Enon: A Novel, by Paul Harding

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST NOVELS OF THE YEAR BY
The Wall Street Journal • American Library Association • Kirkus Reviews

A stunning allegorical novel about one man’s enduring love for his daughter

In Enon, Paul Harding follows a year in the life of Charlie Crosby as he tries to come to terms with a shattering personal tragedy. Grandson of George Crosby (the protagonist of Tinkers), Charlie inhabits the same dynamic landscape of New England, its seasons mirroring his turbulent emotional odyssey. Along the way, Charlie’s encounters are brought to life by his wit, his insights into history, and his yearning to understand the big questions. A stunning mosaic of human experience, Enon affirms Paul Harding as “a contemporary master and one of our most important writers” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Harding, a writer preternaturally attuned to the spiraling of time and consciousness, continues the Crosby family story begun in his Pulitzer Prize–winning first novel, Tinkers (2009). Charlie was a solitary boy resistant to the confines of school, ecstatic in nature, and happy in the company of his clock-restorer grandfather, George Crosby. As a husband and father, Charlie loves to read, walk along the Enon River, study the long history of his Massachusetts village, and, best of all, share his passions with his receptive young daughter, Kate. Now all is lost in the shocking tragedy that propels this surreal, apocalyptic odyssey of grief. Writing with ferocious lyricism and macabre vision, Harding lures us deep into Charlie’s memory and dreams, pain and desolation. Over a full cycle of New England seasons, Charlie, afflicted with the self-imposed stigmata of a broken hand and adrift in opiate-induced altered states, descends into squalor, inept criminality, and the terrors of the underworld, enacting his own private dire rituals of mortification and sorrow. Harding’s mythic sensibility, soaring empathy for his devastated yet life-loving protagonist, comedic embrace of the absurd, and exquisite receptivity to the beauty and treachery of the living world make for one astonishingly daring, gripping, and darkly resplendent novel of all-out grief and crawling-from-the-ruins survival. --Donna Seaman

Review
“Harding conveys the common but powerful bond of parental love with devastating accuracy. . . . Enon confirms what the Pulitzer jury decided: Paul Harding—no longer a ‘find’—is a major voice in American fiction.”—Chicago Tribune

“Paul Harding’s novel Tinkers won the Pulitzer Prize; its stunning successor, Enon, only raises the bar.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

“An extraordinary follow-up to the author’s Pulitzer Prize–winning debut . . . Harding’s subject is consciousness rooted in a contemporary moment but bound to a Puritan past. His prose is steeped in a visionary, transcendentalist tradition that echoes Blake, Rilke, Emerson, and Thoreau, and makes for a darkly intoxicating read.”—The New Yorker

“So wild and riveting it’s practically an aria . . . Harding is a superb stylist.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Without blurring the sharply lucid nightmares and recollections, Mr. Harding pushes Charlie’s madness to a crisis point of destruction or renewal. The journey to the depths of his grief is unforgettably stark and sad. But that sadness, shaped by a gifted writer’s caressing attention, can also bring about moments of what Charlie calls ‘brokenhearted joy.’”—The Wall Street Journal

“Harding is an extraordinary writer, for the intoxicating power of his prose, the range of his imagination, and above all for the redemptive humanity of his vision. With painstaking brilliance, Enon charts one man’s attempt to salvage meaning from meaningless tragedy, to endure the ubiquitous presence of a loved one’s absence. A superb account of the banality and uniqueness of bereavement, it more than earns its place alongside such non-fictional classics as Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking and CS Lewis’s A Grief Observed. That Enon is a work of fiction that feels authentic as memoir makes it all the more astonishing.”—Rebecca Abrams, Financial Times

“Enon is Joan Didion’s Blue Nights on major meds. . . . Time was the subject of Tinkers as grief is the subject of Enon. The two are related, like father and sons. Read Enon to live longer in the harsh, gorgeous atmosphere that Paul Harding has created.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Paul Harding’s excellent second novel . . . is a lovely book about grief, the ways in which we punish ourselves for feeling it, and, ultimately, how we rebuild our lives even when they seem unsalvageable.”—New York Daily News

“Harding’s mythic sensibility, soaring empathy for his devastated yet life-loving protagonist, comedic embrace of the absurd, and exquisite receptivity to the beauty and treachery of the living world make for one astonishingly daring, gripping, and darkly resplendent novel of all-out grief and crawling-from-the-ruins survival.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Drawing upon the same New England landscape and family as his Pulitzer Prize–winning debut Tinkers, Harding deftly captures loss and its consequences in this gorgeous and haunting follow-up. . . . Offering an elegiac portrait of a severed family and the town of Enon itself, Harding’s second novel again proves he’s a contemporary master and one of our most important writers.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“As Charlie’s grief reaches its apex, he’s consumed by dark visions, and Harding’s skillful whipsawing of the reader from the surreal to the quotidian is the best writing he’s done.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Paul Harding is one of the more exquisite writers I have read. His book opens each word like a rose. Each word is precisely placed and thought about before it becomes the written word. Paul Harding gives us the most sublime reading, filled with the words and feelings of deep grief. Grief that had to be shared, to be exposed. Deep, wrenching, gut filled grief. Tears came at the loss the author wrote. I hope to never feel this grief again, once was enough.

Charlie lives in Massachusetts, on the North Shore, loves the woods, the birds, the fresh air filled with lush smells. On this day he is walking, wishing his daughter, Kate, was with him, but she wanted to go to the beach with friends. As he arrives at his car, it starts raining and he listens to he messages on his cell phone. His wife has called, and the message she leaves is like no other, "Charlie, Kate is dead. She was hit by a car while riding her bike, come home, immediately!" And, it all goes downhill from here. Tragedy, misery, sleepless nights and days. His wife and her large family from Minnesota, take up some time, but then family leaves. Charlie spends all his time on the couch, in such a profound grief, he cannot move. Once he does move, another incident occurs, and Charlie is without a base. He is a man without a rudder. We go with him into his days and nights. The only thing that keeps this book from becoming one of the most depressing of books is the prose. It is filled with vitality and kept me on track. This is not a book for the faint of heart. I found myself putting the book down, only to pick it back up.

Life goes on, but we don't realize this. It is the day to day life, plodding on, what is the alternative? Paul Harding is a superb writer. Grief needs to be shared and each one of us who continue with 'Enon' (None, spelled backwards) share this grief. I hope it is enough.

Coping (or not) with grief
By TChris
Paul Harding displays the power of his prose in the opening pages of Enon, as Charlie Crosby recalls the death of his daughter. The understated, deeply affecting descriptions of grief set the scene for the life that follows. Charlie blames himself for letting his daughter take the bike ride that ended in a collision with a car. After Charlie's marriage disintegrates, he becomes "a maker of dismal days." He spends them wandering the town of Enon, recalling the sweetness of the family life he has lost, seeing his daughter at different ages when he gazes at the town's children. As the months pass, he moves "deeper into the shade, further toward the border between this life and what lies outside it." He is embarrassed by his weakness, his inability to resolve his sense of loss. He has always believed that "life is not something we are forced to endure, but rather something in which we are blessed to be allowed to participate," but now he feels no gratitude for a life that "felt like nothing more than a distillation of sorrow and anger." He wants to believe that the joy of his daughter's life had its own integrity, that his life is better for having shared his daughter's life, but he measures his grief by the loss of that joy. Abuse of alcohol and pills heightens his condemnation of his failure of character.

While Enon is largely an internal monologue, it features richly developed minor characters: a cemetery caretaker who seems like "an archaic military experiment gone awry"; an elderly woman who fearlessly races down an icy hill on a sled; a poorly paid clerk who pines for his family in India while he spends his Sundays working at a convenience store. It is also a novel of place, the place being Enon, where Crosbys have lived since 1840. Charlie, taking a daily walk around the town, recalls his childhood fears of creepy woods and legendary boogeymen. We learn the history of Charlie's old house with its traces of the people who once lived there, including the grandfather who was instrumental in his life.

What do we do when "broken hearts continue beating"? Is grief a moral failing when it leads to self-destructive, irresponsible behavior? Harding leaves it to the reader to decide. Charlie, on the other hand, receives a lecture from the elderly sledding woman that seems right: at some point, particularly when it causes harm to others, grief can be selfish. There is a moral lesson in Enon, a lesson that Charlie learns about the nature of prolonged grief, about what his grief really is and why he can't release it. Although it isn't immediately apparent, the novel is ultimately redemptive and life-affirming in its perspective of "this awful miracle of a planet" we all share.

Harding's description of Charlie's thoughts, his attempts and inability to come to terms with his daughter's death, are achingly real. Enon is such a howl of pain that it is difficult to read in long stretches. Fortunately, Enon is the perfect length: long enough to tell the story but not so long that Charlie's anguish becomes overbearing. Regardless of its length, Harding's prose, sometimes stunning in its effortless beauty, would have kept me reading. This isn't a novel for readers who wish to disappear into a make-believe world that's filled with sunny characters, but for readers who want to understand the full range of life (including people who have given up on life), Enon is a work of great value.

Great Style with the Wrong Form
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
Immediately upon reading Paul Harding's novel Enon, I could see that I was in the hands of a topnotch writer, a person who scours his prose of any ornamentation and affectation. His writing, always concrete, vivid and earthy, reminds me a lot of one of my favorite writers Jim Harrison, who has published many books which consist of three novellas. I mention this because at close to 240 pages Enon is way too long for the subject matter and plotline: One rainy day in September in New England, the narrator Charlie Crosby is in his car when his wife Susan tells him that their daughter Kate has just been hit by a car and killed on her bicycle. Soon after, Charlie's marriage dissolves and he descends into a bottomless pit of painkiller and alcohol-fueled grief, self-pity, dissolution, dishevelment, disconnection, and solipsism and becomes a walking corpse.

This simple, often fatiguing plotline is expanded by interspersing his narrative descent with flashbacks, mostly between him and his daughter. The end result is a novel that is stagnant, lacks character interest, and screams short story, novella at the very longest. So while I have the highest admiration for Paul Harding's prose, I will have to wait and see if he can solve some of the problems evident in this book.

Proof of Guilt: Barbara Graham and the Politics of Executing Women in America, by Kathleen A. Cairns

Barbara Graham might have been a diabolical dame in a hard-boiled detective story—beautiful, sexy, and deadly. Charged alongside two male friends in the murder of an elderly widow during a botched robbery attempt, “Bloody Babs” became the third woman executed in California—after a 1953 trial that played out before standing-room-only crowds captured the imaginations of journalists, filmmakers, and death penalty opponents. Why, Kathleen A. Cairns asks, of all the capital cases in the twentieth century, did Graham’s have such political resonance and staying power?

Leaving aside the question of guilt or innocence—debated to this day—Cairns examines how Graham’s case became a touchstone in the ongoing debate over capital punishment. While prosecutors positioned the accused woman as a femme fatale, the media came to offer a counternarrative for Graham’s life highlighting her abusive and lonely beginnings. Cairns shows how Graham’s case became crucial to the abolitionists of the time, who used instances of questionable guilt to raise awareness of the arbitrary and capricious nature of death penalty prosecutions. Critical in keeping capital punishment in the forefront of public consciousness until abolitionists homed in on a winning strategy, Graham's case illustrates the power of individual stories to shape wider perceptions and ultimately public policies.

Review
“At a time when states are closely reexamining capital punishment, particularly in light of the Innocence Project’s scathing findings that dozens have been wrongly sent to prison and to Death Row, Kathleen Cairns’s meticulous and moving reprise of the notorious 1950s case of Barbara Graham is a sobering, insightful, and welcome study of why the swift and awful justice of execution is neither swift, nor just, but merely awful.”—Dennis McDougal, author of Privileged Son: Otis Chandler and the Rise and Fall of the L.A. Times Dynasty (Dennis McDougal 2012-09-19)

“Proof of Guilt is a fascinating book that details the case of Barbara Graham and also explores the issue of the execution of women. Although the Graham case occurred decades ago, Cairns brings Barbara Graham back to life in this compelling narrative. The book sheds new light on the issue of the death penalty and dispels many myths and misconceptions surrounding it.”—Gloria Killian, exonerée and coauthor of Full Circle: A True Story of Murder, Lies, and Vindication (Gloria Kill 2012-09-19)

"This outstanding book is a major contribution to the history of the criminal justice system and its limitations."—Gordon Morris Bakken, Montana, The Magazine of Western History (Gordon Morris Bakken Montana, The Magazine of Western History)

The Case of Barbara Graham and Executing Women in America
By Bill Emblom
I decided to purchase this book because I found the movie "I Want to Live" to be fascinating. This book by Kathleen Cairns discussing the case and execution of convicted murderess Barbara Graham in 1953 for the murder of Mable Monahan in Burbank, California, discusses at length whether or not she was or was not the actual murderer.

There is no doubt that Graham came from a very disfunctional family. Her mother had no use for her and Barbara spent much of her short life trying to find love in all the wrong places with the wrong individuals. Author Cairns discusses the roles played by those individuals who were also involved in the Monahan murder who were executed for the crime. Whether or not Graham confessed to the murder is debatable.

A chapter is devoted to the movie entitled "I Want to Live" in which actress Susan Hayward played the role of Barbara Graham. The movie was made as an indictment against capital punishment. Approximately the final half hour of the movie dealt with the execution of Graham and Susan Hayward was absolutely fantastic in her portrayal.

The book concludes with other capital murder cases such as Caryl Chessman in addition to the abolishment and reinstatement of the death penalty. Several cases are listed as to women such as Karla Faye Tucker and Aileen Wuornos who have been executed for their crimes.

I found the book to be a worthwhile read and I would also suggest you purchase the movie "I Want to Live" either prior or after reading this book.

One Woman and the Death Penalty
By jiffy
"I Want to Live!" is one of my favorite movies, and I was bowled over by Susan Hayward's performance. Partly because of the film, I wanted to know more about Barbara Graham and the crime for which she was executed. I had trouble finding books about her, and I was pleased to get this one. It is subtitled "Barbara Graham and the Politics of Executing Women in America," and as such, it goes well beyond Mrs. Graham's story. Roughly the first half of the book deals with her life, the murder of Mable Monahan, and Mrs. Graham's trial, imprisonment, appeals, and execution in San Quentin's gas chamber. The second half discusses the issue of her guilt or innocence, the film "I Want to Live!", women executed in the United States, and the death penalty itself. The author does not take a position on Barbara Graham's guilt, but she certainly raises reasonable doubt. Neither does she formally oppose the death penalty, but she makes it clear that she doesn't like it. The chapter on women who have been executed tells each story in only a few sentences, but the relentless accounts of one person after another who was put to death are emotionally overwhelming. I also was distressed by stories of governors deciding whether to commute or execute, not because of the facts of the case but because of the effect on their own reelections. I know this isn't exactly news, but it's still disturbing. This book is factual, logical, and emotional, all at the same time. You don't have to be opposed to capital punishment to find it moving and enlightening. If you have any interest at all in the subject, it's definitely worth reading.

Read it for it's gender and capital punishment discussion, not the Barbara Graham case.
By EdCalifornia
The author concludes that narrative is effective in shaping public opinion and that the potential execution of an innocent person is a compelling argument against capital punishment. She also gives a cogent review of the role gender has played and continues to play in capital cases and the ongoing death penalty debate. Much of the public narrative of this case has been provided by the movie "I Want to Live," in which Barbara Graham is portrayed as most likely innocent. What if the narrative isn't true? Does it matter? What about the legalities surrounding the case that, combined with her own actions, put Barbara Graham in the gas chamber? This last subject is almost never discussed anywhere, and this book avoids it entirely, as well as most details of the crime and its investigation. Any discussion of the death penalty should involve what criminals have actually done; not what a movie director, news reporter, political activist or college professor intimates they have done. Only then can a voter or juror faced with the subject make an intelligent and compassionate decision.

Firstly, there is the principle of equal culpability in a murder and home invasion. As a Principal in the crime, the accused does not have to be the person wielding the actual murder weapon to be guilty of murder. The District Attorney only had to prove Graham was a principal, in other words, a participant with the intent to do harm and that a murder occurred as a result. The author states that Graham's guilt may never be known, but Graham admitted on a wire recording to being at the scene when she attempted to purchase a false alibi from a police detective. A state's witness, John True, was an eyewitness (and accomplice given immunity) to the crime. These two pieces of evidence, revealed in the book no less, refute the author's own claim that the case was entirely circumstantial.

However, the truth in this case makes for an even more interesting and compelling story. Beyond Graham's tragic background, high IQ, street smarts and good looks, she was offered a deal, most likely immunity though the details weren't formalized, and in deference to the criminal code against squealing, she turned it down. This was her first legal misstep that lead her to the death house. At the time, capital trials were not bifurcated as the author correctly points out, so there was no separate penalty phase. It did not help that she was tried with two vicious accomplices. She also confessed to a cellmate, who was given a reduced sentence for her testimony. There is no right to privacy in jail. The cellmate was replaced by an undercover policewoman, who set up the false alibi sting operation. While the author asks why the District Attorney was so "desperate" to prosecute Graham, there are several answers, one being that Graham gave him no choice. After the conviction, Graham's appeals ran out and she was executed. She did admit that she would rather die than serve a lengthy prison sentence and she got her wish. The author covers the appeals process extensively, and does refer to the overall story of what actually happened; that at the very least, Graham was the shill who got the victim, Mrs. Mabel Monahan, to open the door to her house under the false pretense that her car was not running and that she needed to call the auto club.

The gender implications in the crime itself are at least as interesting as the death penalty discussion. For example, Mrs. Monahan might not have been selected as a victim had she not been an elderly female. Graham would not been selected as a shill had she not been an attractive woman, and an experienced gambling shill at that. Woman are often used by police and criminals alike to open doors. There are also stereotypes about woman and cars, and this was used effectively by the criminals. Ironically, Graham was often at the wheel while the gang was driving around Los Angeles planning the crime, or according to undocumented sources, kidnapping and murdering the first state's witness, Baxter Shorter, a safe cracker and accomplice who disappeared while the case was being assembled by the police, never to be seen again. The book devotes just a few lines to Shorter and his disappearance.

Yet, Graham's case is still compelling because it is about a troubled person, not legally insane, but according to the psychiatrist who evaluated her, possessing a personality disorder and moral ambivalence. Combined with Heroin addiction, the drug given the name of a female hero because it was supposed to wean addicts off Morphine, Graham was either numb or experiencing withdrawal while committing the crime. Money to buy the drug was the motive, and her subsequent search for it lead police to her arrest. Under the law, drug use might be a reason, but not an excuse, for murder. To the author's credit, she goes through in great detail Graham's alleged confession to Warden Harley Teets at San Quentin that she did pistol-whip Mrs. Monahan. Mrs. Monahan made the mistake of crying out and was killed in an effort to silence her. She was beaten and strangled and she took a long time to die. The two accomplices with whom Graham was tried participated extensively in this grisly process, and were convicted of the Monahan murder, as well as other murders in California. Both were executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin. I hope the authorities in my town are just as "desperate" to prosecute home invaders and murderers, the death penalty notwithstanding.

Today, although the death penalty is legal in California, Graham's trial might have been bifurcated, and more importantly, her lack of a violent history would have probably taken the death penalty off the table. The author correctly posits that her gender might have helped her as well. Graham most likely would have gotten what she wanted the least; a long prison sentence.

Depraved world + Magic = Awesome
By PaperFury
Thank you to Random House Aus for the review-copy!

This is a magical book! Literally. It reads like a dystopian (a world of extreme poverty with a tyrannical king, but modern technology), but magical powers are a way of life. That mixture of dystopian + magic = awesome.

The premise was awesome! Premises make up a good 50% of the adoration factor, for me. There’s a billion books about kids who go on a journey to a mythical “paradise”. But most books don’t have over-sized foxes, alchemy bombs, a smart-mouthed pick-pocket, and the ability to create illusions. THAT is why Chasing The Valley stands apart. It sets up an awesome world, but better yet – the world-building increases in epic-ness as the book continues! That, ladies, gentlemen, and aliens, is really good writing.

The plot, on the other hand…meh, not so good. Like I said, you’ve probably read a Journey story a hundred times. Particularly in fantasy. I think the premise and world-building were good enough to stop the plot from being boring…buuut, to be honest, sometimes it dragged. The chapters never ended with cliff-hangers. I was COMFORTABLE the whole time. That’s bad! There wasn’t a pull keep-reading-keep-reading, because I knew nothing hair-raising would happen. It’s a safe read. So, while I kind of enjoyed that (relaxing, okay?), my attention was never 100% caught.

The magic rocked. It was solid! I love it when something fantastical like that is a way of life. There’s no oh-my-gosh-squee-I’m-sixteen-and-therefore-will-discover-I-can-fly/shoot balls of flame/be invisible/have perfect hair. Everyone has a “proclivity”, and it matures when they’re 18. It can be Beast, or Darkness, or Bird, or Fire. Cool stuff. It varied from the usual (ice/fire/water/air sort of stuff). The world-building is just epic. Honest! It is.

Also: HUMOUR! This book is stinking funny. The dialogue? Gorgeous. I could hug it.

Characters? Because it’s a journey, there’s a crew of escaping teens: Danika (narrator), Teddy Nort (pick pocket), Randor (leader), Maisy and Clementine (the rich, snobby twins), aaaaaand Lukas (mysterious gorgeous boy). There’s lots of personalities and they all clash really well. That’s a good thing! The dialogue is awesome. Clementine and Dankia like to have a go at each other every three sentences, and Teddy is HILARIOUS. Laugh-out-loud style. My only problem was with Danika. As a narrator, I expected more from her. She was awesome: street savvy, humorous, tough, and (sometimes) kind. Buuuut, she didn’t grow. I wanted to see her character mature/change/grow by the end of the book. Nope. Nuffin’.

Honestly? I liked this book a lot. But I didn’t love it. It had nearly everything I demand in a book (good dialogue, good writing, excellent premise, humour), but it just didn’t evoke the feels.

The first in a fun filled adventure trilogy!
By Brenda Telford
Danika Glynn was sixteen; alone after her parents and sibling had been killed in the last round of alchemy bombs the king had launched, she struggled for survival. She knew she had to join the king’s army when she turned eighteen – everyone did – but she was determined not to. After all, it was on the king’s orders that her family had been killed; why would she help him to kill others? On the night the bombs struck again, Danika fled to the sewers. It was the only place to be safe from the bombs and the after effects of fire – but there were other refugees sheltering there as well. When she was rejected by the crew of refugees in hiding, she decided to attempt a daring escape. Escape over the city’s walls would mean either death or freedom; a tentative freedom at best, but the lure of the Magnetic Valley was enough to spur her on.

In the frantic scramble over the wall, Danika fired a flare to distract the guards – the consequences of this action were long reaching and meant that she was suddenly a fugitive. But when she joined other refugees their determination to survive was greater than anything any of them had encountered before. With their magical proclivities to help in times of crisis - some were yet to mature – they managed to stay one step ahead of the king’s cruel hunters. But could it remain that way? They were only a group of teenagers; they had no idea who they could trust…

Would the small group of young refugees manage to find their way to the Magnetic Valley? Would they even be safe in the Valley if they did achieve their goal, or was it just a myth that the king couldn’t penetrate that area? One thing Danika knew for sure – they could no longer return to the only home they had ever known…

This is the first in the Chasing the Valley trilogy by Aussie author Skye Melki-Wegner; a fantasy/young adult novel which is full of action and adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed it – it was a fun read with an unlikely heroine. Danika is full of grit and determination and her new friends are the same. I actually purchased the second in the trilogy on finishing this one – I need to find out what happens next! Highly recommended.

GIMME A FOXARY
By Nara Lee
Fast paced and action packed, Chasing the Valley was quite a nice, fast read. From the very start, intrigue is built around the world and the characters, and, as the reader, you're constantly wondering what's going to happen next. The book was quite enjoyable overall, however, I do have to say there were a few minor issues with the world building that perhaps very slightly lowered my enjoyment of the novel (to be honest I'm just being overly nitpicky, but I like my world building to be detailed).

The idea of "proclivities" was rather interesting. If you haven't read the book before, if someone has a proclivity in a particular element/thing it just means that their power is to do with that thing (oh, ever so eloquent, Nara haha). Anyway, for example, one proclivity is Beast. This means that you can understand and command animals. The thing I would have liked explained though, are the smaller details about proclivities. Can I specialise in anything? Anything at all? Like, can it be Cloud, or Tree or something? And why is it that it's taboo to show others your proclivity before you're 18? I feel this wasn't really explained properly. Also, there were these charms which were objects imbued with magic- these really weren't explained either. How are they made? Do they ever run out? I just feel that the world building was slightly shaky because these sorts of questions weren't answered. Perhaps they'll be answered in sequels.

In terms of the world building in general, though, I think it was pretty good overall. It wasn't absolutely amazing, but it was definitely enough to be enjoyable! I quite liked the idea of magic being negated by magnets- which is why the main characters are searching for the Magnetic Valley- the safe haven where the King and his hunters cannot reach them. Also, another thing I loved were the foxaries- these were basically massive foxes that people ride around on. FRICK YES GIVE ME ONE NOW.

I feel like people who like reading books just for the romance wouldn't necessarily like this book. I mean, there was a bit of romance thrown in, but it definitely wasn't the focus of the novel. Which was appropriate and definitely was the way I like it. The focus was much more so on adventure and magic and finding the Magnetic Valley, which I feel is reasonable.

I unfortunately did see the "twist" coming from a mile away- come on, it was so obvious! But it was still nice that one aspect of the twist was something I hadn't expected (although that was more so simply because I hadn't thought about that particular aspect- gah trying not to be spoilery). I also laugh at how the blurb says the "mysterious" Lukas, because, seriously, there is hardly anything mysterious about that kid. It was so glaringly obvious who he is...I really liked him as a character though! It was very interesting to see how the relationship between him and Danika is slowly built up.

The ending was cut off at quite a nice point. It wasn't exceptionally cliffhangery, but there was still definitely the promise of more to come (e.g. the King hasn't been dealt with yet.) I will definitely be reading sequels and look forward to seeing how Melki-Wegener will further develop her characters and her world!

STIR: Spiritual Transformation In Relationships, by Mindy Caliguire

In the past, church leaders have turned to small groups or other kinds of discipleship programs to encourage spiritual growth in their churches.  Yet despite good intentions, the deeper spiritual life and transformation they had hoped for remained elusive.  STIR calls church leaders to reclaim an essential, biblical truth—that the process of spiritual growth is more than a one-size-fits-all program, it happens best through intentional relationships with others in the body of Christ.

Three distinct, sequential stages of spiritual development typically occur as people mature in their spiritual walk with Christ, and they need different kinds of relationships to support their growth through those different seasons. STIR describes those stages—learning together, journeying together, and following together—and shows how progress into and through these stages is best made in the context of relationships that change in nature over time.

Readers will learn how to intentionally establish and strengthen the unique kinds of relationships that are catalytic for growth at each stage of their journey. Church leaders will come away with a new paradigm for encouraging spiritual formation in their local church by providing appropriate encouragement and support to people at all stages of growth.

One of the best guides for relational discipleship I have ever read.
By jdb
It’s probably a great indicator of where my head and heart are in this season of life, but I’m giving this book a 5-Star rating and I’m positive it will be on my Top-Ten List of books read in my 2013 reading year.

It was the summer of 2009 in San Antonio, TX at the Renovare’ International Conference that I first met Mindy Caliguire. She was leading a workshop on the topic of Soul Care and I was anxious to learn all I could learn about this art and nurture of the spirit. In the years to follow, I would immerse myself fully into the apprenticeship of becoming spiritually formed in the image of Christ and learning what it means to be a spiritual companion to others… how to help others in the guidance of their soul. Soul Care became a way of life for me. I count Mindy Caliguire as one of the persons instrumental in helping to point me on the way (although I’m sure she is not aware of this). Now, almost five years later, I’m certified as a spiritual director and teach others in the ways of soul care and spiritual formation… all the while I continue to grow in my own journey.

Much of what I have written thus far has to do with my excitement and delight with STIR. My Christian experience has been largely formed in the Protestant Evangelical tradition where there has not been a large emphasis on the deep nurture of the soul. Consequently, as an ordained minister and certified spiritual director, I have realized a great need for this attention to soul care in the churches where I have been a part. The challenges I have encountered in my experience have been many, but one common question that arises is, “How do we change our existing programming?” There is no simple answer to this question and it isn’t as easy as just “bolting” on another class or small group ministry. This is where Mindy Caliguire’s STIR: Spiritual Transformation In Relationships shines so brightly.

STIR is about life together, faith together, and seeking Jesus Christ together or as Mindy as subdivided the book; Learning Together, Journeying Together, and Following Together. Mindy has extensive experience with her subject matter, serving on the executive board of Willow Creek, contributing to several leadership and spiritual care journals, and authoring several books on the topic of spiritual formation. As I mentioned earlier, she is also a well-respected speaker at spiritual formation-care conferences as well. In this book, STIR, Mindy has crafted a well-reasoned response to the findings of the REVEAL survey commissioned by the Willow Creek Association in 2007. REVEAL is an extensive and ongoing spiritual life research study that consists of survey responses from over 1,600 churches, representing 480,000 individual surveys taken in five countries. Among other things, the REVEAL study showed that more than 25 percent of those surveyed described themselves as spiritually stalled or dissatisfied with the role of the church in their spiritual growth (more information on REVEAL Spiritual Life Survey can be found at [...]

Caliguire outlines Spiritual Transformation In Relationships by categorizing the development of transformation in three distinct stages. In stage one, Learning Together, new believers enter into the initial stage of discipleship where they develop a firm foundation on which they can keep growing for the rest of their lives. She says, “In this stage, believers learn some important ‘rules of the road.’” This stage of learning is highly directive and includes instruction of Scripture, core beliefs, and ways of relating to God and others. It has been my experience, limited as it may be, that many people I have met in my Protestant Evangelical community do not move past this first stage of learning together. Caliguire has something to say about this…

“When individuals or whole churches get stuck in the Learning Together stage, everyone suffers. When they’re stuck, people can end up doing these three things: (1) become arrogant about what they’ve learned (to the point of harming the cause of Christ), (2) give up on any hope of growth and change, or (3) remain immature (p. 57).

In Part Two of the book, she moves into the description of the second stage of STIR or Journeying Together and it is here that the reader (or journey-er) is introduced to the exercises of spiritual formation. The significance of this stage of development in the spiritual formation process, writes Caliguire, “happens as disciples of Jesus take ownership of two very important immaterial things: (1) their day-by-day life with God, and (2) their interior world, including their journey.” Mindy continues her thought with the following words:

“Those who make this transition can become deep, centered individuals who are marked by increased humility, spiritual power, and natural expression of the character qualities of Jesus. Those who do not make this transition, sadly, remain locked into acquiring head knowledge about God but do not develop the capacity to be shaped by God. There are no shortcuts, but interior transformation is absolutely the goal” (p.66).

Chapter five begins the third section of the book and introduces Following Together, defined as follows:

“Growing to maturity in Christ, our goals is to run with perseverance and be ready to throw off anything that gets in the way of that unique race God has marked out for us… therefore, we need running mates who run beside us. Now in this final stage, we need companions who will help us stay the course in at least three key areas: (1) cultivating ongoing awareness of the inner journey, (2) practicing ongoing abandonment to God’s purposes, and (3) staying connected to others. These will serve as our goals of the Following Together stage of spiritual growth” (p.114).

Part Three was most assuredly my favorite part of the book; specifically, chapter six “blew my doors off” with the depth of wisdom shared in it. This was, for me, a very important chapter. Spiritual Direction or Spiritual Companionship is the key concept introduced and expounded upon in these later chapters. Because this style of ministry and relationship is so dear and close to me, I’m sure it is why I was so drawn to it, but regardless of my bias, I am sure it will be teaching that will resonate with the heart and experience of many others.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have had many conversations with people sharing a similar spiritual experience as my own; I am convinced there are others who are missing this deep relational connection with others in their ongoing Christian journey. This book will not have all the answers; human beings and life are far too complex to summarize a one-size-fits-all cure in a 185 page book; however, STIR is a great response to challenges many of us have experienced. It is certainly worth the read and definitely worth considering as a possible shift in how we live and relate together as disciples of Jesus Christ seeking whole life transformation and full reclamation of the image God intended for his people.

More to be Said
By lovedrunkbliss
I'm not exactly sure who this book is for. It is too insider and leader oriented to be for actual small groups. Yet it is too incomplete to train a leader on how to direct and disciple from the lens this book provides. It provides a great, general, ecumenical approach to relational formation. The author is honest, knowledgeable, and humble. I just wish she elaborated and gave us the depth she teases us with here or there.

I hope there is a book 2 and I hope it is both more applicable and deeper.

A Helpful Model for Christian Spiritual Formation
By Benjamin A. Simpson
Mindy Caliguire is a leading voice in the area of Christian spiritual formation. She writes with clarity and passion. In her book STIR: Spiritual Transformation in Relationships, Caliguire helps us to understand three basic elements in the spiritual journey that can help church leaders think through how we create contexts where people move toward maturity in Christ.

Caliguire identifies three distinct phases as we grow: Learning Together, Journeying Together, and Following Together. In the first stage, we discover the basics of the Christian faith. We learn the Bible, acquire a theological vocabulary, and are taught very simple practices, such as prayer. We establish relationships with others that are highly directive--we rely on others to show us the way, pointing us to Christ. As those just beginning, we need a foundation that is solid and dependable. We need to learn.

Once the foundation is set, we transition to Journeying Together. We find other Christian friends who are walking alongside us, committing themselves to the cause, and providing us with both direction and discernment. We are being taught, but we are also listening with others, discovering the will of God for us, in our lives as they unfold. This phase might be bolstered by participation in a community group, a small fellowship, or as part of a retreat.

Maturity leads us to a place of Following Together. Having gained foundational knowledge, faced obstacles, and increased in our love for God, we have now become steadfast. We're running the race. As Caliguire writes, the primary goal of this stage is to keep going. We act as God has called us to act, and we invite others along. We impart the wisdom that we've gained, and we remain faithful to the end.

At each stage, Caliguire helps church leaders to identify where we might find ourselves, and how to break through when we feel stuck. She describes what someone ministering in each stage might possess in terms of giftedness, the makeup of their character, and what their next steps might be. Caliguire's model is meant to establish a frame for a church ministry, calling people within that ministry to identify where they are on the journey, and to find a place where they are challenged to step forward as they continue to follow Christ. The entire model, being relational, requires not only participants, but leaders.

As far as model books go, this is a good one. It clearly expresses basic principles and key narratives that lead to the creation of environments that are conducive to formation in Christlikeness. If you're familiar with contemporary writings on Christian spiritual formation, you won't be surprised with new information in this book, but you will be helped by the clarity Caliguire brings to the application of these ideas to the local church. Her emphasis on the relational side of formation, of the essential aspect of community, is a needed balance, considering some spiritual formation literature focuses primarily on individual practices.

But the book is not without a couple of shortcomings. First, I think there is a great deal of overlap between the ideas of Journeying Together and Following Together, and while I do find Caliguire's shades or degrees of maturity somewhat illuminating, the division here, in my mind, is rather small. Perhaps this is a limitation in myself as the reader, and not in Caliguire's presentation. But if I understand her correctly, the Journeying phase is where our commitment is deepened and our focus is established. During this period, we have set our mind on Christ, and we are determined to pass through any obstacle, even the challenge of the desert, to remain faithful to him. But once we transition to the Following Together stage, our primary goal is to stay the course. We're to remain with it. Everything that was established in the second phase of the model is solidified in the third. We cultivate our inward life, we commit ourselves to God's purpose, and we bind ourselves more fully to our company of Christians. There is a division, perhaps, but it is very fine, and I'm not sure how I'd fully apply these distinctions if I was developing my own model or asking those who I lead to locate themselves within this framework.

As a second desire, I would've liked one example of how a local church has put the STIR model in to practice. An appendix with a narrative description of a single person's growth, and the relationships that were most helpful, would've created a fuller picture. If there are programs that have been used to foster the kinds of relationships Caliguire describes, I would've enjoyed a description of how those settings made an impact. While Caliguire provides examples of contexts where the stages can be experienced, I would've liked to see those elements compacted in to a single narrative.

But however significant these shortcomings were for me personally, they do not negate the value of the book. If you're a church leader who is seeking to apply principles of Christian spiritual formation to your context, Caliguire is an instructive and clear voice. She gives you much to consider, and forces you to establish a narrative frame within which those you lead can find themselves. She knows and understands that the Christian life is a growth process, and that maturity does not come overnight. I'm thankful that Caliguire helps us to see that there is movement within our own spiritual journeys, and with God's help, there is progress. As church leaders, we are called to show others the way, to help those we pastor and shepherd to discover God's grace, and to fully rely on his power for transformation. Oftentimes, the vehicle through which God brings our greatest challenges is found in the lives of other people--change comes directly through relationships.

I've already introduced these ideas in my student ministry, and they'll continue to serve as a sub-current running beneath our efforts. Check it out.
