actions, or inactions, were scrutinised by a relentless press and public after the magnitude of the disaster became apparent. The first was the Carpathia and the second the Californian. This interesting and well written book looks at the dangers ships faced and the way that the invention of Marconi's wireless telegraphy ended the isolation of ships at sea. In theory, this meant that someone would always be near and answer a distress call...

Both Harold Cottam, wireless operator on Carpathia and Cyril Evans, wireless operator on the Californian, received ice warnings and had contact with Titanic shortly before the tragedy. The ice was so bad that the Californian had come to a stop, preferring to wait for daylight to negotiate the waters. On the last time Evans contacted Titanic he was told he was "blocking the signal", as Titanic had had problems with their wireless during the day and had a backlog of messages to send. Evans left his set and went to bed. Thus, when Titanic began to send out a distress signal, Evans was not there to receive it.

This book looks at the differing reactions to Titanic's fate. The Californian was closer to Titanic (possibly within sight of it), but by a series of errors - either wilful or accidental - did not come to the aid of the stricken ship. Meanwhile, the Carpathia received the distress signal and came immediately to help, even though she was further away. The author looks at the ways the actions and behaviour of the ships Captains had repercussions on their careers. The reactions of Arthur Henry Rostrun, Captain of Carpathia and Captain Stanley Lord on the Californian could not have been more different. Was the Californian actually within sight of Titanic? Did Lord ignore the distress rockets? Did he try to cover up the mistakes he had made when he realised the enormity of the loss of life?

Although the Carpathia arrived too late to save those in the water, they carried out a flawless rescue attempt to pick up survivors. As those in lifeboats were also in danger - the Titanic's wireless operator Phillips himself falling from a collapsible lifeboat which was heavily overcrowded and drowning - this was an important operation and undoubtedly saved lives. The author looks at how events may have been changed had Captain Lord reacted a different way - or perhaps been a different kind of man. It also looks at how the media and, later, investigations into what happened viewed Lord's behaviour and what became of the people caught up in the tragedy.

In this book the author is not afraid to draw conclusions. There are those who think Lord should be blamed and others who believe he should be exonerated. This book will give you evidence of what happened that night and afterwards and will allow you to draw your own conclusions. A well researched and readable account and an important book for anyone interested in Titanic.

Missing the Boat

While this treatment of the subject offers some new insights to April 14/15, 1912, especially the segments dealing with the activity on the Carpathia, it descends into another "Blame the Californian" piece, more "piling onto" Captain Loard. For a work that was published in 2009, what really stands out is the lack of reference to Sean Mulroney's 2006 "The Titanic and the Mystery Ship", which of all the books on the subject, is the fairst, most scientifically researched and best presented work on the subject. The other glaring omission is the lack of fair reference to the 1992 Reapprasial of the Evidence by the British Major Accident Investigtion Board. That document alone is worth reading and is readily accesible on the web. Mr. Butler makes the presumption that the Titanic's bow had to turn through almost 100 degrees to present the "correct" side lights to an observer to the north. Even the 1912 hearings never determined this. Mulroney does an excellent job in explaining this in his book. Again, some new, interesting material, but it leaves out facts that need to be presented for a fair comparison,

Disappointing Story, and I didn't like the Ending

13-year-old Rachel hopes that things will be just like they used to be before, when her brother Jamie comes back from serving in the Second World War, but Jamie seems different.

Rachel wants to be a playwright when she gets older, and when a new teacher offers to tutor her and help her, she accepts, even when her friends think that his intentions may not be pure.
What is wrong with Jamie though? Will he ever get better? Can Rachel really write plays? What does her teacher really want with her? And why is her mother suddenly in bed all the time?

This story was okay, but certain things annoyed me, and the ending was pretty poo.

Rachel was quite a naïve character, and some of the things she came out with just irritated me. I couldn't quite believe it when one of the first things she said to her brother after he returned from the war was `was it exciting?'. I mean really? How about horrific, and terrifying? I wouldn't choose the word `excited' - as Jamie replied - some of his friends died.

The storyline in this was okay, but I didn't feel like much was resolved by the end. The main storylines were Jamie coming back from the war, Jamie being ill, Rachel's dreams of being a playwright, and her misadventures with a teacher at school. These were all okay storylines, but at times I felt like the story wasn't going anywhere.
I also disliked the way that people treated Jamie after he got home from the war - telling him that he had changed, and they wanted him to change back, and moaning that he wasn't eating, and that he needed to get over it. I know PTSD wasn't like a known thing back in the 1940's, but still, did nobody think he might have been affected by what had happened to him in the war?

The ending was what annoyed me the most though. I was actually afraid to read the last page, because I was scared that we were about to get a very sad ending, but what we actually got was... nothing. Yes, that's right - nothing. The story just stopped! One storyline was resolved, but the most important ones were just left hanging. I could not quite believe it - I actually kept scrolling in case there was a mistake and there was more to come - but no, that was the end. I mean just what?

Having finished this, I'm now wondering what the point was, and I hate it when a story doesn't seem to have any point to it. I feel like I read this whole book, went through all this mediocre stuff, and then didn't even find out how things ended. I mean did Jamie recover from his illness or not?
Overall; a disappointing story, and I really didn't like the end.

The best thing about this book is the cover

I could not be more disappointed with a book. I chose this book for the intriguing summary and cover, but I could not have chosen worse. This post WWII book has several elements that could be intriguing, but so many things prevent this from being a good book.

Firstly, there are way too many problems. I understand that this is a 'coming of age' book, but the number of problems should be reasonable. Rachel, the main character, is a teenager going about her normal life. It's post WWII and her beloved brother Jamie has come home. While not drastically injured, he has PTSD and after a while an illness which turns out to be Leukemia. After Rachel's teacher retires, she gets a new teacher who flirts with the girls and seems like a pedophile. Rachel loves her teacher, 'Tommy', as she calls him and spends almost the entire book dreaming about their pretend relationship. Rachel also convinces herself one of her friend's mothers is a killer. Throw in a new baby in her home that everyone seems to hate and beloved missing neighbor and you have way to many plots to not only keep track of but find a way to resolve. At the end, they never are really resolved.

One aspect of the book that is interesting - and extremely frustrating at the same time - is the interspersed letters Rachel's brother Jamie writes to Rachel. While Rachel is the narrator of the book, there are frequent breaks, one or more per chapter, from Jamie's perspective. It seems to be like he writes the diary to Rachel, and I'm not sure if he intends to give it to Rachel at some point, or it's just easier for Jamie to get mental relief by conjuring up the person his sister used to be and write these mythical letters to her. I think part of the problem is the font the letters are written in. The font is quite feminine, so you have to make a point in your head of reminding yourself that these letters are not from Rachel the narrator's point of view, but from her brother Jamie's. It would greatly aid the flow if the font was in a more masculine font or maybe typewriter font to fit in with the time period.

The character of Rachel is also quite an unsympathetic character. Selfish and self-centered, there was very little to recommend her. Constantly thinking only of herself when she had a ill brother with cancer and PTSD, friends who had difficult home lives, parents with problems, and a new baby brother, she acted horribly to them all and never seemed to feel remorse. So eager to grow up, she didn't even seem human to me. No love for babies, ignorant of boundaries, inventing horrible stories about her friends, no empathy for her parents, full of herself, etc. Aside from her eczema, I found nothing to recommend her. Rachel was incredibly cruel in her thoughts and actions. A particular passage that comes to mind is during Christmas. Rachel wants to get her pregnant mother a diet book for her 'middle age paunch'. First of all, she's heartless. Secondly, after the depression and WWII, the thought that anyone would be so heartless and unaware of real issues is disgusting. Thirdly, it was not called 'paunch' on women during that time.

I was quite disturbed by the unnecessary vulgarity, particularly with the repeated discussions of 'the clap'. While it was a concern at the time, I highly doubt middle class teens would know so much about it. Even if they want to mention it once, the fact that it was repeatedly used as a plot element was unnecessary. It's almost like the author felt that because it was a teen book, she had to mention STD's. Another vulgar, inappropriate and unnecessary plot point.

One of the things that bothered me the most was the anit-Catholic views in the book. This was most evident in the horrible way they spoke of Jamie's girlfriend Mary. Frankly, it was bigotry and a completely unnecessary addition to the book. The author could have still had the plot points about Jamie being unable to marry because of no job (which the author did) and how they grew apart without taking the opportunity to Catholic bash. I know this was and still is a view of many, I found it disturbing and not adding to the plot at all. This sort of thing would never be mentioned in a book review and illustrates why I have to read every book I purchase for my school.

While this book was written in a readable way, it had too many plot points, contained some time period inappropriate elements, and seemed bigoted at times, I suppose it's unfortunately what passes for teen books today. If the author could have deleted some of the plot elements, been completely authentic with historical elements, and done without the anti-Catholic elements, this could have made a much better book. So disappointing that in it's current state it was nominated for so many awards. This speaks to the inherit poor expectations of teen books.

It’s tough to be thirteen, especially at a time when women are still inferior, war weighs heavy on everybody’s mind, and trying to find oneself can mean making mistakes. Sheltered for most of her life, Rachel is coming of age, her brother has just returned from the war and suffers from major depression, and her aging mother became pregnant, putting Rachel at the bottom of everyone’s priorities. On the brink of being a woman, but still a child, Rachel wants to be seen as mature and grown, and when her teacher offers to tutor her, his intentions are exactly adult-like and you quickly realize Rachel and her family are a train wreck.

“Granny’s eyes are on my lips. Here it comes, I think. A war paint crack, or raspberry jam, or here’s a hankie, wipe it off. But, no. She grins at me and winks.”

The book is a mix of Rachel’s stories and her brothers’ unsent letters from the war, which eventually put the pieces of the story more in focus up until the end. By the end of the book you find you are left with many unanswered questions. Does this mean there will be a sequel? Other than the weird ending, I really liked this book. It is one I think most teens can relate to either personally or as a “Jersey Shore”-type story. I would definitely read book two if available!

About the Author
The Revd Dr Richard A. Burridge is the Dean of King's College, London. He is the author of the recent Jesus Now and Then (SPCK, 2004). His first book What are the Gospels? A Comparison with Graeco-Roman Biography (CUP 1992, n/e 2004) was widely acclaimed as a breakthrough in Gospel criticism.

An excellent guide to understanding the gospels.

This is one of the most concise yet comprehensive books I've read on the subject, a book that effectively combines scholarship and faith. As Michael Green writes," Few academics emerge from the ivory tower to write in an attractive way for the general reader. Few theologians combine academic rigour with spiritual sensitivity. Richard Burridge does both these things,..." My students agree. They use and treasure their copy.

Helpful but disappointing...

In "Four Gospels, One Jesus?," Richard Burridge attempts to reconcile the four accounts of the life of Jesus in the New Testament, in light of their distinctive styles and content. Using the analogy of four different pictures of Winston Churchill each portraying different and very real aspects of Churchill's character and personality without contradiction, Burridge suggests that each of the four gospel accounts offers us an important aspect of the nature of who Jesus was.

Though the premise and introduction of the book were compelling, I found the main substance of the book, one chapter on each of the four gospels, to be rather tedious. He walks through each gospel, picking out literary patterns and identifying key themes. Though he offered some interesting insights, these chapters were too dry and inaccessible to be very helpful.

Thankfully, this book ended well. Burridge's final chapter helps to make sense of the diverse observations that he made in the preceding chapters. He offers a very compelling case that smashing the gospel accounts together into one uber-narrative, as many readers of the New Testament are inclined to do for the sake of simplicity and 21st-century literary sensibilities, is entirely inappropriate and contrary to the intentions and motivations of the biblical authors. He also suggests that the existence of the four gospels is not some sort of mistake that we ought to try to correct by picking a favorite. Instead, he encourages believers in Jesus to read and study each account, which together offer an amazing and fascinating picture of who Jesus was. The challenge to encounter the gospels with intellectual honesty and faithful humility is a tricky one, and the beginning and end of Burridge's book have helped to clear my head and soften my heart as I continue to read them. Though I wish that the substantive core of the book had been more engaging, my understanding and appreciation for the biblical accounts of the life of Jesus Christ are richer for having waded through it.

This book changed the way I view the Four Gospels...and has deepened my faith in the one Jesus to whom they witness. The book is academic in its approach, addressing the most important areas of textual and theological criticism, and yet it reads like a devotional. Good stuff for scholars and laypeople alike!

This book was hugely disappointing. I realize that I am offering the first dissenting opinion, but I notice that most of the people who give “The Profitable Consultant” a 5-star rating refer to the author by first name. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Jay Niblick has 175 people working for him and plenty of clients, but his book reveals him to be supercilious, a poor communicator, and unwilling to document any of his advice (with a couple of exceptions) with data. Because so much of the book is opinion stated as fact, readers must accept that the author is an expert because he is financially successful. The writing is poorly organized and not always clear.

Niblick is condescending and disrespectful of readers at times. For instance, someone qualified to be a consultant probably doesn’t need a how-to book to know that they will need office equipment and a place to work when they become self-employed.

Niblick has a thinly disguised hidden agenda, which is to encourage and protect high consultant fees. In a capitalist country, that is arguably an admirable objective, but some of the ethics he expresses for commanding those fees are sleazy.

“The Profitable Consultant” isn’t a complete waste of time. Much of the advice is valid. However, the good advice in the book can also be found in many better books about how to start a business.

If you are a consultant or hoping to become one, this is the book for you. It is the most comprehensive treatment of issues and decisions facing a consulting business. Jay addresses those issues directly and offers practical solutions. I first bought the Kindle edition, but am now buying hard covers because this book will be a bedrock in my library.The Profitable Consultant: Starting, Growing, and Selling Your Expertise. Practical, Profitable, Common Sense for the Business Consultant

Jay hits the mark time and again on the basics in starting up a consultancy practice. Moreover, his recommendations on Education Based Marketing are huge pluses. He has provided critically important and helpful, guiding tips based on years of experience in the practice of consulting and coaching himself - as well as coaching others to become more successful. As a beneficiary of Jay's practical, profitable, and common sense approach I highly recommend other consultants and coaches to read the book. It's a great way for you to re-focus on how to grow your practice through a variety of methods and have the time to kick back and enjoy the benefits.
