A MUST read!
By Azahara
I had the opportunity to read this wonderful book through Netgalley. I requested it for the first line of the synopsis "The people of Kaya die in pairs" and because I wanted to change a little of literary genre and I have to say I was not disappointed at all, in fact I LOVED it.
This review will be one of the most difficult ones because the book gave me so many emotions that even after having waited a day to review it, yet I feel all the feelings of the characters piled inside me.
It had been a long time since I liked a fantasy so much as I did with Avery. Charlotte has created a mysterious, haunting and dangerous world filled with many emotions. I'm very glad I had the opportunity to read this book because since I read Clockwork Princess any book had come to me so deep inside me. And that is because Avery is one of those books that while you're reading it you cannot help but sigh, mourn and talk with yourself and with the characters. On several occasions, I had to stop reading because the book conveys so many emotions that it is difficult to continue reading while the heart feel cramped. The story is wonderful and unparalleled fluid. Through the words I have come to feel the fury of Thorne, the strength of Ambrose, Ava's loss and Roselyn's wishes.
too many feels | TumblrIt had been a long time since I read about characters so well developed. The fact that this novel is told in 4 different points of view gives the opportunity to discover the world of Kaya and Pirenti from different angles. The skill that the authorhas to create 4 different people with such different personalities is incredible and the fact that she could convey all that in the book is a fantastic feat.
I highly recommend this novel, but I've to told you that you have to be prepared to be transported to a very complicated world full of emotions. Sometimes it will seem so vivid that you will feel that you have become in one of the characters.
If I could give it more than 5 stars I will and I've definitely become a fan of Charlotte Macgonaghy and I cannot wait to read the second book. Unfortunately it is only in English and in ebook version.

A great start to the series!

Review: 4 out of 5 stars
Avery is the first book in The Chronicles of Kaya series by Charlotte McConaghy and I have to admit, I initially bypassed this book on Netgalley because of the cover (I know, never judge a book by its cover) but when I was contacted by the publisher expressing her passion for the book, I couldn't pass up the chance to give it a go and I'm really pleased I did.
Fantasy is a genre that is hit or miss with me, I either really enjoy them and get lost in the magical world created or they end up on my DNF pile; Avery follows the story of twenty year-old Ava from Kayan who has lost her bondmate, Avery; when one lover dies the other generally follows, Ava has been the exception but she has lost half of her soul and is miserable so she seeks vengeance against the barbarian queen of Pirenti and her offspring.
In the early stages of the book, I was concerned about the number of POV we have; dual is usually my maximum but in this story it worked quite well, especially because it was told in first person.
Ava's journey is fraught with danger and despair but also hope as she meets Ambrose who is a deadly Prince of Pirenti, we also read about Prince Thorne and Roselyn who are married, their personal struggles are quite emotional, Thorne is a brutal man and quite cruel which didn't endear me to him but the story behind why made me understand him a lot more.
All of the characters are fleshed out well and learning about their differences based on where they were from was quite intriguing. Pirentis are ruthless warriors raised in a barbaric and brutal society and the Kayans are the complete opposite.
Charlotte McConaghy's creative world is vibrant and unique, filled with loveable if not unusual characters, magical mystery, kick-butt action sequences and a spellbinding love story that brings about many emotions; it kept me entertained right from the very beginning. Her writing is crisp and the plot flowed beautifully.
Thank-you kindly to Random House Australia for the opportunity to read and review Avery, I am really excited for the sequel.

Loved these characters!
By Candace Robinson
One thing that I loved in this book, and for me it works best in fantasy, is a story of redemption. This story is not just the story of Ava, Avery and Ambrose either, it's also the story of Thorne and Rosalinde. We get the POV of all of them, but don't despair, this worked very well for this story once you get settled into it. Initially it was slightly jarring but I settled in very quickly. I think getting a first person POV from each of them gets us into their heads so we really know WHY and HOW and WHAT of it all. Ambrose and Thorne have been raised to be awful, awful men. Their mother is exceedingly cruel and they are her right hand. But we quickly see there's more to them, but for them to realize it, and then to find their way, is not so easy.
I really liked the characters in the story a lot. Ava has a lot of forgiveness to find and has a path to find herself. Her mate has been killed and she's determined to find revenge. Not only that but everyone has turned against her because she should have died with him and she didn't. In route to getting revenge she 'runs' into Ambrose and their story was rollercoaster of emotions for me. I teared up more than once watching it all unfold.
Thorne and Rosalind are husband and wife but Thorne is cruel and has trouble finding the good in him. Rosalind sees it, but she's constantly punished by him for not doing things right, for embarrassing him, etc. She knows there's more to him, but can he find it in himself? The story of these two was heartbreaking. Normally I say that any man that beats his wife is unforgivable but I found myself wanting to forgive him. It was a struggle for him to change, to find his way, but the story was tremendous and heart breaking.
This is a romance, but it's also a fantasy. The world created was easy to imagine. I loved the magic and even the scenery. It was any easy book to keep reading as I was invested in the characters but I also felt invested in the world. I wanted to see a change and know that things could turn out different for these people.
This is an adult book but would work for mature YA readers. The sex scene is brief and not too descriptive. There's some gore but I think the descriptions were vague enough that for me at least it wasn't too much. I may have flinched at the violence, but it felt necessary for the story.
I definitely recommend this book! Romance and fantasy lovers both should consider picking it up!
