Nelson discovered a love for telling stories when her oldest child began to demand them at times when reading someone else’s stories out of a book was not possible. “The Zebra Says Shh”is her first published story, and is the story she tells most often, telling it almost every night at bedtime. She lives in San Diego with her husband and two children.

This is a charming bedtime story of the animals at the zoo who didn't want to go to sleep ...

The Zebra stood in his field at the zoo listening to all the other animals. It wasn't time for talking because "it was bedtime at the zoo." He stood quietly listening and then said, "Shhh, it's time to go to sleep." Ah, but the animals didn't want to go to sleep. The monkeys swung to and fro in the trees and said, "ooo, ooo, ooo." Nope, they didn't want to go to sleep. The lion looked out from his den as the stars began to twinkle in the sky. "Raar," he exclaimed to all who could hear him. Nope, he didn't want to go to sleep. Zebra, who was very tired, exclaimed, "Shhh, it's time to go to sleep."

The parrot fluttered in the trees, flapping his beautiful feathers all the while talking. "Squawk, Squawk." Nope, she didn't want to go to sleep either. And then there were the turtles who said, "snap, snap" as they ambled around in the grass. There were the seals who splished and splashed in their pond as they played. "Ar, ar." Nope the turtles and the seals didn't want to go to sleep. "Shhh, it's time to go to sleep," exclaimed the zebra once again. The stars were twinkling and it was bedtime at the zoo, but was anyone going to be quiet so the zebra could get some sleep?

This is a charming bedtime story of the animals at the zoo who didn't want to go to sleep. Much as he tried, zebra could not get all the animals to be quiet, but eventually, like all little children do, they managed to go to sleep one by one. The tale was almost lyrical as the zebra kept repeating his request and saying "shhh." The artwork was very colorful and charming as it depicted those not-so-sleepy critters who just couldn't fall asleep. I think my favorite was the hippopotamus who decided rolling in the mud was infinitely more fun than going to sleep. If you have a little one who just isn't into going to sleep, this is a perfect bedtime story to lull him or her to sleep!

Works like sleep medicine for 3 to 5 year olds

Our twins - currently 3-and-a-half - used to take ages to get to sleep. We even tried "natural" medicines like Melatonin, and while that worked great in helping them go to sleep in 15 minutes or so, we found them waking up middle of the night with left over energy from before they went to sleep.

The best way seemed to be to let them fall asleep themselves, rather than forcing their bodies to do so. Falling asleep themselves meant calming down internally, and there was no "left over energy" to wake them up middle of the night.

We tried music, then books, then the Kindle readers on our tablets - as the books got damaged, lost, or generally unavailable at bedtime.

After randomly trying out many Kindle books for 3-5 year age range, we gravitated towards the Lily Lemon Blossom series, and then this book - "The Zebra Says Shhhh" - and another very similar book -"Good Night Little Turtle".

Lily Lemon Blossom books are great to capture their attention and get them lying down and listening / looking at the books on tablet readers.

The Good Night Little Turtle and/or Zebra Says Shhhh are heavy artillery that come out once the kids are calmed down - or about 1 to 2 Lily Lemon books down the line.

Both of these books have the same theme - reiterating the fact that the animals are going off to sleep on about every other page.

The kids seem to love this. The animals in the zoo are all restless, just like them, and then the Zebra comes in and shush-es each one of them, and then suddenly they are all asleep. This is about the midpoint of the book. Then we go into each pen and see the animals all sleeping as appropriate for them. By the time we come to the Zebra falling asleep, the kids are usually knocked out.

I've rarely had to read this book twice. I have no idea how it works, but this is amazing.

Shhhhh keep reading Mommy!

I read this with my 6 year old son, and he adored it. He enjoyed playing guess what comes next. The illustrations are beautiful, the story is capturing for a young child, and its fun. You can predict the "shhh" part to read with your child and it becomes a game. Simple, fun, magical, and capturing are words I would use to describe the book. Greatly enjoyed!

Poorly revised book with bad samples

This is a fairly good book for the simplicity of learning HTML and CSS, however as you go further along the book. There are many problems with the sample codes provided, especially within the Javascript. This is a very new book (April 2013). The book is not outdated, so it is not acceptable to have bad sample codes for such a big portion of the book. The error in samples has caused me to resort in google searches for proper instruction, which is quite redundant as I bought this book to avoid learning of the web. Bottom line: if you don't mind the non-working sample codes in the book and are willing to search online to compensate, then you can give this book a try.

Errors in sample code

Good overview, easy to read, but definitely could use some proof reading. There are errors in the sample code provided in what could have been the neatest part of the book, how to create a members only website. To top it off, the site they give at the beginning of the book for technical updates is a dud.

You can't really provide a programming book with sample code, that has errors in it, and expect people to want to purchase it. There's a lot of other good options out there too. Good thing I purchased them at the same time as this book, so I could reference those instead. If this book gets proofed and updates released, I'd consider changing my review.

A Macro file base for procedural cohesiveness

There are tips in each chapter that you won't get from college professors on web sites and other issues.
You'll need too know how one language interacts with the others and where stumbling blocks are to be advoided. This book inter-links these topics by saying you'll find that out in the next book in this series etc.HTML>CSS>JavaScript>PHP>APACHE........

My four-year-old daughter spent six very intense months convinced she would grow up to be a "bug scientist." I gathered these poems, and wrote one of my own, in an attempt to add to the library of scientific texts we amassed in her hunt for anything bug-related. I've learned to love the creepy, crawly creatures even though her future aspirations have turned toward the cowgirl-astronaut variety.

Although he is not sure what a bug is exactly, he still loves the pictures and stories about animals and bugs. Whenever we are together he wants to look at a book on Papa's iPad. I of course, love to indulge him.

This is a book of thirty-one poems about bugs. These range from nursery rhymes we remember as a child, “Little Miss Muffet”, to those I was not familiar with. Read wonderful poems by well known poets like Emily Dickinson and John Keats. This is a great book to share with your children or grand-children.

Something completely different from the author of the popular, ever-so-British Inspector Jury mysteries (The Old Contemptibles, etc.). This time the setting is small-town America, the mystery is secondary (a psycho serial-killer of sporadic interest), and the emphasis instead is on earnest character-studies that never quite add up. The primary character under scrutiny is Maud Chadwick, a divorc‚e in her late 40s who works as a diner waitress in sleepy La Porte, a town somewhere considerably ``up north'' from N.Y.C. Maud, dreamy and depressed, spends her free time obsessing about son Chad, 20, whose increasing adult-ness and separate-ness devastate her. She whiles away her summer evenings sitting at the end of her backyard pier--fantasizing about the rich summerfolk who party across the lake, puzzling over Wallace Stevens's poetry, and chatting (edgily yet amiably) with La Porte's sheriff, Sam DeGheyn, himself lonely in his lousy marriage to unfaithful Florence. Sam, meanwhile, has his own obsession: the savage murders of four local ``loose women'' over the past few years, crimes not solved to Sam's satisfaction (despite the conviction of young ``Boy'' Chalmers for some of the killings). And indeed Grimes introduces us, without naming names, to the real psycho-killer, through run-of-the-mill interior monologues. She also interjects--with far less coherence-- a long episode in which young Chad visits the stately home of a decadent college-pal and gets entangled in the family's glitzy, dreary pathology. (This section reads like a watery American imitation of Brideshead Revisited.) At its best, atmospheric psychological suspense reminiscent of L.R. Wright. At its worst, a pretentious mishmash: though linked by a theme (parent-child relationships), the pieces don't fit satisfyingly together--and Maud's ultra-sensitivity has limited appeal. A disjointed effort

I liked the earlier Hotel Paradise, apart from the deliberately obscure ending. This novel, featuring the same locale and at least one character, was disappointing in a different way. It reads like a first draft, and although the ending is understandable, there are a lot of unanswered questions left pending, particularly about the motivations of the various characters.

A pleasant non-masterpiece

This is a standard mystery/suspense novel with one or two diverting ideas. Maude, the heroine, has some quirky thoughts which she tries to share with sheriff Sam. But Sam is a standard linear-thinking male who finds Maude's ideas perplexing. Their conversations toward the begininning of the book were for me the most interesting part of the novel. Unfortunately, once the action starts, Grimes pretty much drops the conversational sparring between Maude and Sam. This is just one example if the disjointedness mentioned by a previous reviewer. Many pages of the novel seem mostly unrelated to the mystery itself. So it is not a well-constructed mystery, but it is pleasant enough, with no obvious giveaway of the ultimate solution. It ends with one of those annoying long speeches by the guilty party, explaining to the intended final victim just how all the previous murders had been committed, and speaking just long enough for the cavalry to arrive. But this one has a slightly different twist to it. If you're a Grimes fan or just looking for a lazy way to pass some time, this is worth reading.

Dysfunctional

This was the first book (may well be the last) that I have read by Ms. Grimes and the title of my review pretty well sums up the entire book--dysfunctional. The book gets off to an extremely slow start and the slow beginning sets the plodding pace of the entire book. Within this book, there does not appear to be a single, solitary character that is not psychotic in one aspect or another; every individual seems to be suffering a mental imbalance in one way or another. Also, she really doesn't 'flesh out' her characters in any other way except for their aberrations and as societal misfits. The entire book seemed to be disjointed. It was as if every time Ms. Grimes was interrupted while writing, she would lose her train of thought and have to start off from a new line of thought when she could begin again. As for her chosen killer psychopath, very little was written to develop the killer's character; and there was a failure to demonstrate the motivation of the killer. Although the killer was depicted as being in more or less of a mesmerized state during the killing process, at least one murder was out of character as it definitely required forethought and planning ahead for the provision of an alibi during the time of the killing. Another failure in this book was the sporadic insertion of expletives and obscenities throughout the book for no apparent reason other than a lack of the english language to be able to adequately express herself. It seemed as if not one character in her book was able to speak without using an obscenity or two. This is not so in actual life.

This is one book that, even though I bought it at a greatly reduced price, I rue having purchased it at all. About the only thing that this book is fit for is to be shredded and used as mulch in my flower garden; but I am not even certain it will be any good for that. If I may suggest, if you have money to spend on a book, make another choice other than this book or just save your money and your time.

What a cool way to teach kids who are very young but loves mysteries?

I think this is a very cool way to teach some very young kids how to count from 1-10 with using the tools that a spy or detective may use in their line of work. So, I would like to recommend this ebook for five stars and as I said for 2-6.

Loved this book! Secret Agent Josephine is awesome.

This book is great for a pre-schooler/older toddler, especially little girls who want to be secret agents! My daughter loved all the gadgets that are shown, and imagining how she would use them on her own missions. She has started kindergarten since we've had this book, and still loves it. She can count it out by herself, so even though she can't read, she doesn't need me to read. She loves this book!

Finally! At long last someone has said what has needed to be said. One brave soul has trumpeted it from the rooftops. Forget about the Iraq War with their hundreds of thousands of innocents dead. Remove your mind from worrisome drone strikes hitting children and families in Afghanistan. Our returning soldiers--battered, maimed, wounded in every human way possible, and now, most likely jobless, could not have returned from a more glorious conflict than the War on Christmas. This annual melee, swift on the heels of the Satanic orgy of demon-worship and candy corn that is Halloween, should be front and center on the radar of every God-loving, red-blooded American. While women line up for their holiday abortions and those godless gays don their stylish gay apparel, Mrs. Palin has reminded us that the fight for Christmas is the fight for our very souls. As the Pilgrims exchanged gifts with the Indians, as Paul Revere rode up and down that night to warn us of the British plans to take our guns and Christmas trees, and as Ronald Reagan reminded the Soviets when he said, "Mr. Gorbachev, it's 'Merry Christmas!", so we must take a stand against the liberazis who intend to topple the entire edifice of Western Civilization through their insistence on wishing one and all a "Happy Holiday." Being a Christian nation, the celebration of the Divine Child born in Bethlehem that cold, snowy night is the cornerstone of our republic and our society--certainly not the anti-family liberal aggrandizement of unwed teenage mothers or families with two dads. There really is another War on Christmas coming soon!

Having lost my left eye in the First War on Christmas, it takes me a while to get through books. It took me even longer than normal to get through this one, however, because of the post traumatic stress disorder and flashbacks that it inspired. Picture yourself in my shoes, there on the battlefields of the Paramus Mall, the mist rising off the fields that but days before were fertile farmland, now smoldering in the aftermath of egg nog bombs and fruitcake.

What's that sound? Incoming peppermint strike! The second one this morning. I dive underneath the nearest open sleigh just as the gingerbread mortars rained hellfire down on me and my platoon. Sons of bitches! The psy-ops teams are playing that godless Rudolph song through our comms radios. Damn you, Saturnalia! A gingerbread hits my buddy Ricky just to my right and he drops in a quivering heap. Riiiiiiiiky! NooooooO!

I peek out behind the bough of a douglas fir and there.... I see it. Do you see it? Approaching on the horizon and rising out of the mist. So this is how it ends, eh, Claus? This is how you want to play? Fine. I can take so much, but I'm not going to die here on a frosted field, lights twinkling above me, without a final fight. I grab my tube of wrapping paper and charge out from my hiding spot, and a white-hot sensation rips through my skull. The tinsel! The tinsel! Arrrrrgh.

Sorry.... need to focus on the here and now. For those of you who say there's no war on Christmas, I can only say that you don't know... you can't know... unless you were there. For those of us who survived, though broken and emptied of our humanity, it was all too real.

It's my favorite time of year again! It comes earlier every year and grows in strength every time. Is it Thanksgiving? No. Christmas? Closer.

It's the War on Christmas, that festive time of year when we reflect on the true meaning of making sure other people know there is a war against Christmas.

What would you say is the greatest threat to the greatest of holidays Jesus gave to us? Is it over-commercialisation, which Charlie Brown was complaining about back in the '60s? Or the fact that Christmas shopping next year will start just after St. Patrick's Day? Or just the general un-Christmas like behavior of people fighting for parking spaces and hot new toys at the mall while ignoring their families at home?

If you answered any of the above three, you're probably one of those godless liberals who need this book. No my friend, the answer of course is those atheists, bah-humbuging this joyous time for all of us and trying to take it back to the Roman Saturnalia, where men would give each other gifts, drink and fornicate with each other. Wouldn't those sodomites forcing equal marriage on us love that?

Sarah Palin, truly the voice of our grandparent's generation, bravely sets out to right this wrong. Christmas isn't about sharing the holiday quietly with your family. It's about shoving it down the throats of people who don't believe (or don't believe hard enough), and creating animosity and fear so we get rid of those people stopping us from spreading a holiday about peace and good will to all men.

This is a book necessary for this day and age, not just a cheap cash-in that can be rolled out every holiday until consistency=tradition. I will share this book with my loved years every year, and keep it prominently on my shelf right next to my copy of Ayn Rand's It's a Wonderful Life, where Mr. Potter is praised for his cleverness, and Clarence lets George kill himself for creating a culture of dependency.
