need background in chemistry/biochem

This text is being used for a nutrition class at the Art Institute, against the advice of the instructor (who has been a nutritionist for a couple of decades).

The text is probably fine for those who have a couple of classes in chemistry and biochemistry under their belt and are looking for a rigorous scientific approach to nutrition. For the rest of us, though, it is a very, very difficult read. (I think I understood two sentences in all of chapter 5 on carbohydrates.)

If you don't have the biochem background, make a beeline instead for Nutrition for Foodservice and Culinary Professionals.

No other biography comes closer to the subject

As a devoted reader of history, especially of the early 20th century period, I probably have gone through every popular and even arcane book on Hitler and National Socialism. I've read Albert Speer's "Inside the Third Reich," Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reach," Alan Bullock's "Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives," . . . yet, these books, while informative, lack the depth of understanding of the horrible phenomenon of Hitler that Joachim Fest brings to his biography. Maybe because Fest himself is German and is therefore closer to his subject. Yes, the style is dry, and the book is indeed rather biased at times--the preface is titled incredibly "Hitler and Historical Greatness!" Yet, within that preface, you will find insights and observations that are lacking in all other biographies on the Fuehrer. I myself was riveted from page one all the way to the end. So, if you want to really understand Hitler, read this book. If you want to read a lighter biography, read the sections on Hitler in Bullock's "Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives."

As much a biography of Germany as of Hitler

I'm a big fan of biographies, and this remains (some 10 years after reading it) one of my favorites. There is no dearth of books on Hitler, of course. Fest's accomplishment here is that each section on Hitler is straddled by a section describing other events in the world and Germany, always giving the reader a larger context in which Hitler's activities can be placed.
I'm a little dismayed by [people] who suggest that Hitler was merely a sufferer of post-traumatic-stress syndrome after his experience in the trenches of WWI, and that Fest does a disservice (to Hitler?) by leaving this information out. But many people have suffered in the trenches in many wars without later moving on to attempt world domination and genocide.
In any case, Fest's biography omits nothing. It is written in a clear, beautiful language, and will leave you with an entirely new understanding of Hitler, Germans and Germany.

Joachim Fest's book "Hitler" is a rare pleasure to read. His words create an atmosphere and a world that we can understand. Fest manages to step into the shoes of Hitler -- we sit and day-dream with that man and build castles in the air. More than that, he manages to bare Hitler's mind and soul to the reader. We learn how and why Hitler acted as he did. His actions that are so vile that we absolutely condemn them, suddenly become clearer. We begin to understand and are warned of the power that one single man can usurp, even though he is penniles, without education and friends. Fest does in no way justify Hitler or his tyranny. On the contrary, he does open our eyes so that we see how actions of such brutality are possible. He makes us understand that they can happen again, but also how they can be avoided. It is an in-depth study of a strongman--strongmen by the way come in all sizes; we encounter them in our daily lives. Since Hitler's demise, half a dozen countries have suffered strongmen as heads of state, and it is vital that we understand and recognize a tyrant before it is too late. None better to learn from than Fest's Hitler, one of the shrewdest and most ruthless strongman of them all.

In The Oracle and the Curse, Smith traces the remarkable changes in literary and judicial discourses that addressed (or conjured) a variety of public spheres and forms of authority during the period between the American Revolution and the Civil War. As the secularization of law took hold, judges spoke as oracles of a transcendent rationality and social order, thus commanding obedience. In court testimonies, pamphlets, poems, and novels, however, voices of resistance responded with justifications derived from higher laws. Figures such as John Brown cursed the tribunals of the state and its oracles. Reformers who saw the danger in their fanaticism and tried to regulate such speech, however, did not always welcome their enthusiasm. Meanwhile, a doctrine of separate public versus private spheres led women writers such as Harriet Beecher Stowe to enunciate an alternative discourse of intimate influence whose purported limitation to the private sphere was a mask enabling very public acts of social and political critique. Smith shows how much is at stake in these controversies. He does so through fascinating and wide-ranging examples drawn from legal cases and popular literature, crafting a thoroughly researched, persuasive study that is original and important. (G. Ek het lank gesoek na 'n boek wat my meer inligting kon gee oor bipolariteit - nie net die simptome nie, maar wel die funksionele saamleef daarmee. Die vorige boeke wat ek gelees het was verdoemend. Alhoewel Elsabe die verdoemende siekte beskryf het soos dit is, het sy my die hoop gegee dat die beter verstaan van die siekte wat mens beter beheer oor die uitkoms gee, tog wel bestaan. Ook oor hoe belangrik die ondersteuningsstruktuur van die persoon met bipolariteit is. Haar boek het my hoop gegee. Ek is oneindig jammer vir haar dat dit op haar pad gekom het om hierdeur te gaan en ook baie trots op haar vir haar innerlike sterkte om elke keer bo dit uit te styg.

After reading it, I want to know more about this illness. I think this is a book about embracing this 'monster' in oneself, also about the victory after accepting.

A Great Read and Resource

This book is an easy read and has many practical applications. It uses a great deal of scripture to establish a Biblical precedent for supernatural phenomena. The chapters are fairly short, and most of them end with an "Activation" activity that allows the reader to stop and apply what has been learned. I highly recommend this book for all who desire to develop ears that hear, eyes that see, and a heart that understands!

Great Book!

This is a great book! It is not mystical or spooky. It is a practical discussion of what is missing from modern day Christianity. We read great stories of faith, healing and prophecy in the bible only to find these missing from today's modern day churches. Did we become Christ followers to have a Sunday routine or to see and experience the real power of God's Love? This book will give you some things to think about. Perhaps our scientific approach to life does not fit the approach we need to use when seeking God. Read the book...

Putting it into Practise

I bought this as a gift for my wife and she said that she liked it. It brought confirmation about somethings she had already experienced, added new information and the activations at the end of each chapter were practical, and helpful. It didn't hurt that it was an easy to read book either.
