Explanation of the Journey of Kaddish!

I am 9.5 months into saying Kaddish for my son, Sgt. First Class, Or Oved-Weiss, of Sayeret Duvdevan. He died in an improbably foolish accident in Thailand after finishing his army service.

I started by reading a transliteration of Kaddish, then started saying it alone daily, then several times alone daily. I then tried it in Shul during Shakrit in the presence of a Minyan and felt it work its healing wonders as the other worshipers responded to my prayer.

I never really contemplated the prayer's origins or the depth of its meanings beyond the personal infusion of strength I received from it. Then I read Leon Charney's wonderful book, Kaddish. It is a clear and frankly brilliant examination of who we are as Jews and how this prayer has had and has the ability to sustain us and keep us as `am kshay oreff' (a stiff necked people). How we can face any and all tragedies and stare them down with a simple and elegant affirmation of our Faith.

This book tied all of my feelings together. I recommend it as highly as possible as it is important on every level.

The Da Vinci Code meets the Torah!

Cheers to Charney and Mayzlish for weaving together such a readable spiritual and historical journey. Once I picked the book up, I could not put it down. I found myself learning so much from the Crusades to the Bible to the plight of Judaism in the Middle Ages up until the Holocaust. And it's all poetically woven together around this one prayer and unraveling the mystery around its creation and development- the Kaddish; a prayer that apparently unifies Jewish people all around the world- beautiful in its utter simplicity and reverence to God!

I should note from the outset that I am not Jewish (at least not practicing). My father was Jewish and my mother Jamaican, but my father never practiced Judaism nor did I growing up. Reading this book therefore became a personal joy because it unlocked so much about myself that I had no idea even existed. Although it is clear from this text that many Jewish people too are unfamiliar with this history. Charney and Mayzlish run around the world- from America to Europe to Israel- speaking with primary sources to unravel a truth, until now unknown. And more importantly, this book is just great reading no matter what your background- Jewish, Christian, Muslim or academic!

I would have never known. Can't wait for the movie!!

The Mystery of Kaddish - Its profound influence of Judaism

This book is a landmark in the study of Jewish history and the sociology of Halacha (Jewish law). What is the mystery of the Kaddish all about? Where was the Mourner's Kaddish born? Why has it attracted such great attention? The Mourner's Kaddish is written in the Aramaic and is recited at the burial ceremony and from then on, for 11 months, a few times during each of the daily prayers. A word concerning the Kaddish is in order.

As the authors tell us, the origin of the Aramaic text is in the Talmud. In its first part, the Kaddish invites the congregation to assert the sanctification of God's name in the world. Its second part, however, relegates the sanctified name to the domain of the transcendent - beyond all blessings and consolations. The prayer addresses human reality, the need to glorify the Lord, yet it seals all hope for meaningful understanding of and commonsense consolation for the human lot. As such, this prayer demands of every ordinary Jew to adhere to a high church of believers who would not concretize the attributes of the Lord, and thus accept birth and death in metaphysical equanimity - not to be confused moral neutrality. This is a great lesson.

One of the most embarrassing situations in Jewish secular life is the attending of a funeral in Israel, becoming a living witness to the struggle of the mourner with the Aramaic text. Poetry is turned into a dyslexic experience. Most secular Jews fail to pronounce, let alone understand the sublime message the text in conveying. The authors tell us this text is a sort of internal letter transmitted within the Jewish community, endorsed for all mourners one thousand years ago, handed over from generation to generation since the time of the Crusaders.

Till that time of the Crusaders, the Kaddish had been recited following the death of distinguished scholars only. The massacres of Jews by the Crusaders and, later on, the extensive losses during the black plague, forced the Rabbis to address the sorrow and frustration of the ordinary person. They borrowed on Christian burial rituals, tells the book, adapted a traditional and highly meaningful Talmudic text, thus aiming to sustain a Jewish community in the face of disaster. The descendents of the Holocaust generation know all-too-well the destructive impact the Eclipse of God can have on traditional Jewish life.

According to the authors, the introduction of the Mourner's Kaddish into Jewish tradition was a democratic move taken by rabbinical authority. It was a concession to popular psychology. For, as you may know, Jewish festivities waive mourning rituals, except the obligation to recite the Kaddish! This was the decree of the school of Rashi in the 12th century, one endorsed by all Jewish legal codes. How is it, then, that a popular ritual, introduced in the 12th century in Western Europe, was endorsed over a short period of time by the whole of the Jewish world? Here is the book's innovation within the field of the sociology of Jewish law.

One of the greatest commentators on the Talmud, who lived in Germany in the 14th century, was Rabbi Asher, the Rosh. His wife and son were murdered and with them a greater part of their community. Chronicles tell us that the Rosh prescribed that the members of the community recite the Mourner's Kaddish. Immediately thereafter the Rosh was invited to join the Rashba, head of the Spanish community in Toledo, upon whose death some years later, the leadership was transferred to the German scholar. East and West united at once within the four volumes of Jewish law, composed by the Rosh's son, Rabi Jacob, known as the Tur. In the volume relating to lifestyle regulations, he described the different traditions in Germany and France concerning the reciting of the Kaddish and accepted his father's and Rashi's tradition over any other existing ones. One hundred and fifty years later, this view was incorporated into Karo's, "Set Table", the final word on Jewish law compiled in Palestine. A few decades later, Rabbi Moses Iserlish of Krakow, endorsed it too in his commentary on the "Set Table". This, then, is how a popular tradition was universally codified into law for the whole of the Jewish world.

The authors' historical research is beautifully complemented by a voyage among the various Jewish communities in Israel as well as Europe. This is an endearing document, indeed, portraying the life and history of the different tribes constituting the Jewish people - Hasidic, Sephardic, Ultra-Nationalists, and others in our post-Holocaust era.

Should a Jew recite the Mourner's Kaddish? Each one must answer for oneself. For the authors, however, it is all about that which "allows religion to survive and flourish", about "the community who commitment is to the sublime", "over and above any literal observance". These words carry the best of all religions.

     Ginsberg sees violence manifested in society in many ways. "Law-preserving violence" (using Walter Benjamin's phrase) is the chief means by which society preserves social order. Behind the security of a stable society are the blunt instruments of the police, prisons, and the power of the bureaucratic state to coerce and manipulate.

     Ginsberg also discusses violence as a tool of social change, whether used in outright revolution or as a means of reform in public protests or the threat of insurrection. He notes that even groups committed to nonviolent tactics rely on the violent reactions of their opponents to achieve their ends. And to avoid the threat of unrest, modern states resort to social welfare systems (a prudent use of the carrot instead of the stick). 

      Emphasizing the unavoidability of violence to create major change, Ginsberg points out that few today would trade our current situation for the alternative had our forefathers not resorted to the violence of the American Revolution and the Civil War.

State violence is often seen as the continuation of politics by other means—to apply Clausewitz's famous observation on war. In his latest book, Johns Hopkins political scientist Ginsberg (The Fall of the Faculty) takes the contrary view, suggesting that violence is the driving force of politics. In six essays, Ginsberg analyzes such topics as bureaucracy and violence and how Cold War–era America became a nation marked more by warfare than welfare. He illustrates how the use of force can legitimate the state and examines the mechanization and depersonalization of warfare, noting that the Air Force now trains more drone operators than pilots. However, despite the book's original and exciting premise, it contains a number of stylistic and methodological flaws: for example, Ginsberg's use of the term violence, which he never defines, is so elastic that it includes wrongful prosecutions by overzealous federal bureaucrats. Ginsberg's penultimate chapter on Morality and Violence is marked by an antigovernment bias, and it includes the questionable claim that even democratic governments generally have few moral qualms about shedding the blood of disobedient citizens. Insightful, yet Superficial

I was very excited to read Prof. Ginsberg's book given my own academic research interest in political violence, only to be let down chapter after chapter. Despite being broken down into straightforward and exciting sounding chapters, the work constantly jumps back and forth between historical epochs, state and non-state actors, and political and non-political violence. It is clear throughout the book that Ginsberg is particularly interested in the American legal/prison system and its debilitating social effects. Unfortunately, many of his points are interjected at inappropriate points. His work jumps from talking about Black urban riots in the 60's to Mao's Cultural Revolution in about two paragraphs. This type of scatterbrained writing typifies the entire work.

Beyond the erratic writing style the book offers practically no original thought; it would probably work well as a supplementary text for a course on Social Violence 101. I was most excited to read his chapter on bureaucracy and violence, as I am researching that exact connection right now for my own work, only to be terribly let down by the mere synthesis of other author's work. This is not to say the book is not valuable, it just ends up talking a little about everything instead of giving detail about anything (except the prison system). I would be cautious before purchasing and consider buying works more focused on the particular area of violence you are interested in: Hannah Arendt, Georges Sorel and Frantz Fanon all have excellent philosophical essays on violence, and there are a multitude of better works chronicling the history of violence in a more general sense.

An Unexpected Gem for those interested in violence and its political place

Mr. Ginsberg's book, because of its title, may be off-putting to many readers, however if you can look beyond the title you will discover 'The Value of Violence' is NOT a glorification of violence and how useful it is on a practical level. Rather, 'The Value of Violence' is deeply unhappy about the fact that violence does solve many problems. The Author repeats the sentiment over and over again--in almost the same words. This part of the book can be a little tedious. What, in effect, 'The Value of Violence' is is an analysis of violence, its causes, and its uses--however, Mr. Ginsberg goes beyond this and actually critiques violence in many cases.

What really stands out, for this reader, is the way in which the author analyzes and critiques prison rape. Still and all, Mr. Ginsberg's main thrust is the analysis of the value of violence and its nature.

Mr. Ginsberb is interested in the following:

1.Violence if ths driving force of politics
2.In using violence, state generally have a number advantages relative to other actors.
3. Most states do not rely upon naked violence as an instrument of governance but seek to refine violence and make it a more effective tool.
4. Another instrument that reduces the state's need to rely upon overt violence is public welfare.
5.Governments use violence against their citizens every day.
6.Violence is...the great engine of political change.

These six points are carefully analyzed and then explored through examples...sometimes the examples are a little longer than they need be...in the world of the ebook reader brevity is a virtue...this virtue is not always adopted by the author but the examples are very very good.

Mr. Ginsberg also critiques the Hobbesians like Steven Pinker [whose book The Angels of Our this reviewer also enjoyed very much]. This analysis is very astute. It alone would be worth buying the book.

The author is particularly critical of professional politicians but makes a very good case for this and why politicans 'must' be duplicitous. Another reason to read the book.

Violence, it is argued, answers 3 of the major questions in political life: statehood, territoriality, and power. A fascinating analysis that readers today are not used to seeing because of the pacifist nature of most academics today--especially those with an Anti-Western bias...which includes most Western academics today.

What was unique for this reader was the critique of Nonviolence as deployed by Mahatma Gandhi and Mr. King.The notion that nonviolence was "designed to produced economic and social disruption and, in some instances, to provoke violent response from their opponents" was fascinating. Most do not read the cult of nonviolence this way...even the Occupy movement but it seems undeniable.

None of this is to say that Mr. Ginsberg is glorifying or encouraging violence. What is happening in the book is an attempt to give an honest analysis of violence it history and it future. The latter being implicit in the book's argument.

This reviewer enjoyed Mr. Ginsberg's book very much and would highly recommend it to readers of political science and geopolitics of any particular leaning.

Initially I was disappointed that it seemed more discursive than definitive

I saw a C-SPAN interview with the author, causing me to order the book. I've been interested in the peculiar fact that so many people, even the seemingly-intelligent or at least highly-educated, claim to want to see the elimination of violence. It is so obvious that violence is natural, and thus inevitable, necessary and desirable, I was excited to see that an eminent scholar had applied his mind to discussing the context and ramifications of violence's value.
This is not a long book chocked full of informative statistics. Initially I was disappointed that it seemed more discursive than definitive, being essentially a collection of topical ruminations having to do with the way violence works in the U.S., especially recently. However, as I read I found many incisive insights and observations, and sufficient detail to keep me reading. Especially interesting are the extensive attention Ginsberg devotes to the role of bureaucracy as a sort of handmaiden of violence, and how the mediocre American 'justice system' often increases and supports violence in many ways it could be reducing or better-controlling it.

The author's tone suggested to me that his decades of studying American society has left him melancholy about our country, though quite realistic and pragmatic, and certainly with thought-provoking insight and understanding.

Amazing, astonishing recipes; long ingredient lists

Saw this book several months ago when it first came out. I passed it by because I saw "Smoke" and "New Southern Kitchen": My mind immediately turned to barbecue and Deep South Gulf Coast recipes. Living down below Houston, I don't need another "new" attitude towards cooking Texas- or Louisiana-style dishes. But when I saw it available at my local library, I decided to get on the waiting list for it. I've had it for a few weeks now and I'm very excited by the recipes I've tried and those that I've marked. Boy, what a fool I've been! Oh, what I've been missing! I can't avoid it; I am ordering my own copy of this book. (And I think the cover of this book is a bit misleading--I'm not sure where "Smoke" comes in...)

As I state in the title of my review, the ingredient lists are way, way long. But--for once--I don't care how long they are. The many ingredients allow for a complexity of flavor that I don't often see in "do-able" recipes. Assembling ingredients is probably the most difficult and time-consuming part of these recipes. And that's not a terrible thing, is it? By "do-able"--and I like "do-able"--I mean recipes that don't take hours and hours to build; recipes that don't break the bank, and recipes where the instructions don't cause my heart to flutter with anxiety (over intricacy issues) or consternation (over unclear directions).

And, I usually shy away from cookbooks written by restaurant chefs, but this time I don't care about that either. The dishes that Chef Lee has created for this book are outstanding and he is not overbearing.

There are incredible recipes in this book. The ingredient combinations tie together and overlap; they blossom and bloom into some awesome and unique taste experiences and take on and highlight the best of many cultures: His Korean heritage and his Grandmother's cooking, the places near his old neighborhood (where he was told not to venture when he was a youngster), his experience working in New York and the dishes learned from his friends and co-workers, his adopted home in Louisville, Kentucky and the artisan farms, craftsmen and distilleries of neighboring counties and states.

You can STOP READING HERE if you are short on time, as I hope I've conveyed to you that this book is well-worth buying. But if you want more info and input from me, keep on reading: I like to write and I love this book.

The recipes incorporate so many main ingredients and flavors that appeal to me: There is an entire chapter dedicated to lamb; there is a chapter on pickles (near and dear to my heart); there are Asian flavors and my favorite booze, bourbon; there is country ham. He uses miso, rice, citrus, soy sauce, peppers, mayo and cola. Then, of course there is a chapter of beef, pork, fowl (chicken, turkey, game birds) and well-loved Southern veggies.

Do you like to make quick pickles? I sure do! Included are some interesting combinations that I've not run across before: Pineapple and jicama, caraway (instead of dill) to flavor cuke slices, Bourbon-Pickled Jalapenos (and I think mine turned out prettier than his because I used both red and green peppers), jasmine tea and star anise with peaches, grape halves with chai tea, coffee beans with beets and cherries with rosemary. There are also four seasonal recipes for kimchi. I like to make kimchi; it's not hard to do, just a bit time-consuming and a waiting period for the fermentation process. UPDATE, Aug. 2013: The simple caraway seed and cuke pickle is the best quick pickled cuke that I've ever tasted. I've made two batches already. The peach pickle is wonderful and the pickle juice is so versatile I've been using as a secret ingredient in savory dishes. The grape pickle is tart and brings contrast to a dish. I've used it successfully in a tomato salad, of all things. I can't pick up the bourbon flavor in the jalapeno pickle and I thinking through how I can rectify that. Bottom line, at this point in time: The pickle recipes are keepers!

There is a complex "master" remoulade sauce that runs through many recipes in the book with a little of this and that added to compliment the dish--sometimes it's miso that is added, or maybe corn and chili powder, or kimchi.

Here are favorite recipes; some I've made, some are on the bucket list:
--The Vietnamese Lamb Chops (honey, bourbon, fish sauce, lime and more in the marinade) is super. (I grilled them; he roasts them.)
--There is a fabulous meatloaf flavored with cola and bourbon that he's combined with a pepper gravy and a sunny-side up egg on an open sandwich.
--He's made a ham pho that is less complex than the traditional beef pho.
--I grew up with pork ribs and sauerkraut, but Lee cooks it in such a way that he takes the simple dish over the top, and then he tops it with a horseradish cream. I may never make my old recipe again.
--He's got recipes incorporating country hams and a recipe for a tamarind-strawberry glazed "city" ham.
--There is a somewhat simple Poached Grouper that is heavenly.
--And, talking fish recipes: My favorite recipe in the book is this one: Panfried catfish; the fillets are not breaded, just fried in butter and oil in a skillet. But it's the vinaigrette that sends me: Red seedless grapes crushed in the blender and combined with bacon, thyme, vinegar and mustard; simply beautiful.
--He's made a rhubarb mignonette for raw oysters, and a bourbon brown butter for baked oysters.
--His idea for curing strawberries in salt and sugar sparks my imagination.
--I've made the Braised Bacon Rice and it is mighty fine.
--And his Bourbon-Ginger-Glazed Carrots is destined for my Thanksgiving table.
--Because my husband doesn't much care for buttermilk, I halved the Buttermilk soup recipe and ate it all myself: Chilled, with maple syrup and tangerine juice, then topped with bourbon-soaked cherries.
--And, a recipe we didn't like: His pimento cheese. We like pickle in ours.

There are braised dishes: Short ribs; brisket with cinnamon, paprika, stout, bourbon and peach preserves; turkey legs with sorghum, cider and fresh sage; Cola Ham Hocks; a pork shoulder with Black BBQ Sauce, and lamb shoulder with bittersweet chocolate. He uses ground meats, too: Piggy Burgers with hoisin sauce and a sun-dried tomato ketchup with brown sugar and soy sauce; a rice bowl with lamb and fresh herbs, and an Asian-flavored chicken sausage to work with an orange-flavored miso remoulade in a rice bowl.

There are essays scattered throughout the book. He talks about a local soy sauce, his favorite fish sauce (from Vietnam), country hams, frying at home, miso, sorghum, buttermilk, goat cheese and (of course) bourbon.
Plus he talks about himself and his escapades and his life experiences. Together the words present a very personable and likable guy--one with a responsible attitude, inquisitiveness and sensitivity. Seems like he likes to drink and party and have fun, too.

The pictures are excellent and interesting, the Resources section is enlightening and very helpful, and the index works very well with the recipes and the way the book is put together.

Wenn man sich mit dem Thema Jugend und der Jugendpolitik der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik auseinandersetzt, so lässt es sich nicht vermeiden, sich auch mit dem Verbot der Beatmusik zu beschäftigen. Konflikte gab es mit den Jugendlichen, die gegen den Strom schwimmen und somit nicht in das vordiktierte Konzept der SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands) hineinpassten.
Im Rahmen dieser Quellenkritik, die sich mit dem Auszug aus dem Bericht von Erich Honecker aus dem Politbüro an das 11. Plenum des ZK der SED vom Dezember 1965 beschäftigt, gilt es einerseits herauszufinden, wie die Reaktionen der DDR- Führung auf die Verbreitung der Beatmusik amerikanischen Vorbilds war und andererseits die tatsächlichen Auswirkungen der Beatklänge auf Heranwachsende der DRR zu untersuchen.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit erscheint es mir wichtig, die Entwicklung von Subkulturen und der Jugendpolitik in den ideologischen und politischen Kontext einzuordnen. Es macht Sinn, die Geschichte der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik aus der Sicht ihrer Jugendgenerationen zu erörtern, da in der DDR die Jugend eine zentrale Rolle gespielt hat.

Zwischen 250.000 bis 300.000 Russlanddeutsche, die in den letzten fünfundzwanzig Jahren nach Deutschland umgesiedelt sind, zählen sich zu den Baptisten oder Mennoniten. Auch wenn nur etwa ein Viertel dieser Personengruppe evangelikale Christen sind, so stellen die russlanddeutschen Kirchengemeinden mit ca. 80.000 Mitgliedern die zweitgrößte freikirchliche Gruppierung des Landes dar. Wenn man das Wachstum der Zahlen der Gemeindemitglieder und Gottesdienstbesucher in den russlanddeutschen Gemeinden untersucht, so stellt man fest, dass sie zu den am schnellsten wachsenden und größten Gemeinden des Landes gerechnet werden können. Sie tragen dadurch zur Veränderung der freikirchlichen Landschaft in Deutschland bei.

Wesentliche Ursachen für die Überlebensfähigkeit dieser Gemeinden trotz der starken Verfolgungen in Russland und in der ehemaligen Sowjetunion, aber auch für das schnelle Wachstum in Deutschland können in ihrer Familienerziehung und Gemeindepädagogik gefunden werden. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist daher, die Kraftquellen dieser Gemeinden aufzuspüren, indem die Gemeindepädagogik der russlanddeutschen Freikirchen in der Spannung zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart dargestellt und beurteilt wird. Abschließend wird unter Berücksichtigung der Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart auf zukünftige Perspektiven hingewiesen, die mir für die russlanddeutschen Freikirchen wichtig sind.
